Well, she WAS cold. It wasn't a loving relationship, it was a job to her. It's only in the past year that feelings began to develop for her. Before that, her emotional needs were being met by that black guy, don't know his name sorry.

Gregory! (Also hot)

I thought it was odd that she was that cold to her kids, too. But you can tell she tries with them.

When I think about it though, her coldness makes the show more believable to me. She's the idealist who believes in the cause, completely dedicated and single minded. The kids were necessary for the cover, the husband, someone she didn't care for, a mere cover for the important work she is doing. She needed to concentrate, never slip up, never accidentally say something in Russian, or give herself away, even in her own home because the kids were there.

It's a pretty stressful life.

It became more "real" when she, what, 10 years in or so, finally began to have romantic feelings for her husband, but he said traitorous things, and seemed to enjoy the USA life a bit too much, and that scared her. Worst of all, for a spy partner, he LIED to her. Their lives are constantly in one anothers hands in a very tricky situation. (Where does the apostrophe go, in "anothers?" Hell, I'm losing my mind...;))

Anyway, when your partner lies to you, that is a dangerous and potentially life threatening situation for a spy. Not taking things for granted, examining every angle is part of what they must do, practically every minute. The emotional feelings for her "husband" made her less sharp, and she can't afford that EVER. Especially when he lies to her. I honestly think that had he just told her the truth, they would still be together.

"I was mad at you, she was my old girlfriend, it happened and I'm sorry. Oh, and by the way, I may have been being set up, she told me some story that I had a grown son and asked me to run away with her. I didn't go, because I regretted it immediately. More important for US though is I need your opinion. Do you think we, or at least I, am still questionable to headquarters?"

Such a good show!

She lied too - she had feelings for Gregory - I don't think it was all fake for her with him. They all lie. It's their job as we know. Can't like every character and she is my least favorite.

Also - perhaps she just isn't as good an actor as the husband. I think she's great but I don't feel her love for her children even when she's touching her son's hair. Just my opinion. I really like her but she's no Meryl Streep

Back then though, they didn't have a real marriage, so sleeping with others was no big deal, they both did it.

This year the marriage became "real" to them, and that changed the whole game.

Do we know she lied to him about Gregory? Honest question, I just assumed he knew and didn't notice anything that revealed he would even give a damn until this year.

I don't think he knew the depth of their relationship and he may still not know.

I just don't see layers in her character. One dimensional. I've seen her do other roles better imo - I don't want to have to write that again like TWOP.

We shall see though. It's only season one.

It works for me because I feel like she is a very closed up character, cold, contained, wary, and suspicious.

I hated the plot devise of him not telling her the truth though, they wanted to break them up for some reason and used that. Mostly the fact that it could have indicated the KGB leaders still didn't trust him. I didn't buy it then, and I'm not fond of the break up now.

I'm willing to wait and see though, because, other than that, I really like the show.

Not trying to debate or be TWOPPY, just interested in the way others see this show. B)

Perhaps they broke them up to explore a bigger storyline. They will probably develop relationships outside the marriage romantically and attempt not to reveal and also try not to develop attachments. It's hard. We'll see. Not sure if they set a certain number of seasons for the show and have an end game if it continues to do well.

True.

I was just rewatching Alias DVDs and one of the extras had Keri Russell, Jennifer Garner, and JJ Abrams in a panel discussion. It was kind of cool because Keri talked about all of the accents and fighting Jen did on the show. Now she's doing it too! (well, to some extent)

She's a good on-screen fighter, I love it when she suddenly becomes deadly.

This show just seems so real to me.

(Even though I know they would have shot that guy themselves or ended up being shot themselves, KGB gave them direct orders and they don't play.)

Ugh. This show is too much for me. They are all such wonderful actors. Not a misstep by any. That ending ripped my heart out. It was so..real. Tge scenes with gregory and then elizabeth with the kids and phillip in the motel, it all worked so, so well.

Agree with you, mariah. The ending was so gut-wrenching, like you could feel elizaeths heart breaking, and she couldn't even show it.

I cried. Damn you, show.

Mariah, I know you don't like TWoP but there are multiple threads on the show there, active and interesting -- I mean to post more there. None of the bullshit you see elsewhere - self-moderating IMO for that show, thank goodness.
