Dead Space

Started off disliking it, then started really enjoying it, and then ended up fucking hating it and sending it back before the end.

I really don't enjoy having to replay certain sections over and over again, especially when I'm doing so because:

1. There isn't enough ammo/health/currency and the restarted bit restarts me minus some stuff that I used up on the first attempt or

2. I haven't completed a certain bit in EXACTLY the way the developers wanted me to - ie a "pattern" boss battle or

3. The game throws a fucking shitload of baddies at me, then lets me limp through that bit due to the lack of ammo and THEN throws a shitload MORE baddies at me straight afterwards.

Or, in Dead Space's case - all of the above.

So, off that goes back to Love Film as I can't redo bits at a lesser difficulty - I'd have to restart the whole lot.

Dude, I hear what you're saying but I thought that game fooking rocked so much those minor niggles didn't even begin to be a problem for me. That was for me the best game I have played in years, since RE4 in fact.

So have to disagree with you on that one, it was polished in every dept for my money and was one of the few games that really immersed me since I can't remember when.
And that's almost exactly how it should be described: "Resi in Space".....or Event Horizon: The Game.

It was as restrictive as Resi...
I ended up really annoyed with Dead Space too, which was a shame since it started off like a 9/10 game and just went downhill from there. I wasted a lot of ammo on bosses until i figured out what they wanted me to do exactly. That meant I was penny-pinching all the way through and spent half the time struggling with the pistol because I would need the better guns later. And the fucking melee was shite.

Maybe I'm getting more and more cynical as I get on but I never think pretty glaring problems are excusable anymore and just as I start to get emotionally immersed into a game the various niggles pull me straight out again. Except for Bioshock and to a lesser extent Fallout 3
Couldn't agree more - games can offer a challenge, sure, but when things just feel artificially weighted JUST to make something more difficult than necessary it just fucks the whole thing.

I still say that we must be at a stage where all games should be able to detect if you've replayed something a certain amount of times and then DO something about it (dump some more ammo/health, lower the difficulty...obviously offer the help first).

.....and 100 player-seeking grenades would land right on your bonce. Bastards.
Oooh that's reminded me (turning into rant thread - sorry):

Why is it, when you're supposed to be part of an ongoing war and/or part of a squad only YOU receives that awesome sense of sight and aggressiveness from the AI in some games??? Hold on, I'm supposed to just be another everyman (or if I'm not, not obviously something to be targetted specifically) so way to destroy the immersion by having the enemy ignore everyone around me!

Due to the fact that my 360 is being "repaired" in the land of "SCHNELL! SCHNELL!" I've been having to use the PS3, with some help from my Love Film account:

Midnight Club: LA

Horrible.

Looks horrible, handles horrible, cut scenes horrible, and whole "homie aiiiiiight" shit is horrible.

Little Big Planet

I still can't believe how excited I was for ages for this game, and how really un-appealing it ended up being to me. Went back to "finish" it, and I'm still not sure if I have or haven't.

Burnout Paradise

The only shining star in my PS3 replaying sessions - am steaming through it, getting all the car variations and stuff - won't be paying for any of the new DLC though!

You could've played with your Wii!

Actually, I haven't played on my 360 for ages - I've been spreading my time between LittleBigPlanet; Killzone 2; Zack and Wiki and Madworld - oh, and the Fat Princess beta.

Little King Story on the Wii - one of the best games I have played so far this year. It really is amazing. It is just a shame that on a 1080p TV, the Wii looks like you have cataracts.

I'm planning to start on Little King's Story today. I'm trying to stick to playing only one story-based game on each format at a time but I'm going to make an exception for this.

Well, I'm actually playing and *gasp* enjoying:

Metal Gear Solid 4

Granted, it's a SHIT game for trying to play in quick bursts as the "Hold on dear, just gotta wait for this cutscene to end" bullshit kinda gets in the way of that, but apart from that I think it's pretty decent.

I'm only just now starting Act II, so I guess it could go downhill from here, but I'm gonna keep my hopes high.

Fallout 3

Going back to this cos I think it might just be my most favouritest game ever - still got LOADS of places to find and loads of quests to do despite putting in 60+ hours AND "finishing" it.

Have you seen the new DLC for Fallout? Cap upped to lv30 and the game doesn't just 'end' anymore. And loads of new, double-hard nasties to fight. Looks like it might be finally worth the money...

Haven't got loads of cash at the mo, and there's not a lot out so I've been getting older games off ebay and running through them when I get space inbetween revision.

Currently playing Crackdown. I didn't enjoy the demo ages ago, but really enjoyed the first few hours. Now I've taken down the guys on the first island I'm wondering if it's actually got anymore depth in it. Still, got it along with GoW2 and R6: Vegas for £22 so can't complain!

Played the Red Faction: Guerrilla demo t'other day and I'm not really sure about it. Premise (open-world etc) sounds pretty good and blowing stuff up is fun, but there's not much else to it and even with sneaking it quickly degenerates into an arcade shootfest that feels hollow. That on-rails bit at the end was ridiculous as well (on-rails sections are a pet hate of mine, along with shitty tacked-on boss battles). Comes out a couple of days after my exams so we'll see...

No, there really isn't any more depth to Crackdown; it's designed for people like me who just want to:

"Kill, kill, shoot, shoot, blow-up, blow-up"

As for Fallout 3 - yeah, I saw the DLC, but I'm skintus too so am not bothering...I may see if I can hire the DLC through Love Film at some point.....

And I, too felt the same way about Red Faction - should be of interest, but didn't quite manage it!

On rails sucks!!!

You cant say you didn't enjoy the amount of destruction once you stepped inside that walker.

Well yeah, but most of it was accidental-I was just bumping into stuff and it fell apart like crepe paper. It was a bit silly at the whole arm-swinging thing just felt really clunky and pants. Already have most of my current game collection for mindless open-world sandbox explodey-ness that's a little bit broken. Don't need to pay full price for another one thanks.

Yeah - the feeling of "crashing" into stuff just wasn't there in Red Faction, was it? The bloody thing DID just walk through buildings like they were made of crepe paper.

I have a strong feeling that we'll see this going for ~£20 before too long, and then I'll jump on it like stink on shit.

Possibly.

Luckily, being skint makes you a lot more patient, doesn't it?

That pretty much sums up my game buying over the past 12 months.

I couldn't seriously consider parting £30-40 for a game.

I've recently picked up Saint Row 2 for £10 new (really good value) and the latest Prince of Persia for £9 new (not so great value). I also rented Kilzone 2 and Resi 5 rather than buying which I think was a wise decision given the scandalously short campaign modes of both.

I see HMV have Dead Space for £15 but some of the comments on here have put me off.
