I think it will be interesting to see how it plays out for the firm because they think this Chevy is going to be the next big thing and it won't be. I was reading on Wiki and I think Peggy took the job with the new firm because she was creative director there and now that they've merged with SDCP she will go back to being under Don again. But when she mentioned that she'd just bought an apartment I think that was to show that she's stuck with the new merged firm because she needs the income. |

I loved this episode. OK, we found out that Johnson wasn't running and McCarthy and Kennedy were running, but it didn't interfere with anything in the plot. Made no sense to me that the others were plotting to go public without Don's knowledge (surprising) , and Don planned to merge with Chaough without the others' knowledge (not surprising), but I didn't care because I like the end result. Even if the new car fails, the billings will be able to get them through 1969 and the end of the show. It will be interesting to see Peggy with Chaough AND Don in the office. She's got to dump that loser boyfriend of hers. Yes its nice that he writes some articles now and then, but he chooses where they live (which she hates) and she pays for it. Were they supposed to be in the West 70's? That area really wasn't that bad in 1968, contrary to the way Weiner portrayed it. Poor Pete, everything goes wrong for him. Now he lost Trudy and lost Vick, and Don won't even go to dinner with him. I loved the dinner with Jaguar guy and Don, Megan, and Julia Ormond (bring her back!). That Jaguar guy must have played every cop ever on TV. Joan is getting some moxie at last. Hope she gets more power in the new agency. And best of all, Roger is back, and he GOT CHEVY! With help from Don, of course. Loved the scenes with the stew. Weiner gives him the best lines. Weiner has really softened up the Chaough character this year. He seems to be a nice guy and I don't think he was before. Now I'm really looking forward to see what happens. |

Thanks Willy. I too was thinking it was probably the Camaro - not being a car enthusiast I had no idea when that came out. Yes, Peggy is already the Creative Director in her new firm so I wonder how this will work. I'm happy to see the characters back together. I loved Joan realizing that these men whored her out to the Jag guy all for nothing now and telling Don what she thought about it. And speaking of Pete, hahahaha. His father in law knew he could pull the Vics account with impunity because Pete would only have two choices: keep his mouth shut about seeing him at the party house or tell Trudy and have her hate him thus ending the marriage for good. Win/win for the old horndog. |

Except it will probably end his marriage too. Also, daddy didn't realize that Trudy and Pete are separated, so him going to a whore doesn't carry nearly the sting of his multiple adulterous episodes WHILE they were actually fucking. Maybe in the end it will soften Trudy to infidelity, since her beloved daddy does it too? |

Peggy will not be creative director at the new if rm. she will be copy chief so she was demoted I assume Don is creative director. Mariah Peggy wasn't a secretary at the old firm for years. She was a copywriter. I think Trudy is going to divorce Pete. Didn't she tell him to pack his stuff and leave? Maybe I misunderstood it but I t seemed more final |

She started as a secretary though, and even when she was promoted to copywriter, the guys kept treating her like crap, "go get some ice Peggy" or "go find out where Don is Peggy." Copy Chief for a major firm under 30 years old is, as Ted said, pretty damn good though. Then again, she has to put up with Don again, instead of running her own smaller shop. Good news for us anyway. Maybe Trudy and Mommy will hire the same divorce atty? |

While I think Trudy is definitely done with Pete I'm not so sure her parent's marriage is in trouble. I don't think she will even mention it to him or he will deny it and she will believe her father. You're right Peggy did just get a demotion. Don is a partner. Peggy is an employee. And now she's right back to reporting to Don. I'm glad she bought the apartment - it's probably the reason she didn't quit. |

Oh, another thing, Peggy would not have "bought" in that neighborhood. Buying was very uncommon then, except for Park Ave, Fifth, etc. A dump like the one she is in would have been a rental. I didn't see Peggy as getting a demotion, I agree with what they said to her, same job, bigger agency. And Don has always been good to Peggy, in fact she steals his lines. Don even encouraged her to go on to bigger things. She'll have a problem with Stan, but he's a minor character. I think this development opens up way more story lines, and they won't need fake ways to keep Peggy as a major character. I didn't have too much sympathy for Joan, I'm glad she stood up for herself, but she went into the Jaguar thing eyes wide open. Don was against it. And the Jaguar guy was dropping Don essentially by getting his own copywriter. It was a relationship that couldn't last once the Jaguar guy wanted the local radio spots. Oh, and I liked the way Weiner got in the first heart transplant story, through Dr. Rosen. That also exposed how there are politics in hospitals too. Now what's going to happen to Sylvia if Dr. Rosen gets a new job or moves out of the city? Edited by weaver, May 7 2013, 11:55 AM.

