Okay - WHO WATCHES THIS SHOW? I can't be the only person to have watched this on here. I watched Spartacus Blood and Sand, the entire season, over the course of a weekend a year and a half ago. Gods of the Arena was okay, and just watched the first ep of Spartacus Vengeance on starz.com. It aired on Friday.

I miss my beautiful Andy, but can I still say I love this show so fucking much it's sad? And Lucy Lawless - whom I call Lucy Flawless, b/c, lets be real, she is - is just amazing. I love her.

If you're not watching, you really, really should - it's that good. I know some ppl have likened it to Downtown Abbey, which I've never watched. It's on Starz, but epis are available everywhere online.

I love this show too and I caught the premiere last night. I miss Andy but I think Liam is going to be OK in the role.

I saw an interview with Lucy Flawless about the upcoming season and she said "it will change suburban sex lives." HA!

And yeah, that show can be soft core porn. It's HAWT. Bring me a showered Doctore so I may do nasty, nasty things with him.

Oh my goodness. FINALLY. No one I know watches this, and whenever they tell me, I just wonder how that can be.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE it. Okay. When they went into the brothel/whorehouse whatever, I rewound that shit like three times to see exactly what was going on. haha. At first I was like, 'wait, is he getting fucked in the ass by another dude?' Nope. Fucked in the ass by a hooker with a very modern looking strapon. haha. I paused it when it was the four on one to see how that was working out. Dear lord. Seriously, though - it is definitely porn and it is HOT. If ancient Rome really looked like that...

I think Liam will do well, too. I don't know if I like the new woman he's with. I forget her name. And that was really awful about Aurelia, too. I guess having words carved into your forehead will change your mind about a person.

Rome is kind of my 'thing' as I studied classical archaeology in college so I would't miss this show for the world. Oddly, I hated that HBO show called "Rome."

The new magistrate (or whatever the hell he is) the one with the son and the daughter - the son is trying to catch Spartacus before Glaber arrives, the daughter sits around the arena box being sarcastic. Did you get an incest vibe off the brother and sister? At one point I thought those two were gonna get it on.

Ah yes. The brothel scene. Quite an eye-opener. I remember one during Gods of the Arena where one of the house maids was fucking a slave while some aristocrat looked on. Then, while she was on top, he bent her over and I was all "what the hell?! OH MY GOD, IT'S DOUBLE PENETRATION!"

Jeebus.

Yes. I got that, too. Pretty sure the brother and sister are banging on the side. It was so creepy when they were sitting there talking and she said something along the lines of being something so valuable or something. ugh.

How does the show compare to what you know about Rome? Obviously, they have took alllootttt of dramatic license, but do you think there is a bit of authenticity in it or not?

I remember that scene. Obviously the producers/directors/writers have studied up on their porn. I believe in the four on one brothel scene the phrase "air tight" can be used. jeebus indeed.

And I hate Ilythia so much that I love her. From the preview it seems as though Doctore is going into the Pits in the next episode. I hope they don't end up killing him off. I know they said that we'll be surprised by who dies, but I hope they keep the core characters. I was sad when the masculine half of the gay duo was killed off in the first season - I forgot his name. Which reminds me - i wonder what Asher is slithering around doing.

Doctore will remain. According to primary sources (of which there are few) the slave rebellion (technically the Third Servile War) was led by Spartacus, Crixus, and Oenemaus (that's Doctore). So, he will survive to make it out of Capua, into the hills, and start the rebellion. There's nothing in the history that I'm aware that pinpoints the death of Crixus or Oenemaus. Spartacus is believed to have been killed in the final battle though his body was never found. He was *not* among the 6,000 captured who were then crucified lining the Appian Way.

There is some truth to the show but the early stuff we've seen so far is largely dramatic license. About all we know for sure of Spartacus' early history is that he trained as a gladiator at the House of Batiatus. There is disagreement over how he got there (although being a captured foreign officer is one of the stories). There is nothing in the histories of his wife or what happened in the ludus. All that is known is that he and a group of house slave and other gladiators fought their way out of the House of Batiatus.

