Drakes Fortune Still lovin' it. Regardless of ole grumpy Bon's comments Crayon Physics Cool little game with a lot of potential, looking forwards to the Deluxe version being released. Which will allow you to draw any shape you like. Portal Bit of co-op play with my 12 year old son. He's pretty good at sussing the puzzles out. I beginning to feel a bit threaten but his gaming ability. When does it turn from kid asking his dad for help to the dad asking his kid for help...? |

Need For Speed Pro Street - 360 - Everything I ever wanted from a racer. A shame then that despite being on the shelves for a couple of months it clearly isn't finished, and deteriorates into a slideshow at times. How the fuck Alpha code can get released in this state, God and EA only knows, it acts like it's a PC game running on too high a detail level whenever you do a powerslide! Shocking. So why am I addicted to it when it makes my eyes hurt? Transformers The Game - 360 - A bit like Mechassault, only instead of the crap on-foot bits it has CRAP driving/flying bits, most of which are so bad that you want to transform ASAP. In fact, it made me want to transform it into the PS2 Transformers game of a couple of years back, I'd forgotten how good that really was until I played this. Stranglehold - 360 - Nope sorry, this is an arcade game, pure and simple. 10 minutes and I've had enough. Disposable but ultimately very playable. Metroid Prime Hunters - DS - great looking for the DS, but just as mindnumbing as the GameCube version was to me:- Scan, shoot, shoot, scan, wander/roll around and try and find the item/exit on the stupid 3D map, fall asleep. A truly yawnsome experience. |

Nothing, mainly but just thought I'd post my thoughts on a coupla demos I played recently: Turok (360) Nothing flash at all - seemed pretty boring. and Conflict: Denied Ops (PS3) Ditto on this; seemed VERY generic and didn't look or move at all well. Maybe CoD4 has spoiled me for other FPS's that don't look like supermodels? |

I actually thought that was a PSP game when I saw the gameplay footage for the first time and the squad commands seem pretty basic. So it is not only you.

No the problem with both those games isnt the graphics, which are serviceable, but poor gameplay. I think i posted about Turok before, but Conflict's switch to first-person is a bad decision IMO - it dosent compete with other FPSs, and what made the Conflict games fun/unique(ish) was the 4-way splitscreen co-op, which has been totally yanked. Another demo i was unimpressed with was Kingdom Under Fire: Circle of Doom, it feels like a Champions of Norrath rip-off, but the way the camera keeps swinging to a fixed angle (al la early Resident Evil / Devil may Cry) and then tries to follow you etc is dire. Leave it be and you cant see whats happening, or fight with it continuously which annoys. Not sure about the full game, but reviews seem to imply it hasnt gotten much better, but it needs a further back follow option. Overall i think Folklore did "next-gen" tunnel button-mashers better, at least from each respective demo. Undertow - the free LIVE game - is very basic, and not recompense for the shit service we've got since Crimbo. MS should have just manned up and let you get any one arcade game free; let people get what they want to obtain maximum positive karma. They can suck my hairy left testicle over that treatment, and at this point in time i doubt i'll be renewing my LIVE sub when it runs out. Burnout Paradise; quite enjoying this. I do doubt the longevity, but hey its fun at the mo. |

Yeah I spent a couple of minutes trying to change to third-person in CDO before I realised it really wasn't there. The Conflict games just seemed to suit it better, first person was for sniping only in our house. If it the full game doesn't have a 4 player split it'll be a real step back, CDS was the first (and thinking about it, maybe still the only) 4 player split screen co-op game we played at any length. I think the graphics are disappointingly flat, but then, the similar Mercenaries 2's didn't impress me either. After Halo 3 and CoD4 I feel that games that look like CDO should run like a greased weasel on the 360. Anyone tried the Frontlines: Fuel of War demo? That's another one that looks a bit rough but plays quite well, especially if you like rocket launchers that lock on to armoured targets and remote gadgets that mean you can hide in a corner and kill people with a Tamiya kit - after that Snake's mini-metal gear doesn't look so exciting anymore... |

