You have to watch because I can't be alone in this, LOL

i think the son might be the dad's, but the other two are Fitz' children. I doubt she ever had it checked -- could leak to the press, etc. But how happy was she when the dad died right before Fitz' got the presidency? I doubt they told her (the writers) where the story was going, because we could have seen a reaction shot back then to wonder over now ... but they're making it up as they go along. Somewhere I saw something about the actress playing the mom, how happy she was to get the role -- THAT was a clue. A one-shot, "then she died" gig would not be something to crow over, IMO.

I thought he died when he was president. Was that a flashback? I don't remember. Thought he came that weekend and they had a fight then he died. I must be wrong. Too long ago for me to remember.

He died just before the election results came in ... and the last thing he said to Fitz was "You're going to lose, because you're a loser" or something like that. I remember it was way harsh. I'm glad Barry is getting the work, but I'm with you on him being "Brad" in Rocky Horror or the Mayor in Spin City -- I think of him that way, not as this alcoholic asshole long-time politician who rapes his son's wife.

ETA: OMG, CCC -- I just went and looked up a few of the actors on IMDB --

Jeff Perry who plays Cyrus Beene ... is a founding member of Steppenwolf Theater in Chicago, was married to Laurie Metcalf (from Roseanne, etc.) whom he has a daughter by, and is married to the casting director of SCANDAL! ... AND he was in the original cast on Broadway of AUGUST, OSAGE COUNTY
Darby Stanchfield who plays Abby was on MAD MEN as "Helen Bishop" -- the mother of Matthew Weiner's son's character Glenn, the BFF of Sally -- in any case, Darby was on several episodes as the divorcing wife who worked for the Kennedy campaign and ended up fighting with Betty.
And the guy who plays James, the husband of Cyrus Beene? He is the producing partner of Lisa Kudrow!
And Bellamy Young, who plays Mellie, is a musical theater person who was in Sondheim's MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG

What an incestuous little group there!!

That is a disgusting sentiment anyway -- he's MARRIED. This is not some great romance. He's MARRIED. One thing I hate about this show.

Want to laugh. I remember cyrus from that don johnson show that took place in san francisco where he drove the yellow sports car. too lazy to look it up on imdb. he's been in many things as a character actor for years.

What an incestuous group they are. God I hate this show's stories and I still watch it. Mellie was on another show with Donald Sutherland a couple of years ago about a rich family. She co hosted the view last week. She pops up on lots of things too.

And you see, CCC, the mother is back ... and what's all this with "Winter Finale!" ... uh, does that mean the show will have a hiatus until some time in January or is it done for the "season"??

I'm glad that Huck is finally showing that he has the creds technically. Quinn annoys the fuck out of me. Yes, I get that she feels guilty, but the way to salvation is truth and she should know that ... she's always been a weak link, IMO. And "Olivia" hardly ever talks to her staff except to bark at them, so I'm finding it harder and harder to see why they would give a shit about her.

I guess that was Kudrow's time on the show and now it's done -- which is incredibly short-sighted of the writers, because with Hillary primed to make a POTUS run in 2016, now is the time to say something about that issue ... When "Harrison" was all "I'll deal with it" I KNEW he would end up in bed with the daughter. I wonder if the character will come back, pregnant.

‘Scandal’ co-star Bellamy Young shines in shocker

“Scandal” was Kerry Washington’s show. Until last Thursday night, when supporting player Bellamy Young, who plays First Lady Mellie Grant, hijacked the series away from her.

In a stunning flashback that won Mellie the kind of sympathy Olivia Pope — Washington’s hard-charging man eater — will never attain, we learned that 15 years ago Mellie was raped by her drunken father-in-law, Sen. Jerry Grant, a gruff blockhead played with old boy insidiousness by Barry Bostwick. The harrowing incident took place in the elder Grant’s Santa Barbara, Calif. home, where Fitz (Tony Goldwyn) and Mellie had come for a campaign meeting with “kingmaker” Cyrus Beene (Jeff Perry in a bad wig.)