But the stuff about patronage and conniving and scheming and backbiting - that's very Roman. It's accurate to the extent that it can be given that there is no clear history of Spartacus. That's one reason they've never given his non-Roman name in the show - we don't know. Spartacus is the name he was given in the ludus and that's how he was known.

ICY - you will NOT be disappointed. Also, if you start from the beginning - Blood and Sand - keep going. The first few epis are a bit tiresome, but they get so much better.

Momo - i did not know that. I'm kind of a history...dullard, so with the exception fo Spartacus, I actually thought all the other characters were fictional. I wonder if they are going to do the happy ending - since Spartacus was not found, if they're going to make out that he goes on and lives happily ever after.

It's very insightful, hearing your take on things, since this is your area of study. I actually always wanted to know, and maybe you could help me out - was homosexuality out in the open back then? I know people make the jokes about the Greeks and their boy love as well as the Romans, but I wonder if it is being accurately portrayed in the series. It seems not accepted, but not unaccepted. Just something that you don't talk about or acknowledge even though you know it occurs.

Gak. You two have strong stomachs. I found a free first episode online and started watching it. WAAAAAY too much blood for me. And I'm usually hard core.

Maybe I shouldn't have started with the first VENGENCE one, but that's what was for free and online to view. Don't have STARZ.

Sorry, girls ... carry on.

Haha. Should have written a disclaimer, Icy - it does tend to get quite bloody.. but I feel the bloody portions are a bit amusing b/c they are so 300-esque in their CGI-ness. or at least I think that's what it's called. And, unfortunately, it wouldn't have matter which season you started with - they are all very violent with lots of blood and gore. There's an episode in the first season where they cut a gladiator's giant penis off. I take it the thought of seeing a giant penis (though i think they said it was fake) is not enough to convince you to give it another go? ;)

I love this show - there's something about the homoerotic undertones and all the sex and violence that just gets me. I missed the last few episodes of Blood and Sand - and I found the prequel to be just meh.

Explain this to me - the blonde (kinda horsey one) who is minding after Lucy Lawless - is she from a previous season? Was she one of the members of the big orgy they had during the first season? Did she and Lucy get it on? My memory is so fuzzy, but I was determined to get through the first episode of Vengeance and I did.

Oh and yes - total incest vibe with the siblings.

Ilythia! She is married to the Roman General - I think Glauber? - who sold Spartacus and his wife into slavery. Remember way back in the first episode of the series some Roman soldiers attacked Spartacus - he wasn't Spartacus then, but I forgot where he is from at the moment - and Spartacus knocked him off his horse (I think), but ended up not killing him. Glauber then found Spartacus and sold him and Sura into slavery, and when he saw Spartacus again made sure to tell him how all his men had raped Sura.

Anyway - Ilythia despised Spartacus b/c she saw him as the reason her husband fell out of favor with her father and didn't advance higher. And, obviously, Spartacus hated her b/c he knew her husband ruined his life and led to the death of his wife. Also, remember when Ilythia wanted to fuck a gladiator and they painted her and Spartacus in gold (or it may have been just Sparty?), and both of them wore masks so they didn't know they were actually having sex with each other? so, that's who the horsey one is, which is the perfect way to describe her..

I think the prequel, Gods of the Arena, was eh, but it was done quite well for something that is supposed to be filler.

Also - who the hell stitched up Lucy Lawless? I wonder if it is Asher....he must be around somewhere.

Clearly I love this show too much...

Doctore killed Asher for being a part of the plan to kill the gladiator who everyone thought had won his freedom. Nevia told doctore about it as she was being hauled away for having sex with Crixus. Then, in the finale episode where they all break out, Doctore uses the uproar as a chance to confront Asher and kills him.

Momo, Shopper - have you been watching? Just got caught up a bit earlier today. I'm thankful that it's finally hitting its stride. Damn, though - I would have ditched Naevia as soon as they got out of the mines b/c she has done nothing but gotten lord knows how many men killed.
