OK, I know singing contests are not a popular discussion topic on this forum. So I'll keep it as short as I can before I kill everyone with boredom.

Tonight the judges and audience are over the moon with Candice's performance of "Somewhere." Seriously? Are they smoking crack?????

I love Candice. I want her to win the title although it will never happen. But I must have been listening to a different performance. She had one speed: over-the-top and unnecessarily filled with melisma. Her last note wasn't even on-pitch. This is a musical performance that the show is holding up as a standard of musical excellence?

Another example of how & why American Idol has NOTHING to do with promoting good singing. It's all about picking the pretty one who can belt it.

So sad. The real singers in this world like Rene Marie, Rebecca Kilgore, Sheila Jordan, Eva Cassidy, Jo Stafford, Marilyn Maye, Rebecca Parris, Wesla Whitfield and so many others have devoted their entire beings to their art. And yet, hardly anyone has ever heard of any of them. Be honest, do you recognize any of the names I listed?

There are lots of things wrong with this world. And I admit this doesn't stack up to terrorism or famine or war. But it seriously bugs. Music is a valuable healing tool in and of itself. The people who bring it to us don't receive one one-thousandth of the immense respect they deserve for sharing their talent.
