Super Smash Bros Brawl - and it's bloody great! I don't normally play beat-em-ups at all - mainly because I am shit at them But I have always liked this series, probably because a bit like Tekken, you can button mash and look good
It really is a Nintendo fans wet dream and more besides. There is pretty much every well known character to have graced a Nintendo game and then some. With, of course, guest stars such as Sonic and Solid Snake. I have mainly been playing adventure mode at the moment. Probably why I like this series, is because you can play this mode and basically be working toward a goal and seeing new things as you go. The backgrounds are quite basic, but the cutscenes and fighting - not to mention the odd partnerships the game throws your way, makes this the most interesting part of the game in my case. I haven't dabbled in the online modes yet, probably because I don't want to get beaten by a 10 year old American - although I guess lack of voice chat means I avoid hearing call me an "asshole english guy with bad teeth" afterwards There are challenge modes, a mini shoot-em-up, trophies to collect, stickers to collect which you can use to boost your fighters stats, just so much to see and do. Well, yeah, I like it - a lot! |

Star Wars KOTOR As there is a bit of a lull in releases at the moment, I have been going back to some games I missed first time round. I enjoyed the original three films when they came out but was never a Star Wars fanboy, so I was unsure how I would get on with this game. Happily I am really liking it so far, it really is Bioware at the top of their game. Not only is the story telling great but the sense of scale is massive. This will defiantly keep me occupied till my next purchase. |

ElitePPC I've revived my iPAQ 2210 as a DAP (with 16GB CF for £35 on ebay) and occasional games machine - this (in beta since 2003-ish) is great fun, totally mirroring (and in a lot of ways exceeding) my memories of playing the original on the Spectrum aaaaaages ago. Oh, that and jawbreaker which comes as part of Windows Mobile 2003 - 2F addictive by far. |

Lost Odyssey (360) I love and hate this sort of RPG guff in giant equal measures and this installment is a pretty standard Final Fantasy type adventure so far. I do like the magical steampunk styled world and I thought the intro battle movie was tremendous. Now admittedly I am not that far in but I am already getting pissed off with the constant loadscreens whenever I walk only a few yards. When you couple this with chunks of storyline and text it really grates on my patience. Nice looking game though and one I will probably play in snatches over the next six months to satisfy my lust for adventure. No chance of trading it in anyway, the 360 has already noisily chewed a band on the edge of disc 1 although it still works miraculously. New Super Mario Bros (DS) Late to the party on this. Encapsulates everthing that is great and shite about Nintendo. Great as in it has that inch perfect quality control, visual design and playability of Ninties flagship franchises. Shite in that I have played the almost exact same game with the same characters and largely the same mechanics a hundred times before on the Snes, N64, Gameboy etc etc. Still, its games like this and Zelda that remind me that I really can live without a Wii, despite being the only person in the world still without one  |

I'm also playing through this (I'm near the end of disc 1). I don't normally like JRPGs (gave up on FFX after only a few hours) because of the random battles, overly hard boss battles and the tortuous storylines, but I saw a review of this on Gamer TV and thought the story sounded interesting. I'm enjoying it so far, although the loading screens and random battles every two steps can be annoying. But I love the scale of the thing and the text based dream sequences are a nice touch. One of them caused a tear in my eye (what a wuss! ). The soundtrack is exquisite. I'm not sure if I'll make it through all 40 hours of gameplay, but I really want to, so that's a plus. |

Viking: Battle for Asgard Now maybe I am turning into a fruit sucking loon but I am really enjoying this. Possibly more so than any game of 08 so far. Its got a crap storyline, your character has..... well, no character and it has a sort of unfinished sheen about it. But I am finding it as addictive as hell. Its basically God of War mixed with Dynasty Warriors and set in an open explorable world that looks like Oblivion but with Burnout Paradises colour palette. Its superbly gory with some beheading and eviscerating moves similar to Conans. But what really gets me is that you can climb and explore buildings and caves. You can collect treasure. You can go where you please and tackle which mission you want. You can free fellow Vikings and get them to fight alongside you. You can summon dragons to conduct an aerial assault. You can wade into what seems like hundreds of men in some large pitched battles similar to Heavenly Swords! You can stare at a mesmerising jelly wobble sea as you walk along the coast! Its really a remarkably ambitious arcade style game that is easy to play, a bit repetitive but for some reason is extremely satisfying to this gamer. Some people are happy to button mash against multi foes on a battlefield and that it. This does a whole lot more and is where Koei should have gone years ago. Now get me the men in white coats......... |

