Metroid Prime Hunters - DS

Only a few years late on this one! Thought I'd fire up the DS as I'm staying with the out laws while my house is being rewired. Have to say it's fooking good! Controls are slick and for a FPS on a ickle little screen in actually works really well!

Must be out of touch on the DS or getting old, but serious hand cramps playing that game though!

Really looking forward to the new DS Zelda game, loved Phantom Hour Glass.

And if I may say so, what a charming smashing blouse you've got on

yeah I was gonna review that, but gave it up as I had the same problem - wankers' cramp?

Been playing;

Vinny Riddick's Dark Athena Sneaky-fest (or whatever it was called) - good but too much sneaking. I'm officially all sneaked out now. Love the dark though.

Terminator Salvation - ok for a movie tie-in I spose, incredibly repetitive and rather easy. Co-op saves it from awfulness, but amazingly split screen only.

Red Faction Guerrilla - Am finishing up my belated review of this right now. The game starts well, tailed off a bit and then takes of again - twice. A good story, a great game engine and plenty of variation. Have only scratched the surface of the multiplayer mode as I think I might get addicted - it's really good and 4 hours flew by in one session - I don't recall that happening since Halo 3.

And yay, GAME have just informed me that my copy of Prototype is on the way. Hope it's more fun than the similarly-themed inFAMOUS was.

Wha???

OK, so InFamous is nowhere near the pure joy that Crackdown was, but it's still a whizzo wheeze, no?

Nah, got too repetitive and samey for me too quickly. And I couldn't get my head round the fact that climbing up a building like some dithering cripple was the only way I was ever gonna be able to do it either. I've seen the game played with the complete set of powers and you can summon up a lightning storm and fly, but the same legs that absorb the shock of falling from a high building don't allow you to jump long distances, or even scamper up the side of a building like Spider Man? Ghey m8, GHEY.

I done a boss the other night that took me close on half an hour to kill and then had to escape.... its safe to say that was my only bit of DS'ing for the night as my hand was fkin killin!

Hmmm... Not sure about Prototype - Although Alex feels morer superer in the first 30 seconds than Infamous's Cole does at the end of the game, it's really just "The Incredible Hoodie", with added gore. My level of control over the incredible Alex is tenuous at best, and I find his tendency to do what he wants rather than what I want him to do ghey, even gheyer than Infamous. It's Spider Man meets the Hulk, in a hoody. If this don't improve it's back to RFG, or even Infamous for me I reckon.

You know damn well it's Shirley. And ProtofamousHulk gets better, I've enjoyed using some new powers and learning to nick a Bradley fighting vehicle. Running over innocent civilians and shootin's n' squishing cars is fun, it's just like being in the US Marines. :coolspot:

Yeah, ProtoCrackFamousHulk really IS an astonishingly empowering game, isn't it?

But....as much as I'm really enjoying this and really enjoyed InFamous, Crackdown is (possibly) still the very best of them all, a fair old while down the line.

I'm enjoying Prototype apart from the silly, non-plot related side-challenges; at least Infamous' ones were really entertaining - your opinion, Shirley?

Yep, and I never did play that corking game enough, especially in co-op, there were too many other things around at the time, including the Halo 3 beta that I actually bought it for. Might have to pick it up again, especially now you can get it for pennies.

Much of a muchness I reckon, these games always seem to have to have them ever since the first Spider Man game. Infamous's dead drops are like Proto's million landmarks, Infamous's antenna races are like the checkpoint races in Proto. Infamous's "find the thingy by studying the picture" were fun though, a nice bit of imagination. And although Prototype's New York is monstrous compared to Infamous's Empire City, I think in the main Infamous was the better looking game, despite having really bad pop-up that it did nothing to hide. I think Infamous might just have the edge, it was a cleverer, more considered game despite a slightly confusing story, some daft characters and a hero that had as much charisma as Jimmy Carr who climbed/refused to climb some things like a TWAT.

Yeah, I think that InFamous is deffo the better looking game, BUT there is a SHITLOAD more stuff going on with Prototype at any given time and, oh my, have you done a Devastator attack in a crowded area???? Holy guacamole(sp?) It's like summink out of a film innit?

I have to say that I REALLY enjoy taking down military bases and all of the XP it gets you.

