Advance Wars: Dual Strike (DS)

Recommendation from a mate at work - and curse him for doing so, for every (spare) waking moment of the day is spent playing the campaign mode.

This surely must be the most addictive game of all time! I challenge anyone to come up with a game more life consuming than this one! Sofa, lunch break, bog, train etc!

Top, top game. Simple turn based gameplay with basic but functional graphics, but dang, gameplay cranked up to 11!

Really?

I only ask cos I had Advance Wars on the GBA and found it tear-inducing.

Oh...and I'm curious cos I've got a DS now after selling on the PSP. Currently got Super Mario Bros. and Brain Academy with Trauma Center on the way.

I love touch screens....sue me.

Ah well in that case, you won't dig AW: DS as it's near identical by all accounts, I didn't play it on the Advance as I didn't have one. Anyway you must bum dogs, cos it's great and it's like crack fucking cocaine and I'm getting my fix daily. And fortunatley I don't have to raid my mums purse so I can shoot up.

Jesus I talk and incredible amount of shit, must be going nuts waiting for this baby to arrive. 5 days late now. Whoops a bit OT but AW is taking my mind of things!

Finished Mario the other day, top game. If only the Bowser Boss Battles were a bit more taxing.

I'd recommend Phoenix Wright as a great DS game (the first one - the second one isn't as good). Yes it's a port of a GBA game which doesn't make great use of the touch screen (except for the DS specific final chapter), but the story and characters make up for it.

The DS is genius and handheld perfection, unlike the gorgeous but completely ridiculous PSP.

Quick loading, daft and addictive time filler games ahoy. And thats ALL any handheld player really needs when he is taking a shit.

Get your mitts on Nintendo touch golf Indie, its a fucking stylus swinging savoury delight that you can pick up for two farthings.

Touch Golf eh? I had Everybody's Golf on the PSP...might have to check that out...and Phoenix Wright....oh and that new Zelda game's looking quite good - never played a Zelda game so I might have to bust my cherry on that. Games(tm) gave it a 9/10 on import.

Hmmm. Not sure i agree. I keep dipping a toe in trying "great" DS games and they leave me cold or annoyed with the badly implemented touch systems.

Not that i've been using my PSP much either, but certain much more. I think i just find DS games too simplistic and Nintendo relying on its past IP too much. Maybe because i've used touchscreen PDAs for years, or i'm just not the intended market?

Any recommendations for DS games appreciated too...

The DS is an odd one for me. I fall in and out of love with it on a regular basis.

Currently experiencing a total love-in because of the following:

Sega Touch Darts - Great use of the touch screen and an excellent learning curve that eventually has you checking out huge numbers to stay in the match. Only missing commentary from Sid Wadell.

Pokemon Pearl - A hugely under-rated RPG in my opinion. Have enjoyed the first 15 hours but now lacking direction. Not sure if it's my own ineptitude or a design fault.

Elite Beat Agents - I love rhythm games in general and this is right up there with Gitaroo Man. I find myself replaying levels featuring Madonna, The Village People, David Bowie and The Rolling Stones.

I left my DS idle for a long time, but AW has renewed my faith. To be fair the PSP hasn't been played much - Daxter was the only game I finished on that. Loading times, battery life (hand held supposes to be quick and on the go and having to be near a power source and waiting for loading seems to defeat the object in my eyes) and RSI see to it that the PSP stays in my desk draw permenantley now.

The touch screen is perfect for AW and it just works so well. That said I haven't seen too many other games on the DS that make me want to part with any money, so Zelda will most likely be my next purchase. But 4thie, I may very well check out Touch Golf!

There are no 'great' DS games in a modern sense, that is very true but there doesn't need to be. Indie spells it out best, handheld gaming should be quick easy and addictive for a few minutes at a time.

The PSP is a tech marvel but it misses the point, is too powerful for its own good and I personally dont want to be playing games that in many cases should be on a genuine home system where they would look better and you can get comfy and have the time to get into them.

Put it this way, I take my DS to work all the time and when I get a minute I can load up Puzzle Quest, Touch Golf, Zoo Keeper, Meteos etc in a trice, enjoy them and then close up on a moments notice. Not so my mate Chris and his PSP, who has to wait for the thing to bloody load, has far less battery time and most of the time cant really get into the overly complex games.

It only got mostly average-ish reviews but a few of them realised what a gem it is and imo its completely fascinating. Mainly because you have to swing through the ball exactly like in real life and can put draw and fade on it depending on how your swing cuts thru the ball.

Cue a lovely striking sound and then watch your ball travel delightfully over the slightly ugly 3D map. It's superbly satisfying and addictive for me and is probably the purest and most accurate golf sim as far as SWING method goes.

And the new Zelda is deffo on my shopping list.

In the limited time I have these days I've been playing GT HD Concept - wow those cars look real  - still prefer several other game's handling characteristics though. Oh - and because there's bog all to play on the PS3 replaying Shadow Of the Collossus and Ico through - they get a nice makeover and are still better than anything around at the mo.

Like a lot of people after seeing 80-90% scores I was hugely disappointed with Resistance at the start but man - does that game take off after 8 levels or so - in fact I don't think I ever recall a game improving so much from a rather dire start. Really good weapons and some great shootouts - it's top stuff (eventually) and I can't wait to play it through co-op when I have the time.
Subtitles are available on Teletext page 888

Pro Evolution Soccer 3

Bought second hand because I was bored and it was 99p and now taking up every last moment of my gaming time... couldn't believe it when I realised this is the first football game I've owned since ISS64

Currently also trying to avoid all positive talk of Bioshock because I know I wont be able to afford it until it's 99p as well!!

I know what you mean about the PSP being too powerful for its own good - I also found it very uncomfortable to play for any length of time. Also, the response time on the LCD panel really let it down at times - trails galore. Enjoying the DS much more already though I wish it was net-enabled from the get-go rather than me having to fork out for that functionality - anyone doing the net browser super-duper cheap?

I haven't tried it but, by all accounts, the DS browser is really awful to use.
