Never even got that too. Fairly miserably to find weapons on the first few levels so was under armed on one of the boss battles and gave up. |
Insert Coin.

You only needed the tranq pistol for the whole game? Well, i guess you needed the RPG, but they gave you ammo as needed for those bits. Seriously, the other weapons were all bonus bits if you wanted to go gung-ho. |

MGS4 is pretty much spot on for me. It has the convoluted story and the long cut scenes but it looks great and it's worth playing just to see all the little touches Kojima has implemented. I'm on to the second act already so I can see me finishing it soon. My only major gripe is that whilst improved, the controls are still too fiddly. They could've made them so much more user friendly! Definitely one for the fans. If you didn't like the other ones, I doubt you'll like this one. |

No MGS4 thread?
Finished it last night - i thought i was near the end about midnight, so pushed on. But it took a bit longer, then there was a bunch of exposition cutscenes and stuff and i didnt crawl into bed till 0330! Opps  So how do i rate MGS4? It's odd because some stuff in fantastic, literally no-one else does stuff like Kojima. Then there are the bits which seem indulgent; over-long cutscenes that could be edited and trimmed down while still giving the same info imparted, cameos of past characters that didnt really need to be there, and the stuff to do with Raiden seems more because Kojima was annoyed fans didnt love all aspects of MGS2 and was beating them saying "you're wrong, look how cool Raiden is!". There there are issues with logic and location. I think games which focus on just one area it can be accepted that there's no backup, and it's one man vs an army. When you have world-saving stuff going on, but not the same time pressures and you're moving around the globe, why cant you get backup and have all the support and extra help turn up? MGS4 does partly explain away some of this, but as a whole it feels a bit contrived, whereas MGS1, 2 and 3 were in a discrete location and seemed far more plausible that you were on a solo sneaking mission. Similarly characters dont always seem to act consistent with their given internal logic, and theres that annoying lets stand about pre-battle, during battle and post battle giving a monologue - yet we have this massive time pressure and we know enemy are about to break in and kill us. Certainly i think some of the cutscenes could have been updated and split between classic "FMV"s and in-game dialogue as you're progressing about. Even if the player wasnt doing anything important, you have given the illusion of control back, but you can monologue at them while their searching lockers or something. Overall the story just didnt grab me as much as MGS1/2/3, and i still hold MGS1 as the best of the series (oh how i'd love it redone with MGS4 engine and control features) for total immersion, breaking the fourth wall and generally being as solid a game as one could wish for. Other quibbles are the controls, lack of customisation - there's not even a music volume adjustment?! Invisible walls / lack of movement options for Snake (re: cant climb certain boxes, piles of rubble etc), respawning enemy and the load/install times. These are fairly minor though, and i can glance past those. Saying all that... i did really enjoy it. The sound is fantastic, the story is still involving and the hybrid stealth / shooter gameplay works well as long as you take it for what it is. Not many games actually engage my emotions, but MGS games do seem to provoke genuine reactions above the normal anger/adrenaline/frustration. Some of the graphics are exceptional, and its nice to have a game with more than 4 enemies on the screen at once. Maybe one is just more harsh when it's the end of a series you liked in the past and it's often easier to criticise than praise. MGS4 is almost unique in that so few developers seem to pour their heart into a project and dont compromise, and having a game (despite it's flaws) stand up and be different from the herd should be encouraged. Yes not everyone may like a certain genre or have access to the hardware needed, but some games deserve to be played if you consider yourself a gamer in any sense of the word, and for me MGS4 is a fitting end to the Metal Gear series and ranks alongside the likes of ICO and Tekki (Steel Battalion). |

Well I've finished GTA (main story) and find myself in something of a gaming lull. Yes I can go and shoot all the flying rats and sub missions in GTA and go back and play COD4 online, but looking for something new. So short of cracking one out to some of the tennis honeys, can any of you chaps recommend a game on the 360 or Wii to occupy my time? Up for anything other than driving games. Cheers

Lost Odyssey? Heaps of game there if you liked the FF games. and it's dirt cheap now. I enjoyed Mass Effect quite a bit despite the exploration sub-quests got a little tired and that's also dirt cheap now. |

I'd say Lost Odyssey, even if you didn't like the FF Games. The story is fabulous, especially in disc 3 when SPOILER.... Your party gets split up and there are several story threads amongst the overall political situation in the game world |

