I was very disappointed with this episode. Love the characters, the costumes, the locations, but the writing is dreadful. Every cliché in the book is dragged out.

New male character has possibilities, I think.

I'm probably going to let it go until its all over, and watch the remaining ones at one clip.

I am STILL waiting for my computer back from the Dell depot, and I'm on the wii u, but the other night I tried to catch up on season 4 on Jake's PC, and something called VGrabber gave us horrible malware! Luckily my bf runs a computer store, and she fixed it remotely, but it was a BIG mess. I won't try again until I have my Dell back, because screwing up Jake's computer permanently would be BAD. I'm sure you're all more computer savvy than me, but be careful out there!

Agree, I am getting more and more leery of download sites. I had major hardware problems last week on my PC and invested more money again into this clonker. So given I wasn't too enthralled with the season to begin with, I may wait to see the rest on Ch 13. I've seen four epis.

I finally watched all! (Got my Dell back)- but still didn't want to download, because lots of my Downton friends are getting malware. I googled "Downton Abbey Season 4" and about midway down the first page is a site called agoldenafternoon.com with the title "how to watch downton abbey season 4" and the episodes are all there- immediately watchable. I did a marathon of the episodes 3-8 I had missed (the "special" won't be out until xmas day in the UK). What can I say? I LOVE it. It's just so comfy to me; like food from the crock-pot. It is a SOAP; and the last episode is sort of contrived, and then not much happens- but I still had a blast and the site was great. One weird thing, as the credits opened I could hear but not see the picture. As soon as I clicked on the "rotate" icon, I could see fine; and then had to continue rotating the picture until it was right side up, and then I watched them all full screen, and no problems.

So, this is the spoiler thread. I quit watching after the rape, partly because I was getting annoyed, and decided to wait until it aired here, but I'd rather know!

Anyone want to help out and give me the major changes?

About the rape?
Did daddy finally lighten the hell up?
I heard homely sister is preggers.
The sexy maid hook up with one of the rich men yet?

(etc) ;)

Whatcha want to know about the rape?

I think Daddy has realized that Mary is going to do whatever Mary wants to do so he doesn't argue about it as much now.

Homely sister is preggers. She went to a place to get an abortion but changed her mind at the last minute. Aunt Rosamund and Granny Violet both know and are pushing a plan for homely sister to go on a trip to Switzerland with Aunt Rosamund, where the baby will be born and given up for adoption. I guess we'll find out at the Christmas special if that actually happens.

Who is the sexy maid? The one Tom the chauffeur kissed? Well, she tried, she got Tom drunk and slept with him. Her plan then seemed to be if she thought he'd marry her if he'd gotten her pregnant that she would get herself pregnant quick but Mrs. Hughes nipped that in the bud and now she's been booted out of the Abbey again.

Thanks!

Did her husband or anyone else ever find out about the rape? What happened to the guy? I assume she's not pregnant or I would have heard about it. ??

I have to admit, I HATED that story, although I realize maids were routinely raped on the big estates. We just got over all the damn jail drama, and now this? Yes, I know it's a soap...but ugh. I like her and she acted it really well, broke my heart, but then just annoyed me with "keeping it a secret" although that was a common thing to do, still is really.

The father was wearing my last nerve when I stopped watching. It felt like a complete retread of every other season. I liked him better thinking about cheating, and realizing he was old fashioned and needed to change or go under.

Yes- Bates found out about the rape. He got all menacing to Mrs Hughes- lol- he threatened to leave Anna for good if Mrs Hughes didn't spill WTF was wrong with Anna. (Anna had moved out of "bates cottage" and back into downton, after they got rid of "sexy maid" as you called her. Sexy maid was actually Lady Grantham's ladies' maid; and she was trying to snag Branson- so Mrs Hughes (who Branson told about his hook-up, because he felt guilty) gave her the boot. So until Lady Grantham got a new ladies' maid, Baxter, Anna was helping Lady Grantham as well as Lady Mary- and she used that as an excuse to Bates for moving out of their home. But he could tell Anna was withdrawn and troubled, so he got it out of Mrs Hughes that Anna was attacked, only they did not tell him it was by Mr Green, Lord Gillingham's valet, they said it was by a burgler that wandered in and they didn't know who it was. Bates was sweet to Anna and she moved back home; but she was still a wreck- and it wasn't helped that Mr Green kept popping back to Downton because Lord Gillingham wants Lady Mary. Evelyn Napier wants Lady Mary, too- and also (my favorite) this hot Guy who Lady Mary sort of wrestled in pig slop with wants her, too :) In the last episode, Mary told Lord Gillingham he had to fire Mr Green but wouldn't tell him why; just that he'd done something horrible and fire his valet for her, and he did. The next day- Mr Green was pushed or fell in front of a "lorry" in Rippon. Mr Bates had conveniently gone to Rippon for the day- and wouldn't tell anyone what he did there! Mary and maybe Anna suspect Bates of offing Mr green; but Mary thinks if he did he was justified. Mary was told by Lord Gillingham that there was a large crowd where Mr green died, and no one there SAW any foul play.

Does any of this make sense? LOL

I just LOVE Hugh Bonneville (Lord Grantham)- from other things- but he had NOTHING to do this year. He was barely in the last 2 episodes; he'd gone to America to bail out Cora's brother from some financial scandal (though taking Thommas as his valet instead of Bates, at Bates request). Lord Grantham DOES need to get back to cheating. Elizabeth Mcgovern's story line was no better. Its sad because they're both so good; they need some conflict. I watched the last episode again and liked it better. The Xmas special could be really good. I hope :)

Anna is NOT pregnant. Edith is pregnant by Michael Gregson; who is missing in Germany where he'd gone to get a divorce after establishing residency, so that he can marry Edith. He doesn't know she's pregnant. The latest scheme is, Lady Rosamund and Lady Edith will go to Switzerland until the Baby is born, and have it adopted there. Edith was going to have an abortion but couldn't go through with it. Lady Rosamund and the Dowager Countess are the only ones who know about Edith's pregnancy.

eta: didn't mean to repeat what Willy had already told you- and probably completely confused you. I'm sort of obsessed :)

Willy, I just watched it on SeriesCravings.com but it cut off right when Bates asked for a penny ice, any chance you can tell me what happened next? It was right at the end while they were walking on the beach.

I haven't watched yet. I forgot they always do a Christmas special and just happened across something about it earlier today. I'll watch tonight and let you know tomorrow.

I've only watched it once- so I forget/don't remember the "penny ice" part- was that at the beach? I hope to watch again today, and will look for it. I loved it- of course- I'm just obsessed and so mine is not an objective critique. I was so surprised at how good I thought Paul Giamatti was.

It cut to Carson and Mrs. Hughes at the water's edge. Carson had his pants rolled up and she was holding up the bottom of her skirt so they could walk barefoot into the water a little bit. Carson was all worried about his pants getting wet and falling down and asked Mrs. Hughes if she'd hold his hand to keep him steady. She said she would and he said something about it maybe not looking proper. She said at their stage of life maybe they didn't need to worry about appearing totally proper all of the time. It ended with the two of them standing in the water holding hands.

Thanks Willy!

I haven't seen all the episodes, I was annoyed with the early ones and just decided to wait until it aired here.

So Lady Edith is going to go get her child, and the early "brown shirts" are harassing her baby daddy? I should just go watch them all.