I've bought this as well and if I ever get out of the office I intend to play it. I don't mind simplistic as long as it is atmospheric which apparently it is. Also going to pick up Dark Sector on Friday for the same reason. Opti |

Jeez, I haven't even opened mine yet after so many "mehs" from mates who are playing it. Another wise pre-order <_< Jumper: Griffin's Story - 360 - Simply the worst 360 game I've played. It's almost worth buying or renting just to appreciate how good some other games are. I reviewed it so no one else had to, I hope you fuckers appreciate the sacrifice. The Spiderwick Chronicles - 360 - Simple, inoffensive American take on a theme that's similar to lots of other magical tales of the past. Enjoyable, simple search 'n fight gameplay, and it's a rare game that gives you the ever-pleasing ability to knock the snot out of a goblin with a baseball bat. Army of Two - 360 - Still enjoying this, I'm now in China on Pro, want to get all those weapons pimped. It's just a shame you can't play inter-region, EA should be ashamed of themselves. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - 360 - Bought this cheap and that's probably just as well. An impressively large and good-looking Hogwarts can't stop this from feeling a bit claustophobic, as there's no quidditch or broom flying other than a quick on-rails bit when you play as the ginge twins. Too much too-ing and fro-ing for my liking, and gets tiresome quickly, even with all the shortcuts. And Hermione needs a good seeing-to, maybe that'd shut her up. Neves - DS - Simple and addictive as hell, it's a shape puzzler in which you have to fit the same seven pieces together into a template that resembles something or another (vaguely). Either with a time limit, or limited to seven turns, or with no time limit at all. You can rotate them and flip them (it reminds me of that brilliant sub-game in good old Impossible Mission). Gran Turismo 5 Prologue - PS3 - Maybe I've just played too many driving games but this left me colder than a witches tit. Simply the best-looking cars, colours and lighting out there, but the same old clunky menus and awful menu music and... FFS THAT tyre screeching! Even a mild understeer is met with a sound not unlike when I tread on the cat's tail, x100. Nice engine sounds (dunno what someone was complaining about, they're the best GT engine samples ever), but this clinical presentation and overall flow of gameplay has got to change if GT is ever gonna evolve - this is just another GT/Forza/Gotham-alike. Even bloody NFS Pro Street was more appealing in terms of presentation, and it makes you realise just how close the hugely underrated Test Drive Unlimited got to nailing it. Oh, and I miss my rumble Sony. Everybody's Golf World Tour - PS3 - A simply brilliant game, but the super-deformed characters are just too much of a turn off to many that this'll never be the hit it deserves to be. Maybe they should do a version with different player models, as the physics, control system and scenery are easily good enough to make a serious sim - it's WAY better than Mr Woods' last few outings. And when are the dumbasses that make golf games ever gonna realise that you need to be able to save a game at the end of a hole? we can't all devote the time required to finish some of those lengthy tournies, and being able to play a quick few holes now and then would make this a great 'pick up 'n play' game. Lost Planet: Extreme Condition - 360 - Bought this with Harry Potter in a charity shop, decided I wanted it after seeing the recent PS3 release, and thought maybe I did miss out on something special after all. Well, apart from the painful cutscenes and laughable character names (Wayne & Bandero to name but two FFS) it's not bad at all. Hugely impressive at first, you soon realise that the explosions look pretty much all the same, and when in a VS (mech), what initially felt like realistic weight and mass soon becomes a sluggish pain in the ass of a gameplay feature. These things move even slower than Steel Batallion's monsters, and are more easily stunned than a day-old kitten. If they wanted to make it so damn simmy, why no first person view? The anchor (grappling hook) could have been a much more fun game tool as well. Annoying aim assist (turn it OFF) and default control setup (you can alter it to resemble something like Gears etc). Entertaining till the end though, and (shock-horror) it's a Capcom game with some boss fights that didn't make me want to kill the designers! |

I'm starting to get cheesed off with this now. I'm on a bit where you have to dodge a sequence of falling rocks on some stairs but there's no margin for error and my character has a habit of getting stuck on the scenery. If you fail, all your characters lose 100 health points and fall into a hole where there's usually a nasty random battle before you can get back up to where you were and try again. |

I'm playing both Dark Sector and Condemned 2 on my spanky new Elite - I'm playing em simultaneously as I only get 2 disks at home at a time with Love Film and I wanna get them done so I can get some Blu Rays through. I will leave the rant about the farce of trying to trade in my old 360 for later..... |