Well, apart from Lost Odyssey (45 hours and counting - the longest I've ever spent on one game), I've been playing a bit of: Super Smash Brothers Brawl I have no idea why I bought, let alone preordered this because: a ) I played SSB Melee literally for 2 minutes before I decided it was a load of crap and switched it off and b ) it's primarily a multiplayer game and I have no local friends who are into games Still, I've got it and I've given it a go. And I could see it would be a lot of fun with friends if... and only if... I could understand the controls. I hate reading manuals and, typically, there's no tutorial in the game itself. Consequently, I have no idea why pressing "A" sometimes unleashes a missile and sometimes does something completely different.. and never seems to do what I hope it will do in a given situation. I also have no idea why characters sometimes bounce off scenery and sometimes just pass through it. My first game last night was just a lot of jumping about trying to keep up with what was going on (and failing) and button mashing. I'll give it another go today but I think this will be one of the few games I'll be trading in. |

I'm about 12 hours in and past the first disc, but I can't help but feel like there's less going on than in FF7? by the end of the first disc in that I'd done LOADS. I think the timer for the game is a little skewed, as an hour in game seems longer than a real hour-i've got a clock above my telly so i'm going to time it tonight. Really enjoying it though, now i've got more than three people and the story's kicked up a notch. |

One tip: SPOILER When you are able to, go to Numara Atoll - you have to find it by cruising round the landing points near Numara. You can level up your characters to level 50 (or more if you have the patience) by fighting the silver Keololon-thingies (don't bother fighting the hellfish things). You need the gamble spell (this is the only thing that will harm them), casting support skill (so that you can cast the spell before the creatures run away) and turn tail (so you can run away from battles with the hellfish). Winning one battle will level up your characters by one level. |

Been playing: UEFA EURO 2008 (360, meh) The Incredible Hulk (360, meh) Sea Life Safari (360, awwww, chill, meh) Started MGS4 (PS3, wow, meh + WTF?) And the Battlefield Bad Company demo several times (360 + PS3). I think I'll have to get it, there's enough good noises coming from friends and I liked the demo despite some odd FPS moments and teeeeeeeeeeerrible tearing. |

Zai-yeah, I went there as soon as I got the boat, the little buggers ran off and the fish kicked my arse! Armed with tactics I think i'll head back there at some point. Bon-I really enjoyed the Bad Company demo, but only the MP part-I couldn't get into the Sp stuff, just didn't feel right to me. |

I finished Metal Gear Solid 4 the other night (where THE FUCK is the thread for it here, huh, HUH?). Anyway, my thoughts in a non-spoiler bullet point way. The Good. + Superb new gameplay elements that kick the shit (yet again) out of every other stealth game. Octocamo, Mk II, and Solid Eye are all fantastic additions to an already very solid (ha ha) stealth game. There has been a massive improvement in the controls too, and I think that whilst its not perhaps as immediately accessible like some games, it controls and plays extremely well after playing with it for a half hour or so. CQC is back and works beautifully. + Being able to play the game how you like is awesome, and if you want to go in guns blazing you can, and you don't get infinite Alerts with constantly respawning enemies. If you do get alerting and are going stealthly through an area, its not game over like it used to be; there are lots of options now which you can choose to do (including hiding in the classic box if you want to). + The levels have some nicely designed alternate routes now. They are still linear of course, but you aren't forced down a set route anymore. There are also some amazing areas that you play through in the game, and without ruining the game for people, you'll be shitting yourself with what the game presents you with later on. + The game rains secrets, extras, easter eggs and in-jokes like they're going out of fashion. It's great to play a game which doesn't take itself too seriously (whilst still taking itself seriously if you know what I mean). The not so good. - Although the bosses were great, I thought MGS3 had more interesting ones. HOWEVER.. There are some ace surprises in there which will make you smile, and again they are industry leading boss fights which makes everything else look shit. - The end was a slight disappointment, and I wish they had gone with the original ending and not what Konami marketing forced on them (that unfortunetly is what happened) - Whilst the game is graphically outstanding, and quite possibly (maybe) the best looking videogame ever (from an art point of view, at least), its a shame that they couldn't keep it locked to 60 frames per second. When it runs at 60 it looks insane, its just a shame it dips around. Overall I absolutely loved this, and have started going back through it going for a 0 kills and 0 Alerts method of play. The quality of the game is so high, and everything about it is super highly polished that anything else is just a bit LOL in comparison. There are no bugs, or graphical glitches, it plays really well, the environments, weapons, characters, bosses and controls are all superb , and it looks and sounds outstanding. Best game of the generation for me so far. |
