Icy, I think this is the one show where they don't get advance copies. Weiner is really a stickler about any spoilers getting out, so, even for press, I don't think they get one. (Can't swear to that, but I'm pretty sure I read it.) Weaver, I think the steam room guy is afraid they will lose Buick to SC, since Bob Benson is being poached by them, probably to run in-house media or advertising, and it's likely that Bob will want to hire back his old company, or something. I loved it too, but I've liked most of them this year. I don't think they are wasting my time, and "hippies" and counterculture vs The Morale Majority was one of the biggest themes as the sixties breathed their last breaths. Weiner's always done long set ups to make the eventual story believable. Megan and the rest of the LA crew are there for a reason. Megan giving a party at her hills home, where both artistic types and "hippies" attend and there is music, is not only a sign of the times, but IMO more set up for the Manson Murder shock that is about to hit LA. I just realized that Ted's wife might want to get out of there too, with her kids. They didn't know who did it for a while, everyone in LA was so terrified they might be next. Even when they did know, there were only a few of Manson's group arrested and the fear that others in the group might suddenly decide, or be told to start doing more was in lots of heads. Roger's daughter was interesting to me as well. She's the next generation of unhappy "Betty" and her arc. Raised to marry and have kids, and blah... Only she opted out of Betty's misery. Also, it needed to bookend Roger's choices as a father, and offer him that option to make something of his second chance with his son. Also, I'm pretty sure, Woodstock. Wonder if we'll hear of this? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stonewall_riots The Stonewall riots were a series of spontaneous, violent demonstrations by members of the gay community against a police raid that took place in the early morning hours of June 28, 1969, at the Stonewall Inn in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of New York City. They are widely considered to constitute the single most important event leading to the gay liberation movement and the modern fight for gay and lesbian rights in the United States. Weaver, this recap does the best job of explaining the whole steam room, car thing. Oddly enough, I got that one on the first watching, I usually miss that kind of stuff until I watch again. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/style-blog/wp/2014/05/19/mad-men-recap-welcome-back-bob-benson/

This was one of my favorite things from last night, especially the end.
It's just timeless, and "Peggy" delivered it perfectly. I'm glad to see one reviewer mention it. That, and most of the show really drove the "times they are a changing" home, and advertising had to change with it. Peggy and Don both sense/get that, and that's why they are the best, and such a great team. http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/tv/showtracker/la-et-st-mad-men-recap-the-strategy-20140518-story.html |

Just finished - I liked the entire short season. Love the mentor theme with Don and Peggy. Funny- the entire plane scene I was thinking of Fear of Flying and the zipless fuck. I didn't remember when it was published but it wasn't till 73. I went to Wiki and they said this: Jong describes it in exaggerated terms, terms reminiscent of the extravagant and unattainable visions proffered by contemporary 1970s advertising, women's magazines, or what the narrator dubs "whoreoscopes" Anyway - I haven't read any reviews yet but I only read one or two. Lots to come in what - 7 episodes? |

http://www.adweek.com/adfreak/mad-men-stars-pose-vintage-style-product-ads-your-consideration-campaign-157829 This is cool, the "ads" promoting the cast members for Emmy consideration. |

Thanks for the explanation Mariah. I got that Bob told Joan that they'd lose chevy but get Buick later. I was puzzled that Joan didn't mention part two in the meeting. Even when she mentioned it to Roger, she didn't seem to think it important (the Buick part). Roger then got what the spa guy was saying to him. I think he said "I want what you got." So I guess the rumor is out in the ad world. Oh, Slattery in the spa did not look like the dissolute drunk that he is. CCC, there is one epi left this year, and 7 next year. Sunday was not the finale, although it could have been. But I think it wouldn't leave time for all the machinations they'll need to thwart the plans to dump Don, get rid of Lou, and everything else they need to do. Edited by weaver, May 20 2014, 05:41 AM.

I love those ads! And OMG... looking at Sally's picture brought back memories; I had a pair of those lace tights! I loved this past episode, especially Don and Peggy. They have the most real/human connection of any of the characters, IMO. For a man who faked his past in life and at work, Don Draper is the most "real" at work as well (with Peggy). |

Loved, loved, loved it. Perfect ending. So many great scenes with all my favorite people. Love Roger coming to the fore again. And maybe buh bye Megan at last. I had not been able to figure out Chaough's arc this year, because I remembered how good he and Don were with Chevy. So it was the endless politics that got to him. And now we know how much he and Don really love the work itself. And now we know what the McCann guy wanted in the steam room with Roger when he said "you got what I want." He wanted SCP, or at least the best of them, ESPECIALLY DON. Harry Hamlin take that!! I remember watching the moon landing, all huddled around the TV. It was a Saturday. So real I was transported back. Lovely send off to Robert Morse. I saw him in so many plays doing song and dance routines. So has Don really learned what makes life worthwhile? Anyway, he'll be filthy rich and that won't hurt! I won't read any reviews, I just like my own interpretation. |

