I was knitting while I was watching so I wasn't giving all of my attention to the TV. But, I actually liked her. She wasn't making any excuses and seemed to be willing to do the work to lose the weight. I'm glad Dr Now sent her to a therapist to deal with the guilt induced anxiety she's suffering from. The thing that really creeped me out was that she never wears shoes! I understand she can't access her feet like the average person but she could wear flip flops or have her boyfriend or someone put some shoes on her. The bottom of her feet must be like leather. |

Yes! The no shoes was really odd. I'm sure he's a really nice guy, but Rowdy seemed like such a loser. And it was rotten when he was eating fast food when she was trying to eat healthy. I really would like to see a Where are they now episode on her. |

Me, too. I really hope they include her in an update show. I also thought her boyfriend was an asshole for chowing down on fast food when she was eating something healthy. But, she really seems to accept that if she's going to succeed at getting healthy, it's completely up to her. Not whining and making excuses like "Rowdy kept bringing home hot dogs and fries! It's his fault I haven't lost any more weight." |

Do you think that her legs could ever be "normal", even if she gets to her goal weight? |

I don't know. If it's lymphedema causing her legs to look like that, it will be a lot more complicated to deal with after she loses weight. Lymphedema involves major vessels and requires a skilled vascular surgeon to remove. I noticed on this episode that Dr Now is a vascular surgeon as well as a bariatric surgeon, so he knows what he's doing. My Dad had severe peripheral artery disease and had 12 surgeries on his legs over the course of about 7 years. I learned a lot about it and it's pretty amazing stuff. When a vein is blocked, they harvest some donor vein from somewhere else on your body and do a graft. When Pop ran out of his own veins to use, I offered mine and learned that you can't do that. It won't graft successfully. So, in a pinch, they use teflon veins and hope for the best. If this girl's legs are just fat and excess skin, a less complicated surgery can make it a lot better without so many potential risks. Our former insurance agent had bariatric surgery and lost 200 pounds. She had to jump through hoops for several years to get skin removal surgery approved. She was very fortunate to not have lymphedema and after skin removal, she looks like a completely different person. Even after she lost all that weight, she had to wear caftans and other really loose clothing because she had so much extra skin she couldn't cram it into other types of clothing. |

Interesting about the veins! I would have thought you could "donate" to a loved one also. Dr Now really is a miracle worker. I hope they can do something to help Amber. I have never seen anything like her legs. |

I know I was shocked when the doctor told me that you can't use someone else's veins. You can transplant hearts, kidneys, livers, all sorts of organs but veins from someone else are rejected. Pop had teflon large veins that went from his crotch to his knees. One of them lasted for the rest of his life and one failed after a few years and had to be replaced with one of his own. Vascular surgery is amazing but I discovered that most vascular surgeons are real assholes with huge god complexes. The nurses at the hospital all hated dealing with the arrogant pricks. I got very good at dealing with them and I'm sure they all hated me because I didn't tolerate their attitudes ;) |

I could not look at her. I never noticed she wasn't wearing shoes. Did you see when she was cleaning the folds between the hanging flesh on her legs? I'll never understand how anyone can let it go that long..... I hope they can help her too. A friend of mine who had breast cancer ended up with lymphedema. She has to wear compression stockings on her legs. She's quite thin but her upper arms are very swollen. I don't think they can do anything for her. Maybe they've recommended doing the vein replacement and she decided to live with the situation. |

Yeah, how did she and/or her parents let it get that bad. Based on Rowdy shacking up with them, I'm guessing they have a hard time saying no to her. Any Penny updates? |

Oy...watching the Susan episode. I has high hopes for her after the initial 150 pound weight loss, but with the friggin enabling, 12 piece chicken McNugget ordering mother, I don't see how she'll succeed. |

This week's episode was really sad, I think her name was Pauline. If I were her son, I'd walk out and let her sit in that bed in her own waste. I tried to tune out in my mind my vision of her in the back of the car on that 5 day trip to Texas. I'm guessing the show supported them both for the whole year. There were no signs of anyone working. On some show, I'd like them to show the amount of money spent on food and where they get it. McDonalds is cheap but not if you buy 12 orders of nuggets a trip. She was a control freak like Penny, but she hid it better. I was a bit fooled for a while. Edited by weaver, Feb 22 2015, 09:00 AM.

It's amazing how fast food plays into so much of their eating habits. The NY Times outed Chipotles' calorie counts. My kids were on a Chipotle binge for about 3-4 weeks. The nasty side effects of having teenage drivers. We really don't do fast food. Our take out is sushi mostly. Maybe chinese once in a blue moon. Our town doesn't have any fast food stores. So when the kids were little it was only for road trips etc. Their fast food was bagels or pizza. But they were active anyway so it didn't really matter. Anyhoo, my daughter gained like 5-7 lbs eating chipotle. It didn't help that the polar vortex/snow descended at the same time. I was shocked. You can see how a sedentary lifestyle plus high calorie/high carb/high fat content food can really catch up. Luckily she's starting a new sport season and has to be in shape. So she is working at it and wants to eat healthily as part of it, and I don't have to say anything. Did you see the photos that just came out of little Honey Boo Boo. Maybe her mom is angling for this to be her next reality show. Poor thing has gained a lot of weight. Edited by Finestra, Feb 22 2015, 09:10 AM.

Damn, how did I miss Pauline? I'll have to DVR. Sounds like you are doing a great job with your kiddos, fin. Imagine that you notice a small weight gain and try to help and the idiot moms on the show don't do anything about hundred pound weight gains. What a mess that Boo boo family is. When you're short, 5-7 lbs shows very quickly! They are lucky to have pants that come in "short" these days. I spent my life hemming! |
