Yeah, he said even if they have a gun RUN. One shot is unlikely to kill you especially if you are moving
Serpentine, Sheldon.
I loved the Inlaws. Alan Arkin was great in that movie.

WOW Ryebread, what a coincidence!

My sis was in SLC Utah, just walking home from school. Where was your SIL and what happened? Yeah, they had so much evidence on him, they didn't even CALL my sister to let her know the dude was caught, let alone ask her to testify.

She's OK now, always has been a scrapper. She (for years) seemed more bothered by the constant questioning from the police and FBI than anything else. We had no idea, and somehow never even considered it was that guy who was murdering those girls...I don't know why. Back then, I think it occurred to us that it might be the same one who was cutting up women and their body parts were found in Utah streams, but it was just too horrible to think about or something. She was abducted in '72 I think. I had moved to California by the time he was caught in '75, but I was home for a visit, so we all happened to be together when his face came on TV. (Family gathered together because I was home for a visit.)

Murder can tear you apart and cause so much damage, much like a suicide. It's just horrible what it does to a family. Natural death is horribly sad at times, but murder and suicide just wrecks people. So sorry about what it did to your family!~

He was a busy boy.

It's odd, she should have broken many bones in that jump down that rocky culvert, but the doctors speculated that she was in shock and had gone limp. She never did remember the fall, only that she saw that station wagon full of kids and opened the door and jumped, she didn't even look where she was jumping. Then the dad, nice Mormon family with 5 kids, made his way down to her and she remembers his face, and them helping her. They were all in shock, oddly enough, the shock of seeing her jump, but more, the car she was in speeding away instead of stopping too. No cell phones back then, so the dad stayed with her, afraid to move her, while the mom drove to a pay phone to call for an ambulance and the cops.

She couldn't understand why the FBI and cops kept asking her the same questions, for years, but especially in the first few months. When his face came on TV, she realized why they kept questioning her. It was a sobering moment for all of us. We should have put it together years earlier, but I think it was denial or something--just couldn't accept or comprehend that she was nearly murdered by a serial killer. That stuff happens to OTHER PEOPLE or something. It's weird to remember all of that.

It's weird thinking back on it. When she saw he was heading for the mountains she knew she had to get away. There had been a situation when dismembered body parts were found in one of the creeks coming out of the mountains, but I don't think there was that much information about it being connected to a serial killer at the time. Just some local crazy person or something was the speculation. SLC was really a very conservative, safe-feeling place, and crime seemed to be something that happened elsewhere.

After that? Denial maybe. It's not like we (and she) didn't realize it might be the same person who cut up that girl. We just didn't know the guy was doing it to MANY girls, who looked just like my sister. That part wasn't really even released until after he was caught I don't think. I've now given away my age...oh well. Anyway, WAY back in the olden days, there just wasn't as much media about this stuff. IIRC the details of his "type" and the scope of his crimes didn't come out until later. I don't even think they had completely put it all together, way before computers and modern crime solving stuff. Or perhaps they didn't want to let him know what they knew.

A few years later she was constantly being pulled aside and questioned because she resembled Patty Hearst. (We have different dads, she got the brown eyes and lovely long straight hair, I got blue eyes and blond wavy stuff.)

My cousin's 18-year old daughter was abducted at the mall in Portland, OR a few years ago. She fought off the guy when he stopped at a farm and ran and got away, suffering some knife cuts. Her younger sister saw it happen and got the police, but too late to follow. However, he was caught on video and a few days later they captured him and he's in jail now. He'd tried it with someone else, too.

I wish they had classes like that here, I'd put my nephew in one immediately. That is one thing that freaking terrifies me when his father takes him to the mall. All I can think about is Adam Walsh.

I know it sounds weird, so odd to think about. I remember the fucking vice-principal of our school (I was a senior, she was a freshman) doing a stand up in assembly about the dangers of hitch-hiking, imply she was hitching. He hated me (for Vietnam War protests, and because I had left the church) and took it out on my little sister by implying she got what was coming to her. Fucker! We were never allowed to stay in the room when the FBI was there, but another snippet I remember was hearing her yell at them "I ALREADY TOLD YOU!" She bitched more about the never-ending questioning than about the incident. After he was caught, she got it, but back then it was like she was mad that they kept making her discuss it.

She was two blocks from home, walking home from school on a busy street, she wasn't hitch hiking. That seemed to upset her more than the incident really, or maybe her fright finally found a vent there. I remember lots of tears and screaming about that assembly, and anger at the police for continuing to question her. Displaced fear and anger maybe?

So happy these stories had happy endings. Oddly I think that's why I will always live in the city. I'm afraid of parking lots and quiet roads. I like lots of people around me in apartment buildings. I feel safer living in a box.

Yeah, I felt safer in NYC than I do here in nowheresville, CA. Even though I was pick-pocketed once, pushed into an oncoming bus' path (I didn't fall forward as he intended and he was homeless and pissed at me for not giving him $$ and I called the cops who arrested him.) and have had numerous grifters approach me. Something about thousands of people within earshot gave me strength.

This was my husband's brother's wife's family.

It happened in Florida. I didn't know my SIL (let's call her Ann) until much, much later. She (my SIL) was a sweet, sweet girl. My BIL was the one who told us about her sister and parents - she never mentioned it. She clearly had some issues that manifested in anxiety and obesity. My BIL and Ann were trying to have children and weren't having any luck. I believe the sadness finally just overtook her so she took her own life. Her brother did the same about a year later. A whole family gone. So sad.

My BIL was just wrecked after he lost his wife. He (and we thought her brother) were just starting to heal when we got the news her brother killed himself, too. BIL has since remarried and seems happy.

I'm glad to hear your sister and family fared much, much better.

Oh ranjake, that is so sad. I can imagine the heartbreak for the entire family.

I've lived in big cities and in small towns or the country. I've had some close calls, but all were in big cities. On the whole, I feel safer in small towns. Almost no one even locks their door here, and pretty much everyone is armed, so crooks are more careful about robberies. We also have concealed weapon permits so I think crooks are more hesitant to accost just anyone. Response time from cops here is about 1 minute tops, small town. The last smallish town I lived in, more in the mountains, had budget cuts and a huge area to patrol. 2 sheriffs for nearly 100 SQ miles, so no one even called them, it was very old west, neighbors were the ones you called.
