Alright, so here it is. Do you believe the belt/switch/paddle is an effective tool in raising a child? Or is it a barbaric practice that needs outlawed?

I'm with the first. I was raised by the belt, learned to fear the belt, promised in my younger years that my kids would never receive the belt. But, sometime around entering high school I realized that the belt worked while other forms of punishment didn't. I've seen instances in my immediate and extended family where the belt was unused but severely needed or was over utilized and produced a negative effect. I fear that this, along with the "talk about your feelings" movement, means an end to the things that have made life since the dawn of time great. Kids will be overly demanding, over pampered, and soft.

There will be no such thing as beating the bully's ass and taking his lunch money, it will be a trip to the school counselor to discuss how sad that makes you. Not to mention the bully in itself will become what is today's average kid. No such thing as threatening that Santa will give you coal if you don't behave.

That's about all I can think of. Too late to think straight. But, seriously, those are what made me who I am today. I'll always remember standing up for myself, not telling the fuckers they make me sad. Of course, I never really gave a fuck what people said about me anyways.

I never got any of that. My parents didn't believe violence was the equivalent of punishment.
I guess I turned out OK. I'm not a "bad" person.

Some kids, however, ought to be beat.
Before there was ritalin, there was the belt.
It worked for hundreds of years to settle kids down with ADD, it can work for more.

Once again, it's the world becoming too politically correct.
Too politically correct, such that it's becoming a wrong thing.

I got hit a few times when I was a kid, but I was pretty good by nature anyway so it rarely happened. I've turned out alright; I work in emergency services, I wasn't a pretentious, self-indulgent teen who figured I knew everything better than my parents and specifically went against the grain for the hell of it, and I generally stay on the side of order. Actually this entire argument really links in well with traditional vs community policing, and society at large.

But I don't always condone hitting kids. For little kids, it works; it's basic psychology to present the carrot and use the stick when the carrot fails. But hitting them too much can do waaaay more harm than good. It needs to be used sparingly rather than as a default form of punishment.

But that kind of punishment doesn't work for teens, in fact it does the opposite and results in more violence. Teen problems are far deeper than regular kids, and I think the problem comes about because parents can't find an effective way to fight against teens. These days teens are very much separated from the other age groups; you're not an adult, and you're not a kid. You can do plenty of adult things, but you can get treated like a kid. It's a weird area of overlap. The end result? Totally ineffective punishments and a useless justice system. You get treated as a kid with the removal of privilages and threats, but you have copious access to alcohol, money through jobs, cars, and so on. It's a bad mix.

In the old days, you were either a kid or an adult; there was no middle ground. You hit someone else as a kid, and it was a simple brawl and the kids may or may not have got in trouble, depending on if they had it coming. You hit someone as an adult, and it was assault. You hit someone as a teen today, and it means bugger all.

The message being sent is clear: your parents have no control, and the law can't touch you, so go apeshit. While this message hangs around, you can hit, kick, scream and yell as much as you like at the new generation, but it will do nothing.

5 year old avatar B)

I was raised (and still probably being raised) without any form of punishment, really. No limits, either. I was never really given a bedtime, limits to TV or the comp. And so far I'm ok as a parson. So are my 5 other siblings, none of them are screwed up or selfish (except for one, she's just a lazy 22 yr. old bum living in our home with no plans for life).

Still, this method probably wouldn't work for everyone.

i don't really think that violence in general is necessary, there have been studies that show that "kids" (not teens mind you) often have many more issues later on in life, if they are abused. Of course, if he's really going off the deep end (i have a friend named ozzie who's like 13, and is on tons of drugs) it should be ok to slap them around a bit, make sure they know what they're getting into.

Ya, my cousin always got the living hell beat out of him by his dad for no reason. He was a drunk. I wouldn't say he turned out terrible, he's been arrested on bullshit charges and he follows the same lifestyle of hanging out doing nothing I do (other than he's like 25).

Oh, and I'm still waiting.

Yeah I don't really have anything to add, just checking in and saying hi for the day.

I'm going onroad with a few paramedics next week before I finally move into the comms centre. 12 hour shifts, but 4 day work week :)
