I'm watching, too. There are some shallow tools, aren't they? The one who hates ugly people has a very flat face. |

They really are. How much money did their parents steal when they fled Iran anyway? That little princess trying to shoot in stilettos was pretty funny though. So far, the problem I see with this show is that none of them are likable, or relate-able. Spoiled brats with stupid concerns, fussing over what designer clothes and accessories they have on? |

Coincidentally, my family line has married into Persian/Iranian families more than once -- a few of my cousins are half-Persian. I also worked for a man who left Persia when he was 18 -- since he's nearly 70 now, that could be around the time of the coup, I'm not up on my history. IN any case, those people on TV are NOTHING like any of the people I know personally. They are more "LA" than exotic, if that's what they were trying to sell, which IMO is what they think is wonderful about their family. That Raza ... he's funny in some ways, but just missed the mark for full hilarity. I scoffed more than guffawed. Though, on WWHL he said a few things I really liked -- like "I 100% don't care what anyone thinks about me" ... you go! boy? ;-) I don't find any of them attractive OR ugly. Just stupid people and there are plenty of those ... Seacrest: try again, please. |

Yeah, these are the spoiled rotten brats of, I assume, the Shah's good buddies or pals, hence the wealth. If I were Persian, I think I would be pretty offended by this bullshit. Lot's of people left Iran when the Ayatollah's revolution began, and many people left because of their fears about having a religious government, including professional people such as doctors. Many also stayed, thrilled that the Shah was finally deposed, and underestimating the heavy boot of a religious extreme government taking over, just happy to see the Shah gone. On the plus side, the Shah did modernize, educational opportunities were available for women, for example. On the minus side, and obviously I am completely over-simplifying this, the Shah and his cronies robbed the nation blind. I think what we are seeing here is the kids benefiting from money the Ayatollah's followers feel was stolen from the people. Poor Iran, going from the frying pan into the fire, extreme governments on both sides, and no good choices. New York Times |

And I actually found them very similar to the Iranians I know. My background is from that general region and I happen to live in an area with a very large Persian population, and sadly this group represents most of them: shallow to the core, and highly materialistic. Everything from comparing your daughter to dressing like a "village girl" to being offended at not shopping at the right stores, to being brand-obsessed. I know families here that are in debt up to their eyeballs but they will NOT be denied their Mercedes. Seriously, Every. Fucking. Iranian MUST drive a Mercedes. It's like part of the tenants: speak Farsi, eat khoormo sabzi, drive a Mercedes. Oh, and pepper every fucking conversation with how much money you had "back home," or how you were the Shah's seamstress/personal chef/advisor/fill in the blank. The only one I found tolerable was Asa, only because she at least seems to recognize all of the above, and because it looks like she'll be the one picked on for it. |

From the New York Times review, as linked above:
I've known three men from Iran, two who consider themselves Persian and are older men (one now dead) and one who only came over here 30 years ago and considers himself AMERICAN (and he is.) The one who is now dead was my uncle. He married my aunt in 1948 and they had six children, four boys and two girls. The second boy was born with mental problems, not sure if it was Down Syndrome or what, but ended up being institutionalized before I was born in the early '60s. They stopped having children for a while, afraid they'd have more children with the same problem, but then continued, having two more boys and the two girls. The boys all are strange, mentally odd, IMO. The father ended up abusing the youngest daughter, which my aunt ignored. He died 20 years ago. My cousin married the Iranian, had three boys. Eventually they traveled to Iran to visit his family there and he told me he will never let his boys out of his control over there -- they cannot go overnight with any one -- even other family members. His family of five is together most of the time when they're there. He told me Persian/Iran has the highest per capita of child molesters. I don't know if this is true, but he was 100% serious when he told me this. Now his father has died and his mother has moved to America to live with them. The other elder Persian was my boss back in 1986. He was absolutely determined to be wealthy -- and had brought no wealth with him when he emigrated at age 18 ... actually, I think he used the word "fled" ... he became a stock broker and accumulated wealth, but his wife couldn't have children, so he divorced her to marry a woman who COULD. And he did. Had two daughters, was satisfied, had an operation so he wouldn't be able to father more. I find this atypical of what I'm expected to believe via this show. I find all of this deeper than anything this show will reveal -- and of course, I understand why. But I find it a lie that's hard to ignore .... these things, these details I've laid out are not true of all Persians/Iranians either. I guess, FOR ME, ultimately, I can't watch a show about an ethnicity and what makes it "different" without becoming distracted by how much they're just like the rest of the world -- mixed up, a different personality for each person. I like the Real Housewives shows because they're about habits and lifestyles determined by wealth and location -- not ethnicity or religion so much. |

