The probation hearings are almost all on line too. One person got off by snitching (should have never happened him being released) but the rest are still in jail. Horrifying. I just KNOW that one of the two girls will end up with Manson...either that one Betty was chasing or the daughter of the partner. The timing is perfect, Manson is just about ready to move to Spahn Ranch. Anyway, just a head's up for those of you who tape shows. It's going long tonight by about 5 minutes. |

They have been running long often. On the TV schedule, it shows as lasting till 4 minutes after, with the replay starting at 11:05. I can't remember who, but someone was supposed to be living at that place where the killings happened, and he was the intended target. It was Sharon and group's bad luck to be there instead. ETA: It was Doris Day's son, Terry Melcher who I read about. Apparently Manson knew he wasn't there, but wanted to "send a message" to him by having that house trashed and everyone in it killed: http://www.cielodrive.com/manson-murders-motive-melcher.php Edited by IcyAll, Jun 2 2013, 05:40 PM.

I kept expecting Don to meet Manson at that party. I knew they would do the DNC, and that was handled well. This is going to take a 2nd watching, since I'm pretty confused about the other stuff that was happening. |

But you know, Don nearly dying in the pool -- and spread eagle like the figure in the beginning falling? I wonder if that's a plant or if that's to say "no, won't happen" ... I loved that Joan stood up for herself, I love that Peggy helped her. I believe they would cut her from that partner's meeting and it made my blood boil. I don't understand the motivation for making the company name Sterling Cooper & Company ... was that a sop to losing Manischewitz? And then Roger didn't care! I'm so over the pot smoking, the hippies, the Vietnam War talk ... I find it boring. I guess because I know how it all turns out. ;) |

But that was just a huge part of the late sixties and early seventies Icy, just as much as the kids not wearing seatbelts and everyone drinking and driving was in the early sixties when the show began. Big full skirts and aprons are gone, it's the era of the mini skirts now! Read the collider review and finally figured out that this was all about many different "us vs. them" themes all colliding. Men/Women, The two agencies. NY vs LA, Republicans/Democrats. Demonstrators against the war vs cops, and the establishment. Young vs Old. and more that I'm not thinking about now. For Mad Men, it was soooo straightforward that I missed it, got it the 2nd time through though. Oh, and FYI, you know the girl in the pink dress that walks by Roger outside the hotel? I think I owed that dress, or one very like it--wore it to school once. That may have been the dress that caused my school to issue the inches above the knee rule. Ha. Actually I probably had a knock off of that dress and got it from some very inexpensive mall store near my house. Spent some of my paycheck at a hamburger place to get it, probably most of my check. The clothes were SO perfect! They almost never do mini skirts of the 60s right on TV, but they did here. Loved that short guy who was the quintessential Hollywood movie guy too. I hope that guy calls Joan! Interesting article about the miniskirt and the social implications and the connection between liberation of women during this time: http://www.randomhistory.com/2009/05/25_miniskirt.html Edited by Mariah, Jun 3 2013, 02:49 AM.

OH, M, I know that was real. I'm just tired of it. Probably because where I live there are STILL people like that -- pot-smoking hippies against the establishment. Geez, the town one over is FULL of them. So it's not retro for me. ;) |

I think they're setting it up so that Joan and Peggy start up their own all female firm. I think they would cater to female brands initially, like Avon, and then eventually branch out to everything. I'm confused as to why Joan was in so much trouble. Isn't she a partner like the rest of them? Why does she have to answer to Pete or anyone else then? |

Nice recaps. http://www.chicagonow.com/couple-critics/2013/06/mad-men-recap-a-tale-of-two-cities/ This one gave me some insight into Don's story this season. http://collider.com/mad-men-season-6-episode-10-recap/ Us vs Them. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/maureen-ryan/mad-men-recap-tale-two-cities_b_3379865.html The always interesting Maureen. Terrible episode in my opinion, directed by Slattery. Weiner is trying to squeeze in every single bit of the counterculture in one episode as he can. And he fails at it. All of his hippies and far left liberals are caricatures in my opinion. Including Abe, and the guy in the office who wouldn't go to the meeting. Peggy couldn't call the meeting because she isn't an account person. Pete is THE account man, and should have been there as far as the procedures of the company go. I think Weiner is believing too much of his own publicity. The clothes in this episode were great, and right on target. I enjoyed The Killing so much more. Edited by weaver, Jun 4 2013, 02:50 PM.

I thought it wasn't as deep as most, and the whole "us vs them" theme was hammered home a bit too much, but they used everyone, and some progress was made on many stories, so I did like it. I thought they captured the divisions (all kinds) in this episode very well. I think Abe has mental issues, he flipped out about voices from outer space once before I think, or did something really weird. That may be a set up for a future story. A guy who functions but is really on the edge of sanity/genius could flip out. A while ago in this thread I was describing what 1968 felt like to me, all disjointed, groups who were beginning to just hate each other, discord everywhere, the end of the peace and love dream and the beginning of inter-family and societal wars, the whole women's rights and lib thing finally jelling from "maybe" to "why the hell not?" The mood I was trying to describe was so perfectly captured in this episode. The young began to take over, especially in advertising, everything was geared toward selling to US--and that revolution in ads will impact the show. Avon was the first little crack, so it was smart to include that. "Old fashioned." New York stopped being the only powerhouse, and California began to take the stage as well. I really love the more complicated episodes most, but everything I was trying to describe a few weeks ago or whenever it was, was visually captured in A Tale of Two Cities. |

I just talked to my friend. The apartment was between 96th st - 97th st on West End ave. Terrace apts. She denies the bathtub was in the living room, so I must have been wrong about that. She said we were at the Train Station when we saw the lady with the cum trails down her legs. I'd forgotten this part, we were hungry and she said we reluctantly stopped at McDonalds, since it was open. As we walked out there was a man who was obviously starving and in rags. She said I just gave him my bag of food. (I don't remember that.) Near Macys? She said it was a dodgy area at that hour and we got out of there. The Italian Restaurant was on Broadway. That's where I saw the guy killed and dragged to the gutter. ETA, she just called me back, the apartment that had the bathtub near the kitchen was a friend of hers that we stopped by to visit. I don't remember where that one was. Edited by Mariah, Jun 4 2013, 06:22 PM.

So, from looking at the map of Manhatten, that would seem to be a pretty nice neighborhood, right NYers? Anyone know if it was in 1977? I really only saw it at night, and I wasn't in the right frame of mind to appreciate anything NY at that time. |

On a side note, when the actor who plays Pete was on WWHL Andy showed some pics and video of him as a child and teen actor and model. I had no idea he was a child or teen actor/model BTW. Dude was freaking HOT back in the day. |

On the commentaries it became really clear that "Peggy" and "Pete" had worked together a few times before, beginning as children. I don't remember them specifically talking about certain shows, but they know one another well from work. They were quite happy to be working together again. |
