A young adult from the famous polygamous family TV show "Sister Wives" wants to get baptized into the Mormon church, but she says the church will not allow it.

On the Oct. 11 episode of the popular TLC reality show, "Sister Wives," 19-year-old Madison Brown, daughter of Kody Brown and second-wife Janelle Brown, said a local leader in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints told her she would not be allowed to become a member.

She took to Twitter to call the decision "one of the most devastating things I have been through."

In the episode, the newly engaged Madison said she does not want to practice polygamy, which was forsaken by the LDS Church more than 100 years ago. But, she noted, because she won't disassociate herself from her very public family, she won't be allowed to be a part of the church either.

The tweets and more are at the link.

Maddie would have had to disown her family to join the church and she wasn't about to do that.

I think Madison has always been against polygamy hasn't she? I can't remember. I do remember the kids sitting around eating lunch outside somewhere and one of the girls talking about it and saying it wasn't for them. But maybe she said it was for them. I thought it was Janelle's daughter.

I think it's terrible the Mormon church would ask her to forsake her family. That's terrible. She has already said she doesn't believe in polygamy. That should be enough. What about other converts? Would a christian or a jew have to give up their families I wonder? Or does the stigma of polygamy worry them too much? You would think they would hail her as a convert from the evils of peter pan and his band of wives.

You should see the debate about this on Facebook. Actually, same old debate, but...

I honestly don't know if they did this for the show (story line) or if she was for real. I think either is possible. That said, the Facebook debate is partially whether or not this reporting is accurate, and also the wording, quibbling about whether it's "renounce your family" or "renounce polygamy."

Meanwhile, the Church social media pros are commenting, people who have left the church are, polygamists and former polygamists are also commenting, the comments are more interesting and disturbing than the story. Top one here: https://www.facebook.com/search/str/'sister%20wives'%20daughter%20says%20lds%20church%20won't%20let%20her%20get%20baptized/keywords_top
If the link doesn't work, just search "'sister wives' daughter says lds church won't let her get baptized" on Facebook.

One interesting debate (if you can ignore the "haters gonna hate" idiocy) is about WHICH church is the offshoot, LDS or FLDS. A good point was made that the FLDS churches are the ones who actually follow Joseph Smith's teachings and writings, and that all of the changes made to turn the church into LDS were political in nature, including allowing people of color to hold the priesthood (1970 about) and renouncing polygamy (when US soldiers were ready to attack Deseret, and the church opted for statehood rather than war, so needed a "revelation" to obey US law by renouncing polygamy.) The logic says that the LDS church is actually the "off shoot" and the FLDS the true and original church. You can imagine the hysterics devout mormons are having over that point.

Lots of strong feelings there. I'd love to know the entire story, but my best guess is this:

She may or may not have been sincere about the wish to join the Church, it does make a hell of a storyline and is getting press, which obviously the producers and "cast" want. I've never heard of the Church refusing to baptize before, and they certainly aren't about renouncing family. I mean, I have strong negative feelings about them, but even I don't believe that part. My assumption is that the Church
1. Doesn't want to be used by a reality TV show for a story.
2. Absolutely doesn't want any more press about their polygamous past.
3. In spite of the above, this was a pretty drastic step that may have backfired. I'm sure they were able to find legitimate "reasons" in their doctrine and guidelines, even though they have probably rarely, if ever, been used.

In the comments it mentions that the other polygamy show (sorry, don't know the name but you guys probably will) a son not only was baptized, but is now on a mission for the Church, which means he holds the priesthood.

You guys actually watch, do you think she was sincere in this desire to join the LDS church, or was this just a ruse to garner publicity?
