SO ... now here's a new theory, one which a friend of mine noticed and I've not seen anywhere in any review -- Bob is Robert Morse back in the '60s when he was J. Pierpont Finch in "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" Apparently the record Bob was listening to is a parody of the book JPF reads and follows in that musical. Bob -- Robert? Working his way up the ladder rapidly? Maybe this is all Bob represents! And you heard it here first. Well, after my friend posted it on Facebook. ;) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJgaaAfhR5I |

That would be funny. Loved that movie. Makes total sense. Something reminded me of that awhile back. Probably in the beginning of the series when I saw Morse in it. Whenever I see him it's the first thing I think of. Didn't think about it watching last night since someone was talking when I watched the self help scene with the records. I think Bob was going to totally screw Ginsberg but then when he heard that he Hamlin wanted him to go with Ginsberg and good things about him he didn't say it. He was all set up to destroy him and thought better of it. I find him creepy as all hell. Plastic too - way more plastic than Don Draper with all his secrets and lies. Bob is like Zelig - he is everywhere. You heard that here first! lol - just joking but he seriously is. Does anyone remember that Woody Allen movie? Here is his description: Allen plays Leonard Zelig, a nondescript enigma who, out of his desire to fit in and be liked, takes on the characteristics of strong personalities around him. I also can see why Pete was probably hot and and adorable youngster with dark hair and striking blue eyes. Bet he modeled too. Edited by cccharley, Jun 6 2013, 09:04 AM.

I wonder if Megan is already dead? Don went straight back to the office, remember? I dunno, the soldier was dead after all. A poster elsewhere just asked the question and it does make me think about that. http://www.uproxx.com/tv/2013/06/reading-too-much-into-mad-men-evidence-that-megan-draper-is-already-dead/#ixzz2VUjdu5K7 I still want someone to tell me what that neighborhood was like in 1977, if you know! It's seemed so near-seedy to me, but I only saw it at night. Now it looks like it's probably a pricey are. No idea about that either though. TIA! Edited by Mariah, Jun 6 2013, 10:50 PM.

Sorry, Mariah -- I didn't move to NYC until '88. No idea. ETA: That article is creepy. It makes me think Megan IS dead already. Why make a big deal of "we shouldn't have come straight back to the office" unless she's at home, dead? And that woman breaking in ... able to gain access to the apartment ... And the use of "here" in the hallucination talk. I will say, one argument that carries no weight is saying Don saw Anna before he knew she was dead -- he was expecting the news, he knew she was sick. In those circumstances, you could imagine them coming to you as an angel. But the rest of his argument is very compelling. Except, why would Betty be pissed and say "She's twenty-five!" ... too young to die? no. too old to be pregnant? no. too young to get a starring movie role? no. Don saw a woman getting out of the pool who was a lookalike for Megan -- I think that's possibly why he saw her in the hallucination. She had talked to him about taking a dip in the pool, plus she had told him to avoid actresses ... and he just reattached to her and was breaking the trust again. Argh. I just want to know already. If they end it all mysteriously like THE SOPRANOS ... I'll be pissed. Edited by IcyAll, Jun 7 2013, 02:00 AM.

This show is becoming the new "Lost" with all of the theories and the need to rewatch things 2-3 times because you miss stuff the first time. I never saw the movie "How to Succeed in Business". I'll have to see if I can rent it. |

It doesn't remind me of LOST at all, because it's not held out there as some mystery to solve. It's just that the writers and set/costume/actors/directors/music/crew put SO much thought into every single thing they do that there are always things to discover. The nice thing is, it's a great show even if you never discover all of the layers. It's more like a mille fleur, just layers upon layers of goodness. It reminds me of Lost in the sense that all of these subtleties go whoosh right over my head. Then I have to read others ideas and theories because I never notice half of that stuff myself. I never would have guessed that Megan might be dead. I didn't guess the ending of The Sixth Sense either. I think I'm kind of dense when it comes to stuff like that LOL. I just take it all at face value. |