Super Mario Galaxy I'm unfashionably late to the party on this but having so much fun with it I don't care. Up to 40 stars and the one aspect that stands out above all other is the level design which is consistently excellent and for a dozen or so levels utter genius. Why is it that only Nintendo can seem to deliver the classic combination of fair challenge, classic level design and tight controls in their platformers? In a market where hype can destroy the experience, this is a game that transcends it. Easily the best game of 2007 (if I'd actually played it last year!) Zak & Wiki I picked this up following a wave of positive noises but also against my better judgement as I don't have the best track record with puzzlers. It looks fantastic considering the limitations of the Wii and the use of the wiimote is as excellent as I'd read. My issue however is that frustration sets in far too quickly for my liking and has me either reaching for the off button or Gamefaqs which isn't the point I guess. It also doesn't help that there isn't really a narrative to follow. Instead each puzzle is a single level to complete in the fastest time possible. I can't recommend the game, but I think that's probably because of my own mental limitations/ taste more than anything. |

I downloaded that a while ago and i'm in two minds about it. The battlefield approach to it is quite fun, taking key areas etc, and the remote helis and tanks are fun, but the main weapon is really pants (sooo much kickback for an assault rifle) and i didn't really like the movement and controls. another problem is that it isn't all that different in premise from battlefield/SW Battlefront games, which have no depth whatsoever and were only really fun online, so i'm not sure how long the SP would last. |

Well, I've been replaying Bioshock at a steady pace as I was writing a paper on it for my MA (ho-hum), and even knowing how things turn out this is still fucking ace on toast. Love the world, love the art, love Andrew Ryan (just a little bit, bastard that he is). Playing lots of CoH: Opposing Fronts too, as I bought it when it first came out and then played it for all of an hour before chucking it back on my shelf in favour of something that wasn't WWII. I've come to my senses and this is a solid enough expansion. I still think that CoH, for all its bluster and action, is just a tad too frenetic at times. Without a pause function that allows you to queue up a few orders it's really easy to get disorganised or recover once things go pear shaped, especially playing as the new German forces where micro-managing is key. It's a blast to be sure, but sometimes I find the whole experience to be a bit overwhelming and annoying. Also, went and purchased a Wii with the girlfriend. She's now addicted to Guitar Hero and I'm shocked by how much I'm enjoying Super Mario Galaxy. |

Call of Duty 4 Not finished the single player yet, but played through the sniper level last night. The SAS one where you have to carry your collegue out after the helicopter crashes. Fuck a duck - what an infuckingcredible level. The graphics are breathtaking - the lighting and shear detail on display were beautiful. One of those moments for me the like the first time I played sonic, or proper 3D in Tomb Raider (my first exposure to it anyway). The market has been flooded with FPS games and the next gen consoles have more than their fair share. So it's a hugley impressive effort when a game that has so much competition can so truely set itself apart and raise the bar. Yes I liked it very much. But no, not to the point I produced some bollock yogurt. EDIT - and any game that can make me release chocolate hostages everytime a dog runs towards me has to be pretty good! |

I've been having a bit of a retro-session; have some holidays i have to use or lose, so dusted off the last-gen consoles. Rez (PS2) - fantastic still. The 360 HD version dosent really add much except you can vibe-yourself easier/cheaper than finding the "trance enhancer". Guitar Hero 1 (PS2) - stands up so well to time, and shows up the latter games for substituting difficulty for fun. The Chikyuu Boueigun 2 (PS2) - another game that shows up the so-called "next-gen", EDF 2017 is fun, but Oh My Diety(s) does CB2 give it a kicking. And surprisingly stuff like the draw-distance is just as good as the 360 ver, ditto loads times, just the textures are (much) worse. BTW dont buy the PAL PS2 game, that was a bad conversion. Tekki / Steel Battalion (Xbox) - yikes i'm getting old. Tekki bent me over and explored my anus thoroughly! I was dying bad on Normal Difficulty, and Novice wasnt easy either. Such a brutal game, but so immersive and the best peripheral eV3r!!!11! Please do a sequel Capcom. Glad i was doing "free mission" and not "die-and-your-save-is -wiped"... Eject - EJECT! Patapon (PSP demo) - my next PSP buy, great concept and excellent little game. Stick it in the same category as Katamari, Pixeljunk Monsters, LocoRoco etc if you liked those, get this! |

I downloaded the PS3 version of the Turok demo and deleted it about 20 minutes later. I think this must be the worst demo every to have found its way onto the PS3 network. I simply cannot understand the logic of using a level that's set underground and therefore in almost continuous darkness to sell a game. Not only was it disorientating but there were also invisible floors that needed to be negotiated to progress. After 20 minutes I had no motivation to carry on and even less to purchase the full game. Way to go guys! |
