Sorry Juz, old reply to Fallout comment-I was talking about how pointless it was wandering around the world after you'd got enough stuff/guns/money. Yes, some of the new areas revealed stories but most were just treasure caches and if you did the story ones first, like I mostly did, it got pretty boring. And re: nonlinearity I kinda go the other way-if i've played loads of open world games it makes a nice change for me to jump into something with a tight, fast-paced story that sucks me in. That's if its done well, that is. |

Gotcha on the Fallout 3 point....and you must be right because, since finishing it (the story) and having a near-end-game save that I could go back to for exploration, I haven't done...and that pisses me off - I love that game ![]() And, yeah, I used to be totally with you on the whole "play a sandbox/play a linear" game thang; there used to be nothing better for me than to go back to a story-led game affter doing whatever the fuck I pleased...I think that happened with Bioshock, but what open-world game would I have been playing before I played that? Cannae remember! Yeah, I guess if it's done really well then I could be lured back to that whole linear thing, but Gears of War 2 and Resistance 2 ain't done it for me. EDIT: May have remembered - I think it was Crackdown (LOVE that game!!) that I played for ages before playing Bioshock (LOVE that game, also). Edited by Juz, Mar 8 2009, 11:19 AM.

I've spent the last week playing Resident Evil 5 on PS3 and I think I like it. I've had a love/hate relationship with the series over the years. I loved the concept, the scares and atmosphere but found the puzzle solving a real chore and the challenge too steep for my feeble skillz. It seems Capcom were listening to me, because this Resident Evil has no puzzles, and is a piece of piss to complete due to ample ammo and bosses who virtually tell you how to expoit their weak spots. Oddly it reminds me very much of Gears of War. It's a pure action game with great graphics and cheesy dialogue. Probably one to avoid if you were hoping for traditional Resi. |

You had ample ammo? Bleedin eck me and a mate were struggling for ammo and i think i had 2 rounds left when we defeated the last boss! I enjoyed every minute of Resi 5, its a gorgeous game and has some great moments. Recently i've been trying to complete a few games from the back end of last year while playing the new games. I completed Banjo Nuts n Boltz which i really enjoyed and think its great. Now ploughing through Midnight Club LA. Playing a little Dead Space Completed 50 Cent and Halo Wars both good. Still playing Killzone 2, multiplayer is great and is getting pretty crazy now people are unlocking abilities. Picked up Madworld and GTA Chinatown Wars the other day, both seem really good especialy GTA Edited by SteMacD, Mar 22 2009, 08:10 PM.

Finally completed Farcry 2 the other day. Got into things quite nicely by the second map area but you lose track of who's who pretty quickly and when they throw a bunch of names at you it means nothing. Whilst avoiding spoilers it gets completely ridiculous by the end and you don't really care who kills who and who ends up on top. The jackal changes from the enigmatic Kurtz character to a whiney bandit who just wants to sit around crying all day... Liked the explosions but if I wanted to be preached to about Africa in a condescending way then I'll watch Blood Diamond thanks. also completeddawn of war 2 a couple of weeks back. Very different to the original DoW as it's squad/character-based strategy rather than resource based. Not sure how I think about it. Will have a think before I finish the review. |

I too found RE5 rather simple and easy although my first play through was on normal Never ran out of ammo (a suprise see as the stupid fucking AI put most of the bullets in my back) and played the majotity of game switching between shotgun and machine gun with shiva only ever using the pistol Its great though to unlock the unlimited ammo modes and just go mental Fun game though but would have prefered it to have been a solo affair rather than the shoddy AI (I still have almost zero interest in online gaming, like extras on DVDs its just something I can not be arsed with) |

Yeah, it's a shame when they force you to have a co-op buddy, especially in games where you didn't really need one at all-like Red Alert 3 had one ffs! Worst is online co-op with no split-screen. Don't see why they can't just make a really good solo experience once in a while |

