if the country goes to shit.
Think ahead.
The country goes to shit.
People begin stealing, killing, and no one is around to stop them.
You've probably shot three people today trying to steal something.
You've been shot at, too.
You broadcast a request for help over the radio.

Who answers?

That's one scenario.
When the world goes to shit, Alliances will need to be made based on resources.
For instance, someone with a shitload of ammunition will engage in trade with someone with food.
Someone with access to fresh water may be the biggest winner.
An underground greenhouse, I believe, would be the ultimate. No one would know you have food. You could eavesdrop the radio signals until something forms and stabilizes.

The second scenario is that we keep a grip on civilization.
Effective vigilante groups hold a firm hand to crime.
Stealing and minor crime is punishable by death, no questions asked.
Leaders will emerge as the political framework is quickly rebuilt, but local to our country. Foreign affairs are for a later time.
Whatever war resources we have are continued to fight overseas to wipe out whoever takes the first hit at us.

I've been thinking about the end of the world a lot.
If America "Goes under", it's in the air who will strike first while we're weakest to retaliate.
China? Russia? An Arabian nation?
Our allies aren't half as powerful as us.
Satellite countries harboring our missiles will annex them.

Essentially, love the United States or hate us, if we go, you all follow suit.

A satphone is only more reliable as long as:
A. the satellites are working properly and can handle the traffic (which, as I've been reading, is only 20-30% of the time for some in recent years)
and
B. you know who the fuck you're going to call that also has a satphone or is overseas

I know morse is better than voice for distance, but I like to get my news fast. That is backup plan A for communications. Plan B is use someone for a relay (anyone seen Convoy? Cross-state CB relays are fun.). Plan C is scrounge up a satphone. And Plan D will be determined when it comes time to cross that bridge.

As for Jkamo's post while I was writing this. I'm aiming for the second scenario. Plan is this:

Gain trust of my town. Ally with nearby town which is kind of connected to ours. Build defenses. Build infrastructure/train troops. Ally with other nearby towns and rebuild their infrastructure and build a joint defense force. Then, pending status of the original government, spread from there.

Oh for sure, if the sats aren't working or contactable, then you're in trouble. But at the same time, your chances of contacting the person and actually having them receive and understand the intelligence with a sat phone is better than shortwave most of the time. A lot of the time shortwave is very noisy and easily messed with, so it's easier to pick out a beep than a voice.

Repeaters are a good idea, they use them extensively here for cross-country communications (usually around 140mhz or in the 400mhz range, VHF and UHF) but the higher frequencies rely more on line of sight than signal skip. Trade off is higher quality audio, great for voice. As for rebroadcasting a shortwave signal; it'd work but again shortwave is pretty susceptible to interference, and you're probably better off just increasing your own transmitter's power rather than relying on another station.

More or less true, to an extent, but with the rising power of the European Union, and Asia, there'll be a new superpower to take control. But removal of the US (or any superpower) would send things backwards for some time. I really don't think we have anything to fear in the way of a major military attack from Arabian nations; unless they all banded together and came under one command (unlikely) and then successfully raised a cohesive army, they wouldn't be able to do anything outside of terrorist attacks. Even a war with China would probably go down to the wire.

Anyway the Middle East will lose most of its importance and power once we leave behind an oil based economy, either by exhausting it or switching to cleaner power.

Oh, by the way, I forgot to mention that I am alive today only by the grace of God, and almost got killed by a speeding car coming in my direction. I was walking across the road to pick something up and waited until the two cars that I saw passed. I continued walking and by chance I looked up, saw the car coming my way, and jumped back before I took another step. The car must have missed me by inches. The span of this happening was less than two seconds. I credit divinity.

Sure, why not? After all, I did have a case recently where somebody said they couldn't turn off their TV. I don't know if nearly getting hit by a car is quite[/u] as serious as such a horrific, traumatic medical condition as not being able to turn off a TV, but I'll see what I can do.

I still don't understand what his problem was. Well, apart from being drunk and having a blister on his toe. He did offer the medics some food though when they got there.

I am now officially prepared for the zombie apocalypse. Today was my birthday. I got a Mossberg 500 w/ rifled and field 12ga barrels (both ported) and a fairly nice scope (The view looks warped to me but fine to my parents). Can't wait to try it out. It was also supposed to include chokes for the field barrel but they weren't in there. Going back to the dealer to get them.

Not unlike this one:
