Was the episode I taped last night a rerun?

I don't know. There is always one rerun. Last night's episode pretty much ended in a church office. If it didn't, you taped the wrong one.

FX is really giving the networks and even premium cable a run for it's money with the original programming.
They always have Mariah - did you watch The Shield? It was amazing and had the best ending ever. So perfect unlike Lost. I bet you did.

What happened to discussing this this week's episode? Is it somewhere else? I am starting to despise them although I know it's their job. At least it appears that guy as I call him felt guilty. I don't like the religious theme at all but I accept why it's in there. I never like these though so most likely you should disregard my opinions on this topic. It was very tense thought when he put on the gloves. I'm surprised he didn't take the money back though. If they did take $600 bucks from a child back in the early 80s they must be sleezy and something must be up with their church. It wasn't a donation from the parents even if the pastor said he thought they knew. This story is not over IMHO and this church will end up being not on the up and up. Hate that.

The church story doesn't bother me. It's natural that their children are growing up into people they simply don't understand, and because they have been indoctrinated since childhood to despise, it's so real.

They were taken as children, trained to both "be" American and to despise them. As she said, they see themselves as soldiers, and this as war, and people do die in war. They were told to have children to make their cover more believable, and even though they didn't really care for one another, they did it as a duty.

Then she started to fall in love with him a bit, I think his feelings might have been there sooner, but he hid them. Also, the kids started to grow up, have their own interests, and their own lives. It's easy to control toddlers, but they couldn't exactly preach the gospel of communism to toddlers and expect them to keep their traps shut in school, so they've never been able to share with their children either their philosophies, or their politics, let alone what they did for a living.

The scene where she makes her daughter clean out the fridge, then mop the floor, then fold the laundry is very telling about how she never had a childhood, or video games, or the freedom to just go off and hang out with other kids. It's just about the only option she has to try to instill some of herself into her daughter, of the way she was raised. For her that is hard work and discipline. I doubt either of them ever saw their own parents or siblings again after they were taken away and placed in spy school.

It's not uncommon that kids raised without religion seek it out. For the companionship, to just see what it's all about, or because a school friend they like is involved, or simply to rebel against their non-religious parents. Doing what your parents don't do is kind of what being a teenager is all about.

They feel awful that all of those sailors died because of faked plans that they stole. Araptnet is supposedly something important (thought I don't know why since it was first used in 1969) and certainly those stealth airplane plans are critically important for defense to the USSR. That base where they killed several people was extremely high security, and also had soldiers training there, all with weapons. It happened. I obviously bothered him the most that the civilian septic system truck driver died. He couldn't even avoid killing the one he tried to save.

Their lives are a mess. I really think most of that is they are on long term deep cover, but even more, that their innocent children are unknowing pawns in the Kremlin's game. That would stress anyone out. I've been reading real-life spy novels lately (Robert Baer and his spy wife) and the tension, even when in deep cover for a few months to a year is trying. Imagine living your entire life in deep cover, with no end in sight?

I love this show so much.

Anyone still watching this? I still think it's one of the top 3 shows.

Anyway, things are pretty confusing right now, and this review by Sepinwall has some interesting speculation, more than I had certainly. http://www.hitfix.com/whats-alan-watching/review-the-americans-operation-chronicle-you-cant-take-it-with-you

I'm watching but I just don't watch on time. Will discuss this week's soon. Look's like big stuff is going down so I won't read anything till I watch. I think the message last week was to get them out - the one on the toilet paper roll.

I guess I never have anything to add :) I love it- and I love listening to what you all say about it. That review was interesting- there is a lot to wrap up. I just think it's brilliant and so smart and intricate- but I have no insights to offer...

The review was OK, but it was really helpful for me because I'm a little bit lost, so I liked reading his speculation.

I really need to pay attention to the details on this one. I kept wondering if I missed something with the kid, but then after reading that felt reassured that, no, it's part of the stuff we don't know. Ha.

I always watch the reruns on this one too! This, Mad Men, and Fargo are so intricate and interesting I not only want to, I usually get so much more on the 2nd showing.

Did anyone think that minister looked a bit spooky last night? Maybe my "they're spies" idea will happen after all. hmmm

ETA LOVED the toupee thing, that's just about the only thing that has been bugging me about the show, how would she not know he has a wig? They can't be doggie style all the time.

I thought the Minister was creepy as hell- and am definitely 'pinged' by him- but I'm not sure how (for a change, with this show :) I am a dedicated watcher of this show- but I need more catch-up, too. Would love to actually do a marathon and watch this season through before the last episode.

This show is so good.

This article is great too, a long interview, I didn't realize one of the writers was former CIA.

There is at least one spoiler in the article for next season. It mentions a character returning.

One other one, I haven't read it yet, but the Rolling Stone always does a good job. http://www.rollingstone.com/movies/news/the-americans-season-finale-recap-spy-kids-20140521

Sepinwall's raved about it, he loves this show too.

Mariah, that is a great article! I just watched the last three episodes last night. This show is brilliant. I loved the twist, I love the acting, and the writing is pretty great too. I'm not surprised to see how seriously they take it. Thanks for linking it.

So many are saying that this is the best show on television now. I'm still more fond of Mad Men, but then again, we are only in the second season of this one, and I do think it has the potential to top it.

It's just so disturbing that it doesn't have that many viewers. This is probably the only show where I tell everyone I know to watch...sigh

I got so confused with Lee T's character (don't even know his show name) that's the one that confused me. He's on all the NY shows - remember him from Oz (if you watched Oz with Chris Meloni)