Couldn't agree more, but it's obvious that co-op is the new stealth of however many years back innit? Speaking of sublime solo experiences (pass the kleenex), I've gone back to Fallout 3 to carry on exploring and doing more side quests....and it's great to be back - this game has absolutely NO online/co-op elements (well, you can recruit associates, but I had one [Dogmeat] who died after about 10 minutes, and I just prefer the whole "lone person" thing in this type of game) and is just all about YOU and YOUR experience. Rapidly moving into my top 3 of all time. I may head back to Far Cry 2 at some point (its still on the 360's HDD), but, man it felt chore-some! Edited by Juz, Mar 24 2009, 08:17 AM.

Well 'The Pitt' came out then vanished today so thats a perfect excuse to head back to Fallout 3. Me i'm waiting untill the DLC comes out to increase the level cap, i'm sure it'll be better to play through the half of the game i have left, Operation Anchorage, The Pitt annnnndd the Broken Steel DLC being able to level. I'll be heading back to Far Cry as soon as i've done Midnight Club and Dead Space |

Managed to blag 3 more free months from Love Film so I got.... Dead Space Started off disliking it, then started really enjoying it, and then ended up fucking hating it and sending it back before the end. I really don't enjoy having to replay certain sections over and over again, especially when I'm doing so because: 1. There isn't enough ammo/health/currency and the restarted bit restarts me minus some stuff that I used up on the first attempt or 2. I haven't completed a certain bit in EXACTLY the way the developers wanted me to - ie a "pattern" boss battle or 3. The game throws a fucking shitload of baddies at me, then lets me limp through that bit due to the lack of ammo and THEN throws a shitload MORE baddies at me straight afterwards. Or, in Dead Space's case - all of the above. So, off that goes back to Love Film as I can't redo bits at a lesser difficulty - I'd have to restart the whole lot. FEAR 2 Generic so far, but moves and feels decent enough - will report more when I've done more. oh and... The Lost and Damned Only done a wee bit so far but...AWESOME! Dude, I hear what you're saying but I thought that game fooking rocked so much those minor niggles didn't even begin to be a problem for me. That was for me the best game I have played in years, since RE4 in fact. So have to disagree with you on that one, it was polished in every dept for my money and was one of the few games that really immersed me since I can't remember when. |

And that's almost exactly how it should be described: "Resi in Space".....or Event Horizon: The Game. It was as restrictive as Resi... |

I ended up really annoyed with Dead Space too, which was a shame since it started off like a 9/10 game and just went downhill from there. I wasted a lot of ammo on bosses until i figured out what they wanted me to do exactly. That meant I was penny-pinching all the way through and spent half the time struggling with the pistol because I would need the better guns later. And the fucking melee was shite. Maybe I'm getting more and more cynical as I get on but I never think pretty glaring problems are excusable anymore and just as I start to get emotionally immersed into a game the various niggles pull me straight out again. Except for Bioshock and to a lesser extent Fallout 3 Edited by crazypunk, Mar 30 2009, 10:02 AM.

Couldn't agree more - games can offer a challenge, sure, but when things just feel artificially weighted JUST to make something more difficult than necessary it just fucks the whole thing. I still say that we must be at a stage where all games should be able to detect if you've replayed something a certain amount of times and then DO something about it (dump some more ammo/health, lower the difficulty...obviously offer the help first). I think you would be thinking about Left 4 Dead, dear sir Works well in that, maybe it'll set the bar for things in the future, as long as devs don't assume the concept is meant to be kept to arcadey games like that. Do you what's really annoying and I thought they'd gotten rid of it by now? Games with no difficulty level whatsoever-usually story-based games and too damn easy on their one setting. CoD4 was great fun but I had to settle to take the easy way through as the hardest setting was arbitrarily hard-you'd be hiding behind cover and 100 player-seeking grenades would land right on your bonce. Bastards. Edited by crazypunk, Mar 30 2009, 10:34 AM.