I think I am just on overload of all of the "rich" people squandering money while most of the country is struggling. I just no longer give a shit about them. Or I am close to that. I knew a few Iranians before the revolution. Two guys lived in our apartment building and were attending the same University. They were beyond full of themselves, and frankly, treated women like shit and seemed to expect absolute adoration. They also grew pot in a planter in a sunny picture window. We had a bit of fun slipping a warning under their door about that, and the plant disappeared. We couldn't really figure out why they thought they were God's gift to all women, aside from loads of money, but that attitude prevented them actually finding any dates. There was some kind of emergency in the building once, and I knocked on the door to notify them. Only one guy was home, and he was thrown off guard, and so dropped his guard and assholishness, was "lost" about what to do, and asked advice, and it was the only moment in two years that I actually liked one of them. After that, that particular guy was polite rather than smirking and leering (to me anyway) unless his friend was with him, then the arrogance/distance returned. Women/girls talk, and that was the general impression at school about the other Iranians at the U. The seemingly massive egos and misogyny were turn offs, in spite of attractiveness or willingness to spend money. They seemed a little bewildered about the inability to "score" with the stupid blond Americans. As someone who despised prejudice it really bothered me that I was creeped out by them, I tried, but it just felt icky being treated like that. Actually I don't know if it was feeling that I was looked down on because of my sex, my blond hair, or just me being American, whatever it was, it sucked. |

It's on tonight. I don't know if I will bother, nothing else good is on for the early showing of it, so...maybe. If I feel dirty again, it's being clicked off. |

Yeah, I'm gonna give it another shot. But it just seems so shallow...and this is coming from someone who watches a lot of crappy TV. |

OK, I don't watch Jersey Shore. Is this trying to be Jersey Shore for rich 30 somethings? UGH these people. If I want to watch people get drunk, I'll watch Tony Bourdain's show. |

Crap, Mariah. I think I may be hooked. When the portly one vomited on the couch of the nightclub, I was in. Damn, the flat faced one with the tiny mouth is bitchy. |

I knew you'd be there with me, disco! Oh shoot...how did I miss the pre-nosejob pictures? Loved that they kept showing the portly one shoving food in her face prior to her hurling. |

Just as I thought I had quit Bravo (seem to FINALLY be done with the howives), I find myself stupidly drawn to these people. UGH! I guess because I share a similar background (and that's precisely where the similarities end.) Reza is growing on me, though I sense he, too, can be very two-faced despite his claims of "keeping it 100%." One second he's telling GG that she's all class, and the next he's accurately describing her as bitter and jealous. I freakin LOVED what an epic fail GG's little scheme to make Mike jealous turned out to be. Not only was the guy she hooked up with not even all that, turns out Mike even knows the guy! Then she actually sleeps with him, and I don't care how progressive this group presents itself, these guys are going to have a hard time bringing home a girl who had a one-night stand on national tv. I think "I SHOP EVERY WEEK!" is now up there with "FAMILY VAAAANN!" and "Who gonna check me boo?" What a pathetic, useless existence GG leads. MJ makes me grateful that I'm not a drinker. Never understood why people get shit-faced drunk and make asses of themselves, ESPECIALLY if you're not some college-aged sorority/frat douche. |