Well, almost all of the reviews agree with your impressions, and I certainly do. I think that was the best episode ever, or at least it ties with last week's and THE SUITCASE for me. I seriously hope they do commentaries on the DVD's, and also that they release these two 7 episode "finals" as one big DVD. Like Joan, I'm practical about the money end of things. ;) Nice Q & A with Robert Morse here: http://blogs.amctv.com/mad-men/2014/05/qa-robert-morse-bertram-cooper-2 (There is one with Christina Hendricks too) Edited by Mariah, May 26 2014, 05:37 PM.

That was very nice of Weiner to give tribute to Morse, and it fit in perfectly. I think Weiner's writing for Joan has been pretty lackluster though, hope he makes it up in the final seven. I know she blames Don for not having gone public before, but she's carried the grudge for too long. She should be mad at Roger. I never felt I had a good read on Joan's inner life. As partner, she must be earning a decent salary, so she can live a lot better than she does. Don't get it. If she gets a million out of the McCann buyout, it will be interesting to see her changes. A million dollars was a fortune in 1969. Course the McCann thing may not happen, who knows? (Also wondering if Anna's niece (Stephanie??????) had the baby, and if we'll ever know, or will that all be dropped with the end (I pray) of Megan. ) Jessica Pare actually did good work this year; I just thought things were going nowhere, and I never enjoyed the California scenes. Toe Weiner'sbest writing was in the SCD&P milieu. |

Going to California probably seemed like a logical move for the show, but I think it ruined it a bit. I also think Ted's unhappiness is about Peggy, not about questioning what he's doing for work. So will the show uproot him and bring him back to NYC and around her? that would be bad for both of them, IMO (as characters!) ;) |

I hope Peggy has moved beyond Chaough. I assume he and Peter will return to Ny under the new arrangement, especially after Ted pulled that stunt on the plane. Hey, that was worse than Don's drunken Hershey meltdown. He could have killed those people. |

I don't know why but I feel like I completely "get" Joan. She really should have been made partner when she saved all their butts after "Shut the Door, Have a Seat." Without her SCP would never have left the talking stages. She was the one who knew where and what they needed, and organized that last minute move and new place of business. She should have been made a partner THEN, and had she been a man, she might have been, or demanded it. When Lane died she seamlessly took over all of the finances, again a pretty valuable asset our Joanie. Lane, Pete, and Joan didn't benefit from the original sale windfall (from the Brits.) Joan was making around $10,000 a year, and on her way to becoming Ida Blankenship, the former "hellcat." She was nearing forty, divorced, with a child, in a world where very few women made that kind of money in the workplace. Don just drunkenly tossed it all away, made his own decision, mostly out of a snit that his talent alone didn't win Jaguar. He blew $1 million dollars (about $5 mill + today) of JOAN'S money. He then blew of Hershey, which would have netted her a ton of money as a partner. I think Joan is just all about being practical, and businesslike. She likes Don as a person, but as she said, the business was running just fine without his drunken, impulsive, unilateral actions. He was a mess, and he made her life messy. Joan's always liked organization. Anyway, I was thinking, I don't care HOW much I liked someone I worked with, the first time they cost me $5 million dollars I'd be over it. When it kept happening? Oh hell no. She knows Cutler was grooming her to be on his side, but still, Cutler was the one who recognized that SHE brought in Avon, and that other account, and moved up up to the second floor, finally removing her secretarial duties and stink. She was finally safe, and more than just the former secretary that spent an awful hour saving their company by letting that pig have her. Remember, they were about to go under because Lucky Strike had just bailed? They NEEDED Jaguar. I do agree though that Weiner hasn't written Joan's attitude reasons well. A quick glance at Twitter is all it takes to realize that. Here's the MAD STYLE blog: http://tomandlorenzo.com/2014/05/mad-style-waterloo/ TWO FAVORITE LITTLE MOMENTS: 1. Harry being too late AGAIN. Ha! 2. Cutler calling Lou a hired hand and telling him to get out of his office and back to work. ETA, just found this, a really nice little interview with Robert Morse about the ending. http://insidetv.ew.com/2014/05/27/mad-mens-bert-cooper-farewell/ Edited by Mariah, May 27 2014, 06:19 PM.
