There wasn't much of an explanation. Perhaps they were taking care of her since her mom died - or was it her dad? Obviously it's part of the plot for Betty. There will be more Joan. Maybe a lot more with the baby and Roger since he's going through a crisis.

Wow, HAIR, TET and the attack on the embassy all get a mention tonight.

Just had to say that blond that Pete cheats with? In the first scene she has, she's wearing my 1968 hair. I would have been 15 right then. I actually have an old photo and my hair is identical to that back then, same color, same bangs, all of it.

Trippy.

Peggy trying to be a nice boss, then rolling her eyes <3!!!

Oops, just saw the premiere double episode. I am confused about the identity of that girl, the violinist, too. I thought maybe she was Betty's stepdaughter, whose mother died -- did Mr. Betty (can't remember his name -- HENRY!) Did Henry's first wife die? So maybe that was his daughter? If yes, then Betty should have told him ... but if yes, I can't imagine him not knowing or caring. So that was just odd.

I'm a sucker, because I always want Don to win. It's why I enjoy the show, because even when he loses (Betty, his house in CT) he manages to win.

Yeah, Weaver -- that "NYC" seemed more like the one in the '70s during the bad times/economic struggle ... not the Free Love era at all.

A lot of kids went to San Francisco at that time, so the girl trying to get to California was fine, but again: WHO WAS SHE?

Betty brunette? Just no.

I thought last night's was brilliant with an unusual amount of plot.

The scene of Don and Sylvia in the restaurant was so well written and so well acted, thank heavens it wasn't Megan's scene. Wonder what restaurant that was?

And Pete got a chance to shine, Pete and Trudy are both good. Pete can't get away with what Don gets away with, what a dumb choice he made, the second bad choice.

I didn't buy Peggy releasing the ketchup info to Chaough (sp?). She's far too clever.

And Don's pitch to the Jaguar guys, wasn't it too obvious? I was afraid TPTB would think about taking the account away after the bad pitch. It was a great scene though.

Shouldn't Joan spruce up a bit? She's partner now, and she looks schlubby. There were better clothes available in 1968. What a knockout she is in the Johnny Walker commercial. Her line to Mr. Jaguar about not seeing parts of his body was priceless.

Well, if you want to stay totally legal check your library. You can probably check out all of the seasons on DVD up through the current one.

It was driving me nuts trying to figure out who the actress was playing Sylvia. It's Linda Cardellini from ER and the Scooby Doo movies!

I can't stand Pete and he's not good looking at all. I'm surprised he gets his wife to sleep with him much less anyone else.

I think I just realized what will happen to the violinist. She's heading to California, probably hitch-hiking. I'd bet money she's going to hook up with Manson, the timing is exactly right, and this is a dark show. In early '68 he was in San Francisco and driving the California coast frequently. As for who she is, the show never really clarified, but remember that friend of Betty's that was always around? Maybe it's her daughter and she died? Or just a different friend of Betty's and they knew her growing up?

I bet it's the teaser for next season. In the last episode Betty will get a letter from her, mentioning Charlie and that they are moving to the ranch.

I'm really missing the Don/Peggy interaction.

1968 was really dark, the summer of love was over, and the world felt like it was falling apart. The TET offensive started it off Jan 30th, and the news was just horrible, despair and anger were beginning, so many were dying! The news was blood and gore daily. So, Mad Men is already at the end of January with this episode. I listed a bunch of this stuff upthread, but wiki has good timelines of when things happen here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1968

In February students start dying in protests, both civil rights, and anti war. In April MLK will die and cities will burn. The entire tone of the world changed that year--and it looks like Mad Men is going there.

ranjake if you check the downton abbey thread, I did link that website. It had Mad Men on it, and I didn't have any issues. However, I can't vouch completely for it! I watched season 5 there because the DVD prices were to high still. As I said above though the prices are really cheap to buy the DVD's and the extras are great.

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=mad+men+dvd&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Amad+men+dvd

$12, $13, and $15 bucks for all seasons except the last one which is still at $20. For complete series though, those prices are good. HBO charges around $30-$40 and those prices almost never go down.

These events don't seem to affect Don much. Notice his reaction to Vietnam this week? He compartmentalizes everything. Don't even think it will affect the agency, except he will realize he might have to tailor his ad concepts to a different audience. He is smart enough to know this. This week he was focused on the past, man, woman, mother, whore. That is where his head is.

Even Peggy seems so involved in her job now, that I think her days of smoking weed in the Village are over.

Yeah, the events are always just background, and though they set tone, they aren't storylines often, other than the whole LSD thing, abortion stories, the plane crash, and the guy going on the Freedom March with his black girlfriend. Well, and all the reactions to the Cuban Missile thing and JFK's assassination Don's always "whatever" unless it impacts business, but the other characters react.

I don't expect a story about Manson, but I can really see Betty getting a letter or phone call in the last episode or so, mentioning this wonderful guy, Charlie, and all of her new girlfriends. It would be chilling for the audience, but not have much of an effect on Betty or anyone else--just a spooky eery tone, much like the season so far. It seems so Mad Men to me.

Anyway, just guessing. We'll know by the season's end.

Interesting recap, especially since they caught this and I totally missed it!

Quote:

It's only the third episode of the season, but remorse is slowly encroaching upon the sinners, even those who have been taught from an early age that it's OK for your stepmother to sleep with her sister's lover, which Dick watched, Psycho-style, through a keyhole. In Don's case, he's still got a score to settle with Herb Rennet, the smarmy Jaguar rep who awarded SCDP the automobile account at the expense of Joan's virtue. Not only does Don refuse to shake Herb's hand, but he goes out of his way to sabotage a meeting with Jaguar, rebelling against SCDP's Nazi collaborator-like behavior (hence the episode title) of blindly giving clients whatever they want.

Wow, this show is really picking up the action this episode.

I nearly choked at the swinging couple trying to pick up Don and Megan.

Who will survive? Mr. Hollywood or Joan? My money's on Joan.

Pete is an idiot to cheat on her!
