UWS has always been popular with theater folk. It was the place for rich, creative people to live in those days. Soho didn't exist as a residential community. John Lennon was in the Dakota, Streisand lived on CPW (so did Madonna when she first made big bucks), Mia Farrow, so many huge theater people. Nora Ephron even did a book (or short story) about how she loved her building, old time West Side building, the Apthorp I think. I think they forced her out, she was a stabilized tenant for a long time. Mia Farrow as well was forced out of a rent stabilized place she had "inherited" from her mother, Maureen O'Sullivan. Harrison Ford and his long time wife lived on CPW. Lots of times actors were not accepted by the strict boards of the old East side buildings, but also they wanted to live on the West side, it had a more laid back creative vibe. Seinfeld still lives on CPW. Aretha never lived in NYC. She stayed in Detroit most of her life as far as I know. She had a big fear of flying and drove to most gigs. And I don't think Diana Ross did either. After Detroit, she lived in LA where she had her kids. I know she had a penthouse apartment in the Sherry Netherland here, but sold it a few years ago. |

Argh, all I can remember (this was told to me 20 years ago) was black, female, superstar singer. Maybe Gladys Knight .... no, I'm pretty sure they said Aretha. I'll have to ask some of my friends from that time if they heard that story, too. |

I remember when Madonna got rejected from the board of that ultra primo building on the UES - they wanted no showbiz there at all. I forget the name/number of the bldg |

Yeah, poor Madonna. I think she finally sold her CPW apartment and moved into her triple wide mansion on the UES. And Alec Baldwin recently sold his CPW apartment that he'd owned forever to move to a trendy neighborhood with new wife and soon to be kid. Yoko is still in the Dakota though. |

Ronnie Spector is the only one I can think of, and she wasn't really a superstar. |

Madonna was also turned down from the San Remo on CPW and the Dakota. 740 Park Ave turned down a slew of celebrities and media stars - even Barbara Walters, Streisand and Elizabeth Taylor. They want no paps ever. It was built by Jackie O's grandfather I think and she pretty much grew up there. Funny though - they accepted a lot of financial mogols who would go on to be indicted. |

I'm still feeling it was Aretha. She was in NYC at various times, to record, etc. So she may have lived in that neighborhood temporarily. I need to find out how old her kids are. She'd have to have been having babies in the early '60s for it to be her. Huh, found this:

How could she have been 14 in 1956 and 24 in 1957? I know she had kids very young, it was kept very secret. In fact she has been very secretive about her personal life in general. |

Yes, Lincoln Towers. I think it was the first high rise building I ever entered. Here is a good article about them. They were rentals, like most buildings in NY, until 1987, when they went co-op. WHEW, what a good deal those tenants must have gotten. http://www.lincolntowers.com/info/history.php Edited by weaver, May 10 2013, 10:16 AM.

Me too Weaver but for my grandma's apt which I don't think was very high and in Brooklyn. I was 12 and they were my first city friends. Later on they would take me to Xenon's - my first club when I was 16. |

Ted giving up his seat while dumbo Pete took a woman's. <3! Don getting dumped after trying to exert control. <3 Bert Peterson being fired AGAIN by Roger! <3 Peggy telling Don off! <3 <3 <3 Joan being happy to see Peggy. <3 Ted terrifying Don in the plane! <3 I am wondering where Dawn is. Oh, and it looks like Peggy bought an entire building, maybe that's why they can't kick the people our of their apartments. Isn't that what she said? It was all very strange, including the ending, but there were some perfect moments tonight. Edited by Mariah, May 13 2013, 12:25 AM.

When I noticed that John Slattery was directing, I said "oh no" to myself. I've never liked his episodes, and I thought this one was heavy and clunky, especially the Don/Sylvia scenes. I wasn't sure if Don intentionally got Sylvia to break off with him once he knew the great doctor had gone off to Minnesota (Mayo Clinic?). He doesn't really like available people. But his expression in his scene in the elevator convinced me otherwise. I saw John Hamm on Katie a few weeks ago and its amazing how much Weiner is aging him. Even though I love the new office stuff, I almost wish it would end this year with Don walking off into an unknown place alone leaving us uncertain as to his future. I think Chaough needs a bit more of an edge, he just seems too nice in comparison to how he was portrayed in previous years. So now Don beats him in drinking, but he beats Don in flying. Lets hope they are even. Glad the RFK thing happened at the end, so it didn't dominate the episode the way the MLK assasination did. Yes, it seems Peggy bought the house. I still don't buy it as a plausible option for someone like her to do in 1968. Somehow I think Peggy won't be with Abe too much longer. Joan and the ass-kisser? Hmmmm, well it saved his job, but is there going to be more there? Poor Pete, he can't win for losing. But he is scum, so he deserves it. And Slattery delivers comic lines like nobody else. Love him. |

I hated the whole Don/Sylvia 50 Shades of Grey thing. Maybe I'm weird but I haven't read those books and don't intend to. That whole dynamic turns me off. I guess it was supposed to be hot but all I kept thinking is "I wish she'd just tell him to eff off and leave." I did love Peggy telling Don off. And Pete has the best tantrums! |

Agree! I really miss Betty. She was the perfect stone-cold bitch at times. I'd like to see more of her, Sally and Henry. Peggy must feel quite demoted - especially after getting Pete's/Harry's old office! At least we barely saw Megan. There was a blind item at CDAN a few weeks ago that told of a 'foreign-born' actress sleeping with a producer of a 'very hit show' in which she was supposed to have a small part at first but because she slept with the producer, her role was expanded and drawn out. Most people guessed it was Jessica Pare and Matt Weiner. |
