I finally jacked in Heavy Rain, after button-pressing my way through an on-foot supermarket chase...err...why couldn't I just move myself around? I know that would make it like EVERY OTHER GAME EVER MADE, but there's kind of a good reason why we use joysticks (thumbsticks) to get ourselves around in-game, rather than pressing ENTIRELY RANDOM face buttons! Anyway.....MEH!

So, I went from the sedate (tedious) pace of this to God Of War III, and I'd just like to say:

HOLY FUCKAMOLE!!!!

OK, I tried the demo of GOW III and found it wanting, but the actual game is just....incredible. It's like a game designed by an angry 15 year old boy....on speed. I honestly thought that this wouldn't be my cuppa, but thanks to the wonders of trying out new shit risk-free from LoveFilm, I've found summink that totally rocks. I'm not very far through, so it could all change, but I'd be hard-pushed not to just recommend this already (at least on a rental) for the first level alone.

Does the fact that I gave up on Heavy Rain but really like GOW III make me a bit shallow?

No not at all, Heavy Rain was heavy in more ways than one. Tedious at times, it had its moments of excitement and quality but I've changed nappies and seen naked women, so I guess what was the real fascination of the game for most fanboys was lost on me. the was just another one of those games where you wonder why the developer just didn't go make an animated movie (and I'd lump the ridiculously overrated MGS4 in with that category).

If you found Heavy Rain tedious then I wouldn't even bother loading up Metro 2033 Juzzy - possibly the most hamfisted, annoying shooter set in the most boring and unattractive gaming world I've ever had the misfortune to visit. :X

Mind you, you loved Biocock and Fallasleep 3 so you'll probably find it fascinating and addictive. ;)

You know me too well :)

I do like post-apocalyptic settings, so I'm hoping that Metro will do it for me...once I've finished ripping the heads off ancient gods, I'll give it a go.....missing my lovely island paradise of Just Cause 2 after all that rain too...

Hunting in every dark corner and searching every dead body for the ammo that acts as the game's currency... Oh, and changing air filters regulary when out on the incredibly ugly and basic surface levels or you die. Sound tedious and mindnumbing enough? And those are the two best bits about Metro 2033. It's simply horrendous. I'd rather watch election programmes - with Peter Mandelson in. :axeman:

Glad you're enjoying GOW3 dude. I reviewed Number 2 way back when and it blew everything else out of the water-OTT, gory, ridiculous pace and massive scale battles. And even the boss battles were great fun! Don't get that often...

I remember playing the original GOW demo on PS2 way back when and hating it. However, since then I've played, loved and completed Heavenly Sword and am really enjoying Bayonetta (which are similar hack and slash games), so I've just ordered the complete trilogy to give it a reappraisal.

Just for completions sake, as I posted in the bargains thread - but Nier is now £14.99 at GAME and I know Indie was kinda interested. http://www.game.co.uk/search.aspx?s=nier
Thanks mate :)

Update:

Finished God of War III and found it as awesome right up to the end as it was at the start...fucking astonishing! Mind you, because I never play hack n slash type games, I did have it on Easy, so maybe that made it more fun for me?

Bon'll feel smug about this: played Metro 2033 for about 3 hours and then abandoned it; it just doesn't work. Maybe cos it feels clunky or maybe cos the story's a bit hackneyed I dunno. The fact that your companions ALWAYS fuck off, leaving you lumbered with baddies gets old really quickly too. Super-MEH!

Started playing Alan Wake and liking it - beautifully smooth and really just beautiful in places too.

After Alan, I've got Splinter Cell: Conviction......all of this thanks to LoveFilm!

Finished Alan Wake and I have to say (like others have already) that he overstayed his welcome by a good few hours. Not bad but he'd shown everything after 1.5 hours....

Next up is Splinter Cell Conviction from LoveFilm.

Well.. Red Dead Redemption (360) obviously. My game of the year so far, by some way from Just Cause 2 which was the best thing by miles previously.

Alan Wake (360). Good but not actually worth the wait. Beautiful at times with a neat game mechanic, but not that scary, not as polished as I'd expected, and rather predictable. RDR actually scared me more when bear or cougar hunting, so that probably says a lot.

