What? No Homeland? Other than that I'd agree with the list.

Speaking of which - they were shut out of the Golden Globes this year. But at least the only good sitcom on TV in my opinion: Park and Recreation FINALLY was nominated for something. About time.

I think Homeland kind of blew it last year, and this a bit. Still, the idea that Clare Danes didn't get nominated when Kerry Washington DID is a head scratcher. I love Kerry, but her "acting" on Scandal is so OTT and yes, I realize a lot of that is the writing, but still.

Actually, Kerry did have some lovely moments when she wasn't gif-worthy chewing the scenery, and Danes is being given the same old shit to do.

I don't watch Scandal (no real reason, just never got started on it and don't want to get in during the middle) but isn't it a soap opera by the same person that did Greys Anatomy and Private Practice soap operas?

I think Clare Danes is an amazing actress despite any flaws with the story last year (and this year too, actually) That first season was really hard to top.

Scandal is totally OTT, and downright silly as far as anything approaching "real" but it's a wild ride, and rarely boring. There are a couple of really good actors, a bunch of overly-emo actors (like Kerry) and yes, it's by Shonda, a woman I personally can't stand.

Actually, it's Shonda's squeeing blogs I can't stand, but I give the woman full credit for coming up with compelling characters and actors, I just wish someone else would take over after she gets the really great ideas. It's totally soap, and many of the storylines of her shows come directly from old OLTL or GH storylines, the whole pregnancy crap, the one who doesn't want a child has two abortions even though she's a doctor and presumably acquainted with birth control (on Greys) and grown ups acting like teenagers, and "back from the dead" characters, etc. I also love that she has integrated TV shows quite well. I kind of wish she would just create the characters, cast the roles, and turn it over to someone who is great at story.

That said, Scandal started out as serious, quickly and accidentally (?) fell into camp. As "camp" it's really quite fun. The President of the United States spends all of his time trying to fuck his mistress. His Chief of Staff is gay and married to a man who fucked the Vice President's husband, and she just killed him and called the CoS for help. (Ha!) The villain, the First Lady, is actually a wonderful actress and now getting a lot of support in spite of the writing, maybe a bit because of it?

Anyway, it IS a wild ride. I started watching in the beginning, gave up around episode 5, came back in and got caught up by reading when things started popping right and left and stories got so absurd they were quite fun, and riveting if you don't allow yourself to think too much. I'm liking it much more now, it's popcorn, but covered with caramel, tasty peanuts, and once in a while you find a prize too.

Thanks for the rundown Mariah. It sounds like fun, something I would probably enjoy. I wish I had watched from the beginning. Maybe I'll Netflix the first season.

As for Kerry Washington, I haven't seen a lot of her stuff but it seems weird for her to get a GG nom for a soap when Clare Danes didn't for a big complicated dramatic role. Just my opinion.

Oh god Kerry is beautiful but the part she plays is OTT - I agree. Certainly doesn't show her acting chops. I can get on there and chug big bottles of wine. If anyone should get nominated from that show it's J Morton. He's great although he has a chance to be great since his role is juicy. Still he does that ridiculous fast talking they all do on the show. They actually slowed it down a bit from the first season. I am really not a Shondra (sp) fan. I never liked Gray's Anatomy either. OH chief of staff guy is an awesome actor too. He was always in little parts and this really elevated his status for once. I now remember the show he was on with Don Johnson. It was Nash Bridges.

Even a bad Homeland is better than 90% of TV. I'm really enjoying the season of Saul. I'm not surprised they didn't nominate Claire again. She's won like 2 emmy's for it already. Sad John Hamm didn't get a nomination. He was awesome this season even if you didn't love the season. I always enjoy it though.

TV Guide: The Best TV Shows of 2013

11. Scandal (ABC)

Metascore: 64
Scandal is downright absurd sometimes — actually all the time. The president kills a Supreme Court justice? Olivia's dad is the head of a black-ops division that tortures and kills people? Her mother is a freakin' terrorist?! It's one twist after another, and one bombastic speech after another — always delivered at a breakneck pace, defying all the slow-plotting rules of the Golden Age of TV. Shonda Rhimes' brainchild may not be grounded in realism, but it's what a pulsating political thrill ride should be.

oleander, I saw it. Seemed like a good place to end the series to me. In fact, I thought it was a series finale. Has Homeland been renewed?

Brody had to die. I didn't check if it was the end or not for good.

I think it's coming back because I read an article where Jessica and Dana aren't going to be in it anymore, save for guest starring every now and then. I agree with you guys - he had to die and it did seem like a series finale. I just don't see where they can go from here. I do think the show lost a bit of its focus when they started to emphasize the Carrie/Brody relationship - that wasn't what made the show so good the first season.
