I don't understand why Jill would put in so much money if they hadn't purchased. I know that my friend bought a place in Guildford, CT and it is STILL listed as "for sale" online. Sometimes they don't pull the ads down for a while because they want content at their site -- if someone sees it and is interested and calls to be told "that sold" at least the realtor has them on the phone to try to sell another place. Isn't this possible? Completely naive about RE, btw. |

Yeah, check it out, ccc. LOL, you think they screen calls for 212 codes? Hey, I have one too. Agree with you, the Bethenny comment is straight on, and the Mario comment was tongue in cheek, but it doesn't translate to the page. Jill blabs too much, but that's Jill and its one of the reasons I like her. Wonder exactly what Gloria said to Bethenny? It wasn't on camera, was it? I'll take that house any time, any how, any Hampton. They've had the US Open out there a lot, I think. |

Bethenny usually just ignores her, which I think kills Jill. By responding, she lets Jill know that Jill got to her. I still have a hard time believing that Bobby would spend 400k for the summer. |

Yeah, stupid on Bethenny's part, maybe she'll delete it later. Last year Jill had a gorgeous house, she tweeted pics, but it was just for August, I think. Bobby probably got a deal, but it is still big bucks, no matter how you slice it. |

I wonder how much it would cost the Zarin's to spend a summer month in France, for instance. Hotel, car, plane fare for 3, restaurants, shopping? If they took those kinds of vacations in the past, maybe Bobby rationalizes shelling out that kind of cash for a whole summer in the Hamptons because it's comparative. Plus, in the Hamptons he can go in and out of NYC for work all summer. On a smaller scale....My neighbor, here in Michigan, runs his pool heater from May 15 to September 15 - probably $600/mo. I personally think that's nuts, especially because it's been cold and rainy here lately. But he rationalizes the expense because he doesn't take a summer vacation. His pool IS his vacation. Wish I could get Mr. Rye to get on board with that thinking. It kind of makes sense, though - My neighbor is using his pool - was in his pool yesterday, in 72 degree weather, in the rain. But the water is 85. Looked fun and relaxing. Jelly. My neighbor's $3000 pool heat is Bobby's $400K Hampton rental. LOL. Rich people are different than us. |

I know, rye. I'm here envious about your pool! (I've told you that before). I know so little about the Hamptons -- we have friends who have a very posh-to-us house in Hampton Bays, and we go for 1-2 weekends at their invite each summer, and it's great -- our dog runs around, we take him to the bay and try to get him in the pool. We don't leave the house/pool, ever, unless it's picking up groceries/pies/alcohol. So the whole cool/not cool/rich/poseur thing of the Hamptons, and the clubs/restaurants -- I don't know a thing about it. Jill's house/rental is gorgeous, but I was also a big fan of Kelly's home. I would live there year-round if possible. Edited by Camo, Jun 11 2013, 09:59 AM.

My dad always whines about the heating bill for the pool but we won't go in unless he heats it. Costs hundreds just for the weekend. I want it at 87 - I'm so weird but I can really tell the difference between 85 and 86. He won't do it all the time and when the sun hits the pool it will heat it naturally so the heater will go off but in bad weather it's so not worth it. If it's cloudy it costs a lot more bc you have to set the temperature and it will keep running till it hits the set temp. |

Renting a house in the Hamptons for the summer means Bobby can run into the city ... to his mistress, without fear of Jill dropping in to see him at lunch. |

Icy, to answer your earlier question, I think it's still for sale. It's listed on two different sites, Zillow, Corcoran, and then also listed on a rental site. If you click the latest link I posted for that--that is the one ccc is going to call. You have to call for available months. Bobby doesn't work anymore, he's old and retired a few years ago, so he doesn't need to be close to the city for work, but maybe he wants to see his kids or just doesn't like to travel much anymore? I still don't quite get the Hamptons, maybe because I've lived the majority of my life near the Pacific, in California, Hawaii, or Oregon--and the variety of stunning beaches have me spoiled. Spending $100,000 for a month is just bizarre to me. Buying seems to make so much more sense, especially since to buy in NYC is so expensive. At least with buying you would have something at the end of the day. It's just long sandy beaches with grass and fairly cold water. For that much money I'd want sun and clear warm water. I was a nanny for a teenage boy with issues once. One of my university professors had a boyfriend with a gorgeous home in the Santa Cruz mountains with a pool. He was always gone and she asked me if I'd consider the job. I negotiated and my boyfriend came along. Anyway, they had a pool that was 1/2 Olympic sized and just gorgeous, and very warm. Every two weeks the propane gas guy came and filled the tank that was just for the pool. I'd write checks for $1000 or so each time. Blew me away back then. Loved that pool though! The hamptons isn't just a place with a beach and unlike 15 years ago a lot of people use their houses year round to escape the city since there are many more families living in the city unlike in the past when they all left for the suburbs. Fireplace and good restaurants. Money isn't an issue. As for the summer I guess you don't get what summer in the city is like here. I enjoy it at times for the most part because it empties out but once I started escaping it was great. The beaches are beautiful. EH beach was ranked #1 this year by the beach guy - he's a freak to me though. It's a social place for many - not just a beach town. There is tons of shopping and things to do if the weather is bad. Of course, you need the bucks to enjoy it. |

I could completely understand living there year round. I was there only once, in September of 1977, on my way to the America's Cup in Newport RI. I liked it a lot. I drove around the entire island, and a lot of the summer people seemed to be gone. I loved the locals though, but the beaches were kind of boring (for me.) Of course many of them are inaccessible since they are on private property. I'd just moved back to the mainland from Hawaii though, which does not allow private beaches, and well, they are all stunning. So I was kind of spoiled. I do get wanting a place to get away from the city, on weekends and vacations, so I understand buying, it's the massive amount to rent that is hard for me to understand. There are just so many wonderful places you could go for more luxury and even prettier places on $100,000. That's the part that boggles a West Coaster's mind. I kind of think some of it may be business and entertaining, and being where the power players are, or bragging rights. Maybe? NY is a different world. |

Different world - you said it! Not easy to find luxury with beautiful beaches, farms and light with a social life 2 hours outside the city. Most people don't or can't take off the entire summer, however, some do and work from out there. Where would they go without getting on a plane unless they have a private plane which many do. Some people go to fire Island. Some go to Nantucket or Cape Cod but all but FI are much further away. Guess it's just an east coast thing. Pacific Ocean is nicer but colder. It actually is really pretty out there. Maybe you need to come back. The beaches aren't private in the Hamptons. They tried to do that but it didn't fly. There are private passages to get to the beach but the beaches themselves are public. Edited by cccharley, Jun 11 2013, 04:09 PM.

That's good ccc! I saw a couple of beaches that looked nice but couldn't get to them--and I'm used to looking for access points. I loved the end of the Island the most, Montauk I think--the locals were so friendly, at least they were as soon as I opened my mouth and didn't have a Jersey or NY accent. ;) I got the local rate on my lunch too, apparently there is one. (was?) RI was pretty trippy too. It took me forever to get out of that roundabout, it's the first, and only one I've ever driven around. (and around, and around, and around) I loved it down by the sea with the boats, but the mansions just seemed kind of obscene to me. I found a black scallop shell on the beach there, and I still have it. LOVED the racing crews! They were so rowdy and so much fun, and welcoming, just wanting to party. |
