Note: I really like series cravings, but once in a while an episode won't play, and asks you to download something. DON'T. I've watched dozens of episodes of various shows on that site, and only once has it asked me to do that. Just skip that episode if it happens. It may be safe, but I don't do that, and google wasn't encouraging about the download. weird that it's only happened once in all this time, but... |

I thought it started with a lot of filler and catchup. I guess that was necessary to start the themes for the season. Was starting not to like it, but then it built some steam. I love Edith in London, that dress! Fabulous. I wish they'd cast the publisher better, he seems creepy. Are we supposed to remember who Edna is, the one who is coming as Cora's lady's maid? This seemed very implausible to me, but its a soap after all. Funny the baby is named George. I'll miss O'Brien, but that soap incident always cast a pall. Mrs. Patmore and the electric beater were funny. Daisy looked great (wasn't she supposed to go run the farm for her dead husband's father?), Matthew's mother was wonderful, and Maggie Smith was her usual self, I loved her clothes and jewelry. Bates and Anna? Don't they have a house of their own? I thought the Carson friend plot was very heavy handed, but as mentioned , there was a lot of setup. I see Hugh Bonneville is going to be his usual dundering self. The actor looks a lot better and younger, I thought. I think Mary can shine this season. A promising start, but I was not blown away. I love the clothes, the atmosphere, most of the actors, but sometimes the clunky plots get to me. Please don't make Thomas be a horrible villain again. Edited by weaver, Sep 29 2013, 11:19 AM.

It moved a little slow for me but maybe it was because of the catch up they had to do. Edna, Cora's new lady's maid is the maid or whatever she was who worked there before and was flirting with and kissed whatshisname, the former chauffeur. I thought Thomas was just being his usual ass self with the nanny but I guess he actually knew she wasn't treating the little girl well. |

I think Thomas was totally being an ass and it accidentally turned out well. Glad Mom caught that bitch nanny mistreating the little girl! I felt like we are back to fighting the same battle the dead husband already fought though. Daddy is stuck in his old ways and Downton is in jeopardy again. |

OH, is that who Edna was? So we'll see when Hugh B sees her. I think Thomas episode with the nanny was accidental. She looked down on him, and that was enough for him to start up his nonsense. I hope we don't have to see more of this. Hope to watch episode two today. |

I started episode two and just could not get into it. It is so slow paced and contrived. If Edna was the housemaid that Lord G almost had a fling with, why hasn't there been a scene where he has noticed her? At least not to the point I've watched. I gather she and Thomas will engage in some shenanigans. Hasn't that been done to death? Anyway, maybe I'll try to finish it later. Edited to say I see Edna was the one who came on to Tom, not Lord G. I'd forgotten all about that plot. Edited by weaver, Sep 30 2013, 08:03 AM.

Again, I loved it. (episode 2) But most people in the UK agree with you and think it sucked :) I think I love the show so much I'd watch them all just sit there. I DID chuckle a little at Matthew's letter :) |

I was feeling so much sympathy for the nanny though. I bet the new nanny they hire is attractive and self possessed. I can't remember the name of the book (books?) I read long ago. I remember that the nanny was always in a weird position in manor house hierarchy though, probably for centuries. Does anyone remember a book that somehow talked about that quite a bit? Grrr, maybe with more coffee! Anyway, the nanny was not quite family, yet not staff either, so nannies had no one to really hang out with except the kids. They would sometimes eat with the family, with the staff serving them, yet never ate with the staff. Or maybe they ate alone when not invited to eat with the family? This is driving me crazy not being able to remember the book clearly. It was a sort of "no man's land" position to hold. Rejected by the staff because she was above them so couldn't be "friends" with them, and the tension of the family always knowing she was not quite our kind dear as well. |

I forced myself to finish it and thought it was dreadful. There is a way to tell us about workhouses without introducing this convoluted backstory about Carson and the love of his life. It was nice to find that out too, but there are more subtle ways to do it. I think Fellowes has gotten very lazy in his writing, if he himself is involved at all at this point. Bates is getting on my very last nerve. And Cora believing that Anna screwed something up and didn't tell her, no, it wouldn't happen. I hope there is more of London, it looks interesting. And Edith has always been such an interesting character. |

Episode three was much better. They had a weekend party at the house. The dresses, jewelry, the house itself, I could watch just for that. And a couple of the subplots seem to be moving along nicely. There is one plot that disturbed me, I know it is real life, but I don't want to see it in DA. And now it will drag on for a while. Isobel is such a brilliant actress, her speech at the table was so moving. Most of the others are really top notch too, it does make it worth watching. |

I'm getting a bit frustrated with this show. It feels like all of the old stories are back, and as frustrating as ever. Lord whatever is annoying me. Modernization was already dealt with, and now, since Mathew died, we are back in the same old rut. At least Lord was forced by grannie into reading the letter to Mary. Thank heavens for the brother in law and mother in law, but do I really want to watch Mary butt heads with daddy endlessly? Nah. I'm not interested in the dismissed housemaid story, it's obviously going to be another re-tread of stuff we've already seen, only taken further. I dunno, maybe I need a little less soap and a little more occasional joy or progress. I've only just started the 2nd episode, so hopefully it improves, but I kind of feel like it's trying to walk through a sludgy bog. I know that after the war many jobs in "big houses" were lost, and they are using Mosely for part of this, but there were also new doors opening up. I know that women, during the war, took on traditional male roles, and much like during the aftermath of WWII here, the soldiers came back and the women were expected to return to the home and content themselves with raising kids and making dinner, but do I want to watch it? Maybe it's because everything is so grim in real life right now, but I need a bit of sugar with my sour events...I hope this show can find a balance that isn't just frustrating. ETA Yay! Episode 3 was better, even though I want to throttle the Lord and his head butler. Maybe I spoke too soon, Anna's rape and the card shark gambling stuff? So Anna will be pregnant, and the Lord will lose even more money? arrgh Edited by Mariah, Oct 10 2013, 07:04 PM.

They should just make the whole show about Granny. I could watch Maggie Smith all day long. |