Up until now, Mellie has been seen as a meddlesome third wheel who just doesn’t get that her husband is in love with another woman (Olivia). She exposed his affair during a television interview that actually hurt her standing in the eyes of the American public. In a bit of damage control, Mellie has consented to give an interview, and a White House tour, to a nosy journalist who is willing to listen to Mellie prattle on about the restoration of paintings if she can get a sitdown. But the unreliable Fitz, as usual, is not in his chair in the Oval Office when Mellie opens the door, prompting her to have a her own sitdown with her husband. “The least you could do is show up for me,” she implores. “Show up for me, Fitz.”

Narrating this portion of the episode from the first lady’s point of view, creator Shonda Rhimes candidly illustrates the sacrifices a much-younger Mellie made on her husband’s behalf, “the pieces of myself I’ve given away for you.” She kept her mouth shut about the rape in order to win the elder Grant’s endorsement for his son’s gubernatorial campaign, and to help their future together.

For her part, Young conveyed a range of emotions not usually seen on “Scandal,” which is the kind of soap where characters seesaw from white-hot rage to icy-black indifference in a split second with very little in between. In Mellie, the show has its most fleshed-out character and in Young, its most compelling performer. She painfully registered Mellie’s shock, shame, confusion and resilience. When the show’s timeframe returned to the present day, and Fitz did come through for the first lady –– sitting down for the nosy reporter and stepping in to answer uncomfortable questions directed at Mellie about his affair –– viewers could fully appreciate the extent of the sacrifice she made for her husband’s political career.

Young’s work is only one of the many fine performances on prime-time television this season. While the movies annually scrounge around for five actresses to put on the Best Actress Oscar ballot, TV has at least twice that many to nominate for a drama Emmy award. Most notably, there are the stars of CBS’s revitalized “Good Wife” and the Gothic scenery chewing being done by Oscar winners Kathy Bates and Jessica Lange and Oscar nominee Angela Bassett — so striking as voodoo queen Marie Laveau — on “American Horror Story: Coven.”

The television academy has nominated Washington once for Best Actress in a Drama Series. Let’s see if they remember Bellamy Young next July, when the nominations come out.

Me too - She hired a new PR firm obviously. I told you she guest hosted the View and now this. At least they are doing their job. I'm sick of Olivia's same clothes and same looks and same thing every week but that's not her fault I suppose, it's the dumb SR's writers though. That is the dumbest thing I ever heard anyway - she stole the show from what? She had one intense scene instead of acting like a frigid bitch? They also still speak too quickly - even Joe Morton is having a race for who can put the most words in the least amount of time. Do they do that on SR other series like Grey's? I don't watch it and never want to. Editing to add that Ms Mellie could have left at anytime but she is and was always ruthless in character. She wanted to be first lady so badly that she let a rape pass so that she would have a baby with the future president. Looked good to have a family. Wonder if the 2nd child is Fitz's or grandpa's. Guess they have time to write that story in depending on where the story goes. Of course she never told Fitz nor did she go to the police. Did she even take a paternity test? I still can't stand her and it seriously didn't move me or feel for her. I felt badly for the character but since she let it slide she's still kinda evil.

viewers could fully appreciate the extent of the sacrifice she made for her husband’s political career. Really? She did it for herself if you ask me = not for any other reason.

I never liked Quinn and I still don't get her story - can anyone give it to me in one paragraph?

The mother biting her wrists was just so gross but so obvious since they have used that ploy of going to a hospital or that type of thing on SO many shows already and then they escape.

Hey Icy - our cutie pie now seems to be a series regular and not a guest star! He was on the main credits. We can only hope his role will be expanded and he won't get killed off. I know - I'm still watching but it's so silly. More ridiculous every week. I watched Elementary this week and really enjoyed it. I can never decide which to watch first. Do you like cutie pie too Mariah? I always forget his name. So it's now CP for me.

Hey who played Lisa Kudrow's sister? She looks very familiar to me.

Oh winter finale- it goes off before the Christmas holidays and should come back sometime in Feb or maybe before. They all go on hiatus so build up that DVR. Stinks. If it comes on after Feb that means they'll have a filler show that they are testing.

She doesn't want to be first lady, she really wants to be President, but she settled since it was pretty much impossible.

She's been good in other scenes as well, and she's hardly frigid, she comes on to her husband all the time but he wants to fuck his girlfriend instead.

Shonda really writes some stupid stuff, but she does keep it interesting if bizarre and childish and over the top unlikely.

Kerry Washington is apparently pregnant in real life. I wonder if they will write it in?