I didn't guess about Megan either. I think that's one reason that on this show I really love reading the good recaps. I am glad I have the DVDs too, almost every episode has a commentary, sometimes 2, and everyone one of them shows how very much all involved in the show bring something special. I also love some of the historical footage they have--that entire KKK ad for example, and a 3 part documentary on Medgar Evans, and another on women during this time--the changes, a really interesting one about divorce back then (it was not easy!) Just tons of stuff. Lost was all a sham, we all guess they were dead in the beginning and the producers lied their asses off, so I have an ugly taste in my mouth when I think of it. With this show, looking for clues is more about deeper meaning than discovering huge "whys" but I know what you mean. Luckily, it's good if you only look on the surface as well. |

I'd still like to see me some Sawyer though I didn't think Megan was dead at all. I thought it was all the drugs. What happened? did she fall off the terrace? I just thought that their marriage was dead from the phone call between them. Guess we will find out Sunday. |

So I just did a search of Bob Benson and what do I find but just today a blogger said he was a Zelig like character. Can someone read our posts? Lol. It's my idea. Not fair. It was just published today. June 7. He also talks about BB being a spy. So much fun to see what their intentions are for BB

See, I have a different reaction to Bob. I don't care who he is. To me he is intruding on the scenes of the regular characters I know and love. I'd much rather see more of Ken Cosgrove, for example. I'm debating recording the rest of the season and then watching them all at once when the season is over. Last week was so disappointing to me by itself. If I don't enjoy the episode it doesn't matter to me what is symbolic of what and what parallels are being drawn, etc. Just tell the story, Weiner! I didn't read "Megan dead" either. |

I still think that Bob will be the new Don at the end. His name won't really be Bob at all. weaver, I really don't understand, and I am so not being argumentative or mean here, I really want to understand what you mean by "just tell the story!" I so mean this and wish we were sitting in the same room or something so my tone of voice and face could convey that better. I can certainly understand just not caring for the episode. I am lost about the story comment, and will try to explain a bit below. To me he really IS telling the story, and he did it so well here--everything broke in 1968 and divided, and nothing was ever the same again, all rolls changed--it was the start of a completely new, more jaded, more angry, more involved time. Advertising really was part of what was "out" or wrong with the world. People like Don no longer had that certain cache, they were OUT, the enemy really. California and the youth did move center stage. Just so much blew up--and for better or worse, everything changed. I think he captured it SO well, and in an entertaining and light way. For example, Joan's story. Women quit being "Peggy" and just grateful to the men for letting them be involved in business. Joan just FOUGHT for that, no longer the man-pleasing hiding her light worker-bee, she stood up for and KEPT what was hers. At the end there, Peggy got it, but still pointed out Avon better call. At the Democratic Convention, people stopped BEGGING their reps to take about ending that war, which all of us believed the murdered Bobby would have demanded. They stood outside with picket signs and demanded it, and were beaten and tear-gassed. (etc, all stories told of the shifts and changes that really did begin to impact everyone, including the Mad Men characters) Things were violent and change demanded. Maybe Don seeing himself dead in that pool was part of it too. Men like Don WERE "dead" now, in some ways. Formerly powerful and doing whatever the hell they wanted to, the coolest of the cool, envied by many, respected by almost all. His former safe haven of California turned into a mess. Anyway, I'm not trying to ramble but to me, in fairly deft ways, with every character on screen, he was able to show so much of the shifts that really were happening in their worlds. Even Don's marriage showed huge changes. The little wifey wasn't going to blindly follow Don anywhere, stay home, cook, clean, and have his babies--she wanted MORE. Many women started to want more than just caring for husbands and kids and dishes, and for the first time ever, in masses, they could explore their talents or make their own money, get a job, RISE in that job (fighting every step of the way to do so, but it was at least possible.) Another of the divides/changes shown last episode. A Tale of Two Cities was really about all the changes that solidified in 1968. "Us" vs "Them" in every way, every story, men/women, NY/LA, young/old, Hawks/Doves, Chaugh's group/Don's group at the office, on and on--shifts that force everyone into new stories. In real life and on the show. |
