OMG, I was obsessed with Travellers for a while. I had a whole long reply written out before you answered with My Big Fat Gypsy wedding and then I chucked it. To sum up: That's what happens when women are treated like children for their entire lives and have nothing to look forward to but their pretty-princess day because they're slaves every other day for eternity. And it's also what happens to an oppressed minority against whom there's enormous prejudice, because Traveller discrimination and bias is a real problem. But, god help me, I cannot stop myself from mocking their sartorial choices or their gawdy sensibilities. They think it's so classy and it looks like Marie Antoinette and 80's era Madonna produced a fluorescent dipped crotch nugget. |

Long ago on a thread on Salon.com's TableTalk I got into it with someone when I used the word "gypsy" -- they said that was an insult, because the word was derived from "Egypt" and meant "horse thieves" ... so all Egyptians were horse thieves and you meant that if you used the word gypsy. I know no gypsies personally ... but I wonder if the term, for all its origins, isn't a bit like hillbilly? I mean, hillbilly denigrates a class of people as another term meaning something like "white trash" ... right? But what hills? Them Thar Hills? There are hillbillies everywhere. One of my favorites is Dorothy Shay, but I digress. Other than the specific entomology of the word, is it insulting as a word alone? There was some Guy Ritchie movie where there were gypsy characters (I know, I'm still using the word!) and they were thieves ... was he being deliberately anti-PC? or is it sort of accurate? That this is how that culture survives, borrowing or outright stealing from others? Year ago watching Baz Lurhman's STRICTLY BALLROOM with a Spanish/Filipino friend, I was startled when he looked at the lead actresses family situation and said "oh, gypsies" ... I'd thought "Latin" ... I'm still not sure. See, I think the Guidices and Gorgas are white trash. I know they're second generation Italians, but it's not the Italian part of them that causes them to act trashy, IMO. It's that nouveau riche American thing, aka rich white trash? Have I offended? Please pardon. |

As far as the term 'gypsy' goes, all I know is that the people themselves prefer to be called Roma. So, that's what I try to go with. I, too, once got ripped a new asshole when I used the term 'gypped' in, what I thought, was a completely innocent post. But, gypped is a derivation of gypsy and refers back to the notion that gypsies will rob you blind. Thus, you got gypped. I don't know the origin of the term gypsy, though. All I know is that the Roma consider it to be derogatory so I try not to use it. |

It may not be alright to say gypped but you can use both nippy and niggardly in good conscience because their origins have nothing to do with the pejorative terms that they almost sound like. |

Count me in! I was indifferent to Melissa, at first, and wasn't sure I'd like Kathy. I didn't want to like them just because of my dislike for Teresa. LOVE THEM both. I think they add fun to the show - and it was missing for a long time. |

I kind of like Kathy. I think she's the one I'd hang out with if I had to choose one of them. |

she is the only one I would hang out with! Well and Lulu, put in beer in her and I bet she lets it all go out the window. None of that countess shit, more hanging out a dive bar nobody knows me kind of stuff (my favorite kind). I love to cook, am in culinary school, want to do something with that as far as a living...and no matter how repulsive Richie is, they are as a family pretty solid. |

I think I've finally come to a decision: I'm not watching Jersey this year. I don't think I can take these broads - from Tree's complete lack of self-awareness to melissa's self-aggrandizement to Caroline's face looking like she's smelling a fart all the time. Just can't take it. |

Since they've released a preview of the season, it seems likely. Funny, I remember in years past (like 2010) NY was up and running by February .... guess they've gotten pushed back. |

Ooops, I guess I missed the preview. I'll be watching the show though. Yep, I still hate Teresa and enjoy snarking on Clownie and her clan. |

Cosmo, the link to the preview is on the other NJ thread, at the end, within a tweet from Asshat. |

Oh, Icy! I love you and your talents... but why did you have to ruin a perfectly good Bouguereau? I love his paintings.... |
