Married men still hit on divorcees and single women that hasn't changed at all. Well now women do it too more out in the open. |

I thought we started to talk about it or even had a thread for it, but most were unspoiled, hadn't read the books, and I have...so it's pretty tricky to add posts about it. Happy to read them though. |

Do you mean Cersei? She is the most changed from the book, and I felt the book character was far more interesting. Lena Headly is one of the few members of the cast who hasn't read the books...and it's too bad. Funny though that you like her best and I can't stand the actress most of the time in this role. She had a couple of good moments, great even, but mostly she just stands there and snears. Book Cersei had more oomph and spirit and passion and anger, carefully covered, but not covered well. No Calisi aka Daenerys Targaryen. Calisi is her warrior name. The mother of dragons. That's who I'm talking about. I had to google it to figure out the spelling. I loved Calisi/Drago storyline. When he died I might have shed a tear. I found him very sexy. LOL Ceresi is the mother Lannister - never took a liking to her b/c of the incest angle. |

That's the other thing, the incest thing is so key in the book, and handled so much better. Yeah, I love Dany! She is SUCH a perfect choice for that role...just wonderful. ETA, I cried in the book AND on the show..,so we share that! Edited by Mariah, Dec 23 2012, 10:17 PM.

lol Mariah - I am very tempted to read the books. I feel like the TV show introduced so many plot lines and characters that went nowhere. Now the last 10 minutes of the season finale with the dead people army..now that was cool - but that was a storyline from what, the first season when they had the weird stuff going on in the frozen woods beyond the wall. S2 just confused the shit outta me. And talk about interesting characters, the female soldier (she was blonde and manly in the show - kinda reminded me of Tilda Swinton) I wanted to know more about her. Sigh. |

I have to be SO careful here. I think I can say a few things without being at all spoilerish. Never assume a character who seems minor will stay minor. I finally gave up while reading and had to go to the Westeros Wiki website just to remind me who the hell someone WAS...I still can't keep them all straight. The show is REALLY cutting down the cast of characters, and they are doing it well. They pretty much HAVE to do that, because at least with a book and a website handy you can go back and remind yourself who the hell they are talking about or who is suddenly center stage as a player. They are also changing a few, and combining a few stories. For example, in the books let us say we have a character named Jezebel.. Well, if some actress is playing Jezebel, you better damn well keep her on screen and being paid, or she will go off and do a movie, and perhaps be unavailable when you need her later. In the books however, Jezebel may disappear for a few thousand pages, but in a subsequent book suddenly show back up and become major. So, the TV producers are actually leaving out a lot of "minor" players because they can't keep an actor on retainer for the time when they may become a co-star, so they leave them out altogether until and if the story demands they be there. We are actually getting some hints as book readers, since some "red-herrings" stories are being dropped by the show. AND THEN you have the whole history stuff, which sometimes takes up several chapters in the books, to the point that your eyes may glaze over or you might throw the book across the room when yet ANOTHER character comes into play--and even though it's history, it defines or portends a possible future. I don't know what to tell you about reading the books. They are great. They are horrible and self-indulgent. They are complex. They are annoying. Most importantly though, they are not finished and if the fat fuck has a heart attack or something, they may never BE finished. Which would seriously suck. I'd say to read them, but wait until after this coming season airs. Oh, and bookmark Westeros.org wiki to keep yourself from going nuts trying to remember who someone was in book one when they suddenly become relevant in book 4. |

They drove me insane and still do at times. However, with a decent editor, they would have been GREAT. Still, the genius and detail and all the rest, the fascinating characters and the sheer depth of them is unique and stunning. I'm glad I read them, will probably by the new one as soon as it comes out too (perhaps in 2020?) ;) I just hope he eventually FINISHES the damn story. |

I've read the first three books. They are amazing. AMAZING. Sucked you in like no other. The first book, when Aria is escaping from the guards (I think this is safe b/c you've seen it, Shopper), is some of the best reading I've ever read. They juxtapose her escape with Syrio's teaching and it's just so good. And I loved the dream when Ned meets up with Targaryean's (sp) King's Guard. With that said, I've stalled at a Feast of Crows and haven't even touched A Dance with Dragons. It's just so tedious. I need to give it another crack. I thought the tv show as okay. Only saw the first season, an they kept a lot of the book. A lot of the dialogue has been lifted from the book. But you will not be disappointed - at least not by the first 3 - if you choose to read the books. And this is coming from a person who never reads fantasy books at all. And I agree with you about over-detail, Mariah. It's too much sometimes. I can't keep characters straight. It's just so unwieldy. Did not watch Tiny tonight, but i did see the preview. I may have to check that one out... Edited by oleander, Dec 24 2012, 12:12 AM.

The first and third books are by far the best I think. That's why I say to wait until after this season to start reading, I think visually the 3rd book will be stunning on screen, which is why it will take two seasons to cover. Not much wasted space in that one! Oleander I know what you mean. I am more critical of his books than most people, many, MANY people adore them. The stuff I wrote was just my opinion. I'm not much into fantasy reading either. Although I seriously LOVED The Mists of Avalon, and recommend that one. King Arthur tales from the feminine side of things, juxtaposing the old and new religions. I thought it was lovely and a page turner and scary and all kinds of good things pretty concisely done. |

So in love with Mad Men, I'm almost through Season 4 now...the season 5 DVDs are still pretty pricey. Such a good show and you were right, I'm totally involved with their stories now. All of them. BTW these DVDs are really packed with extras, lots of commentaries and other goodies. Seriously good buys at $12 or so, too bad season 5 is still up around $34. Great Christmas presents for me this year, probably my favorite gifts. No wonder this show gets so many awards! When does season 6 begin, anyone know? |

I'm not sure Mariah. I think it varies. I finally got the full West Wing set this year - I'd been wanting it since the series went off the air, but then it was really expensive - like $300. I bought it for myself from Mr. C for around a $100 on ebay. He was like, "Remember when you used to READ?" Lol. I reminded him we went years and years without watching much TV at all so it all balances out. Edited by Cosmocrush, Dec 26 2012, 11:42 PM.
