Now I'm a massive nerd and love a bit of D&D (fuck, I used to board game, paint Citadel/Gamesworkshop figures ... and worse, when I was a kid). But Skyrim just left me colder than a witches tit. I played the main campaign through and completed the Thieves Guild quests and a load of other stuff (so I guess it can't have been *that* bad) but I failed to see what all the fuss was about.

Yeah, I honestly don't know why Skyrim left you cold dude...but then try this on for size, motherfucker:

I actively DON'T like all the D&D shit, but can honestly say that Skyrim along with Fallout are my fave games of all time.

So, maybe not having a love for it is what made it appeal so much? With that in mind, I wonder whether or not Dragon Age Inquisition might appeal to you more than it does me? It kinda *feels* more dice-rolly than Skyrim ever did for me?

I keep threatening to go back to Dragon Age rather than trade it in just cos of the sheer volume of "GOTY" posts I see about it, but just keep getting distracted by GTA V.

Well maybe I was overstating when I said cold. But it didn't capture my imagination like Demon/Dark Souls. When a fantasy world is so detailed like Skyrim it leaves nothing left to the imagination. Dark Souls just gives you tiny bits of suggested back story and you have to fill in some of the blanks (or not if thats your preference) - it just makes it more it more interesting. You can spend ages just connecting info and details of things you find to connect it all together. In Skyrim its all spelt out for you in excruciating and often boring detail. Less is more sometimes. Its like with D&D, you carve the story out for yourself.

In a lot of games having a story handed to you is great - but for fantasy games, I like it Dark Souls stylie.

EDIT - I guess if a story and the universe if interesting then thats cool and there have been games that have sucked me in. I guess just not Skyrim in that sense.

Games are funny fuckers, its really tough to pinpoint what turns you on or not. And why games can be so subjective.

I'm still not sure about Dragon Age, it's like Mass Effect - beautifully imagined worlds, but almost too much going on. I end up just switching off. It's like you walk the path they prescribe, even though it's 'open world'. However in Mass Effect, combat was very satisfying even if the story was a bit meh. If it's a satisfying in Dragon Age it might be worth a look on that basis.

GTA is and always be the exception to my open world aversion!

Good post bumlord...as for for story in Skyrim...MEH! I never read ANY of the books that you found (unless they were the ones that taught you a new spell) and couldn't tell you what the overriding story arc was all about if you held a gun to my head and yet....290+ hours.

Ha ha, fair play ... can't grumble with that!

290+ hours? Holy fucking shit balls - you are kidding?! Mind you, I'm prob about 200+ with Demon Souls, Dark Souls and Dark Souls 2 combined.

ARRRGHHH!!!!

Actually...in all honesty, the only bug I ever experienced in all that time was one of the Dark Brotherhood ones that was well-renowned, and it was sorted with a patch.

Genuinely, and for the amount of sheer time just spent in that world, one of THE best put together games I've ever played.

I love you Skyrim...*sob*

Ah but I had the pantaloons PS3 version.

It is no doubt and impressive achievement. But nothing touches GTA5 - the detail that game is just incredible.

For shizzle my nizzle. Couldn't agree more. It is genuinely breathtaking, and even small bits of it put entire other games to shame.

I will have to try and get online again this week bro.

I had probably the busiest Christmas I can ever remember so gaming time was massively limited.

I'm still working my way through Far Cry 4, and while I'm enjoying it, I'm not sure it's even a good game. Bear with me on this...

The world is great, and the sheer amount of activity is mind-boggling, but I can't shake the fact that the missions have almost no real variation. It's generally drive to point A, take out three waves of bad guys, rinse and repeat. Only the trippy missions offer a real detour and they're fairly rare. It's compelling from a completion perspective, but vanilla in terms of game mechanics.

I know you fuckers generally have a downer on Nintendo, but Captain Toad's Treasure Tracking is an excellent little puzzle game. I blitzed through it in an afternoon/evening with my son and we loved every second. This and Mario 3D World are reason enough to pick up a WiiU imo.

We have a Wii U and I think its a cracking console, even if the menu's are a bit confusing across the TV and control pad screens.

My two (especially my 7 year old) love Mario Kart 8. I've been thinking of getting Super Mario Bros as the kids love it on the 3DS XL. Had seen Captain Toads Treasure - would a 7 year old get anything out of it?

That is if I can remove my son from Skylanders: Trap Team long enough for anyone else to use the Wii U!

Captain Toad is perfect for a 7 year old.

The first few puzzles introduce the concept of rotating the level to uncover the doors and crystals. Once they've figured it out, there'll be no stopping them.

For me, I'm playing it after he's gone to bed trying to ace every level!

Oh and we finally made the break away from Skylanders this Christmas, straight into Disney Infinity Marvel. Sheesh...