Dead To Rights Retribution (360) - Saw the PS3 version being played and got attracted. Annoyingly clunky at times but when it works it feels cool as ice cubes. And the dog is brilliant, all game heroes should have a dog as a sidekick. Or a cat, or a donkey, or a really tough-looking rabbit that does kung fu.

Lost Planet 2 (360) - Ugh. Got this cheap with a T-shirt and it's just as well. At least the T-shirt will get some proper usage. Just as spectacular as the first game and just as clunky to play. Maybe it's amazing in 4-player co-op, but I doubt it as you'll all still be struggling with the daft controls, sluggish response, shite aiming, unhelpful camera, ridiculous weapon reload times etc etc...

Blur (PS3) - Had an hour or two on this before sending it off to Tel to review. The career mode seemed more fun than the 360 online MP beta and I managed to win a few races and master the power ups. Strange it has no replay mode as they'd have been spectacular. Presumably it was left out because you'd have the same problems as the Burnout guys did with AI cars popping in when they respawn and it all looking a bit weird.

Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands (360) - I guess I was in the minority liking the graphical style of the last game, and liking a princess saving my dumb ass every time I screwed up. It's gone back to time-rewindance and a more realistic look. Gameplay is similar to the old games and at times reminiscent of God Of War with a semi-fixed camera. Will be interested to see how it develops. Some new powers are very cool and fun to use, others are wimpy and a waste of time. Gameplay would appear to have struck a better balance of exploration, puzzling and swordplay than the last-gen trilogy, and the animation is as impressive as ever with some exciting but easy to pull off moves (does kicking an enemy off a high ledge ever get old?).

Alan Wake Hmmm, I'm playing this for the sake of it now. It does that whole hand holding thing with everything explained all the time (including one point where it was telling me how to use flares and the text stayed onscreen for ages - even though I had used a flare) but at other times, it is disorientating when you want to have a quick nosey off the beaten path looking for ammo, flasks etc.

It isn't scary, it is just annoying. As has been said many times on the net, the gameplay doesn't evolve. The same weapons and enemies time and again. I wish there was a better split of daytime/nightime settings. At the minute I'm bored stiff of wandering around in the dark and not really doing anything other than shoot shadow men. Pacing is something that this game has never heard of.

Red Dead Redemption still enjoying this, but as I have said previously, I can't see myself coming back to it once it is finished. In fact several times when playing, I have just thought "I can't wait to start GTA IV again". Mainly because I know that doing the missions lets me always take different routes and see new things. RDR looks fantastic, but everything is there to see for miles. No surprises at all really with regards the environment.

Mass Effect 2 is still my game of the year so far. But I have my hopes pinned on Fallout: New Vegas to trump that later in the year.

I love the mountainous area up north (Tall Trees?). But why so many bears? Talk about #if you go down to the woods today# :jawdrop: Still, it's a good (if deadly dangerous) way to earn loadsamoney quickly, especially if you sell all the bits in Mexico.

I gave a bounty a nasty surprise when I just happened to chase him down and hog tie him on a railway line... just as I heard the train coming... I was expecting the train to just pass over him or push him out of the way - it doesn't. :o :'( :X

Heads up Diddly that there is a rather nasty glitch in Prince of Persia, which I have just fallen foul of. I need to give a slight spoiler and say that it is after you get an upgraded sword. After that point, if you die, there is a good chance the game drops you back in a room from which there is no way out.

The apparent solution is to go to your game saves on your HDD and delete the auto save file and leave the backup save file alone. I haven't had a chance to check whether it works yet, but that is the only solution given by Ubisoft so far, as lots of people are encountering it. So much for playtesting,

edit: tried it and it works, but fuck me it takes you back a long way. I have lost maybe 1-2 hours of gameplay :/

I'll be making a backup of my save on my memory card from now on when I play this game.

That's outrageous.

Especially on a (I'm guessing) linear game that can only be done in one way - I can almost always forgive glitches like this (of which I don't think I've actually had the misfortune to actually experience one first hand) on open-world games that you can attack from pretty much any direction as it can't be playtested...tell a lie: there's summink happened in Fallout 3 (my only glitch in 130+ hours) where I simply can't sell bloodpacks to a certain guy despite doing every prerequisite....shit happens!