She could have bought - although rarely. I didn't understand the reference to getting the neighbors out - that would usually mean she rented or they were rent controlled and and then couldn't evict them even if they bought the townhouse. I guess we'll see. Weaver - I don't know how gentrified it was by the late 60s. I know by the late 70s things were way different but unless you were on CPW it wasn't great - especially around b'way. We'll find out more. I'm sure Joan did what she thought was best for her and the firm. She may become very rich by prostituting herself out. I guess inside she still feels guilty and that's her confliction. Hell you are right that guy has played a cop in every show and honestly I probably would do the same as Joan to guarantee myself a wealthy future. Put a paper bag over his head. I'm gross but honest. The only thing I off with the Joan character is she has a rich baby daddy. Why do that if you can get money for your kid from his dad? Not like a single mom living on welfare. Your kid can get the most. So your pride is too much to ask Roger for money but you have no pride to jump into bed with an ugly son of a bitch? This isn't like jumping into bed with Don. I love that Joan stood up to the men. weaver, yep, Joan went into the Jaguar thing eyes wide open, but she did it to get partnership, because SHE knows what she was worth to the company. I think what pissed her off was that she had the potential of being a millionaire slip through her fingers thanks to Don. She knows how Don is, he plays fast and loose, and she was OK with that UNTIL she lost the potential million. I agree with you, I love that the new plot line really opens up the opportunity for many new developments. |

That's how I saw it too. I don't see how she could be that pissed about Jaguar - she got what she wanted out of that deal. She let Pete get her hopes up about becoming a millionaire and saw Don's actions has blowing it. She even told Pete that Don wouldn't care about the money. And speaking of Pete - I could watch him fall down the stairs all day long. Ha! |

Did any of you ever practice falling downstairs when you were in your early teens? A friend of a friend taught me how to do that, and I got really good at it. She had a 2 landing stair case and the 3 of us would do it for hours. I flashed back to that when I watched Pete fall down the stairs! He did it well! I was thinking about the partnership. I think Don and Roger have the largest share, does anyone remember? Did Joan get 5%? I don't know how much Pete got either, but probably between Roger and Don they had the majority vote anyway, along with Cooper, and Cooper is smart and business savvy enough to know that they had to merge to have a shot. I think Peggy dropped a big clue when she was alone with Ted. She said something about enjoying working with such a positive person, and that not everyone was like that. Obviously she had to be thinking of Don, and now she's right back in there. I can believe a house in that area was for sale, even if it was mostly rentals. Also, her boyfriend has said several times that "lots of people" are doing it. I love the New Yorkers in this thread adding information and specifics ! In my head I kind of pictured it like the Haight Ashbury area of San Francisco. It WAS a dump, almost all rentals, but beautiful bones in many of the houses, Victorian and Gingerbread styles, all kinds. They were just so run down. A few people started buying, and fixing, and painting, and voila--the druggies and the rest were eventually driven out because prices soared, and the neighborhood became desirable and safe again. A friend of mine bought there and put a ton of work and effort into restoring his place and keeping it period--I loved that house, but such steep stairs and narrow hallways, all in fantastic woods, each carefully sanded and buffed. Had to get rid of all the LSD inspired paint everywhere. Anyway, that's kind of how I was picturing Peggy and her boyfriend (name?) just getting in near the ground floor when it was just beginning.. I doubt there were rules about kicking people out when you buy back then, but in NYC, are there now? It seems like Alex and Simon had that issue with their place. |