I've been playing a couple of things recently, mostly older 360 releases that I can now justify given their reduced price tag (although for some reason I still can't justify getting Alone in the Dark on 360 for £4.99). Although Burnout Paradise was great fun it seemed a little too focused on driving and takedowns were far too easy to accomplish. But there is no real alternative to the balls-out hi-octane smash 'em up and now I'm playing through FlatOut on the 360 again because it's just so damned fun to smash stuff up. It's like Red Faction in a car, and I really think that with a better engine, more polish and moving away from the street races to the dirt ones a sequel to this would be bloody fantastic. I wonder if will ever be made though...

Speaking of Red Faction, is anyone still playing it? I think now that it's out I'll wait until it goes down to £20, but how does it stand up to extended play? As the destructey stuff looked like great fun but I didn't know how well the open-world would work and I thought it might suffer from Assassin's Creed syndrome-getting boring and repetitive over time. If anyone has any views let us know.

For fans of PC puzzle games I've just finished the first episode of the new Monkey Island game, called Launch of the Screaming Narwhal and it's a pretty good Monkey Island game and a decent puzzler. Strange it's being released in episodes when it's one long story but I'm looking forward to the next little chunk as it really is a nice light-hearted play.

Unlike Rainbow Six: Vegas 2, which needs so much attention and concentration it actually makes me fatigued after a session. It's good, but I think I need something shallow to mix it up a bit. I'm trying to get the gf involved in gaming but she only really likes platformers and simple racing games (like crash kart etc). I've bought the lego Star Wars double and Lego Indiana Jones because they're co-op and I'll enjoy playing them, but can anyone recommend anything else that she may like? And is it just me or do girls really only like playing what are essentially childrens games? Weird that.

I traded Infamous in for it a coupla weeks ago and have been playing it non-stop since then....endorsement enough?

Oh, and the online is pretty exceptional too by all accounts - from what I've heard; I've only played online for about 10 seconds!

I think the RFG multiplayer is just about the best outside of Halo and CoD, very fast, well populated and fun. The whole backpack idea borders on genius, and the only thing I think lets it down is that there are no vehicles, which means it doesn't really feel much like the solo game, which was the best game of the year so far for me.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen - Haven't played this much but it's really nice looking - almost as if you're getting to stomp around Liberty City in a big robot at some points, and the transformers themselves look great.

PGR4 - got back into this old bastard to round up a few achievements that were niggling me. It's great game but the things that pissed me off about it when it first came out resurface pretty quickly. BC really did seem to spend more time on the bikes than the cars, and although I enjoyed them in short spells, their inclusion was, without a doubt, to the detriment of the game as a whole.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 - Really enjoying this year's game after being rather "meh" about "09". The new putting feature makes putting too easy and it's still too easy overall (or too hard if you take off the fun bits that make it a Tiger game), and they still can't get basic rules right, but it plays a fine game of hitty-the-ballo-down-the-holey-in-pretty-surroundings.

Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood - This has surprised me hugely, and starts off with a dramatic civil war scenario that makes it feel more like Call of Duty than Call of Juarez. It's got huge levels (horses required) and some cool gameplay features (two brothers are playable with different ways of handling weapons and "bullet time" gunslinging abilities). Better than GUN, and less weird than Red Dead Revolver.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince - Beasted this game last week and... I don't regret a thing. ^o) It's repetitive as fuck and looks unfinished in places (a real shock for an EA game) ;) but still managed to be fun. Quidditch is half-arsed on-rails bollocks, but spell casting is well realised and potion-mixing rocks, but both are way overused.

Watchmen: The End Is Nigh - Only played a few levels of this before handing it off to our Crazypunk but was amazed how good the thumping combat felt, whilst simulataneously being horrified by some (but not all) of the graphics. Its similarity to the fabbo-lookin' Batman: Arkham Asylum ain't going to do it any favours either, although co-op play gives it a boost.

Batman: Arkham Asylum demo - On the marketplace now and it's a real doozy. One of the best looking games for a while, and plays well too with some pleasingly simple yet satisfying fisticuffs. Could be the Summer's big, and slightly unexpected, hit.

IL-2 Sturmovik Birds Of Prey demo - Played this (to death) last night and was highly impressed. At last we have a decent flight sim on a console! A real looker, you'll be amazed at the detail on the planes, but the ground detail is the most attractive thing. Dogfighting and air to ground attacking works so much better at propeller speeds, I found it strangely enjoyable after years of meh overly patronising and too-Japanesey-for-their-own-good Air Combats and its many clones, and that awful Tim Crancy's Hawx thing (which appeared to be a game based around the premise that we all want "Air Combat For Idiots.")
