Icy - you might share a birth date with my husband! His mom was in the hospital for several days after giving birth - Kennedy was killed Nov 23 - my husband was born the 20th.

I was sent home from the hospital just over one and a half days of giving birth to each of my sons. Times have changed!

I don't know what to plan for his 50th. It is a big milestone, for sure. I was thinking about having a party at home for him with our friends. I don't think I'd make it a surprise - although that could be really fun. I'm not sure.

Sorry to hijack the Mad Men thread again!

I think part of the charm of madmen is that it DOES make us remember how we, or family members felt during those times, because it just captures things. The first time I was completely hooked was that episode when Sally comes down wearing the dry cleaners' bag, and the moms (one pregnant) are drinking and smoking and Betty's only concern is whether or not her clothes are on the floor, and threatens Sally.

SUCH a total capture of childhood back then! Oh and the dumping all the garbage after the picnic in the new caddy.

Yeah, Peggy melted when he said "our children" and she would have probably bought anything he suggested at that point.

This show just inspires memories, so I don't think it's a thread hijack at all. ;)

EXACTLY Mariah! I was watching it with my daughter and she freaked out about the dry cleaning bag and the pregnant women smoking and drinking. I guess I forgot that these kids grew up never seeing a cig commercial on tv. What we took (take) as just commonplace is a shock for them.

FWIW.. Freely... have a Mad Men surprise party for your husband!

Oh, Wednesday, November 20th -- I'm the 24th, that Sunday morning when the nation was watching TV as Jack Ruby murdered Lee Harvey Oswald, history's biggest patsy. I actually saw a documentary that convinced me that LBJ was behind the assassination. Nevertheless, JFK was killed that Friday ... and so I was two days too late to have him as my first president. LBJ was -- the murderer! ;)

Thanksgiving was the following week that year, and I'll bet it was hard to feel thankful.

I remember that scene with the dry cleaning bag vividly. I was shocked ... because I was afraid for Sally, even though it's a TV show, and it was the first time I thought that Betty was NOT a good mother.

I need to look up what it says about "Wednesday's Child" and "Sunday's Child" ... or are those just Mother Goose things?

*ETA: I remember feeling so sad for JFK, Jr. because his birthday was that Monday, Nov. 25th -- I think the last thing Jackie did was have his 3rd birthday party at the White House, before she packed up the family and moved out.

Here it is - it was MG
Monday's child is fair of face,
Tuesday's child is full of grace;
Wednesday's child is full of woe,
Thursday's child has far to go;
Friday's child is loving and giving,
Saturday's child works hard for its living;
But the child that is born on the Sabbath day
Is bonny and blithe, and good and gay.

I always hated that poem, because I'm Wednesday's child and never ever felt I was full of woe, but it worried me that it was a prediction for my life (back when I was little.) Now I realize it's all bullshit because I've really lead a pretty eventful life, with some woe, but far more wonder and joy and fun. Hell, maybe a lot of woe, but I've always been a glass half full type.

Icy, your reaction to the plastic dry cleaner's bag cracks me up! How were you when Sally was driving, or the kids are rolling around the car without seat belts on? Or when they had no idea where Bobby was while they drank their booze at the picnic?

My dad taught me to drive when my feet still wouldn't reach the pedals--the first time I drove for real I was about to start kindergarten. Then again, it was an emergency--my dad had a heart attack and was on the floor of the car, so he worked the pedals and I drove (well, was driving) to my aunt's house for help. My mother wouldn't help, she shouted down to "let the bastard die!" It was just dawn. I got the car out of the long driveway and on to the road when my neighbor saw me driving and ran over and took over.

The reason I drove instead of ran the 2 blocks to my aunt's house was that I was not allowed to cross the street on my own yet. The strange logic of a child, she hadn't told me I couldn't drive the car, and my daddy had been letting me drive while sitting on his lap for a while.

OMG, Mariah, what a story!
I feel the same way, both my kids are Wednesday and so far (fingers crossed) they haven't had a lot of woe and have brought me so much joy.
Mr. Disco and I are both Monday and well, what can I say? : B)

Yeah, my parents were a volatile mess. The night before I'd broken up a huge physical fight between them, and sent my dad down to the car with a blanket to sleep. I also wasn't allowed to go out when it was dark, so at dawn I crept down to check on him--he was having a heart attack. I ran up to my mom, and she said that, and a bunch of other things, ran back down to my dad and he asked me if I could steer the car to my Aunt's house if he worked the pedals.

What a childhood.

Betty's hair freaks me out because my mother still wears her hair like that.
