I was hoping that the next Oblivion might use the Rage engine now that Zenimax own ID. But I'm sure I've seen somewhere that ID might not actually be letting anyone use that engine. I do agree that F3 would look a lot nicer with a newer engine though.

As regards the bugs - with an open world game I don't think it is necessarily an "excuse" to let it off bugs because it is open world. But it certainly gives it more leeway in my book. I know I keep mentioning it, but if something as linear as an F1 game can have a patch that fixes literally dozens of things wrong with the game, then it is totally understandable that a game designed to be played in multiple ways is likely to be buggy as well.

MW2, Black Ops etc?

Love that, and it's not even an exaggeration. It's a DOOM map I believe? The blood/damage effect was better in DOOM too.

Yes the ironic sense of humour appealed to me too! Yes when a mate sent it to me I said Doom straight away. It might be the first level, but I'm probably wrong!

Call of Duty: Black Ops - Well I played some more BO MP today and it does seem a bit more balanced than MW2, but you still get campers and spawn killers (unless I was being really unlucky.) The perks bollocks is now SO overcomplicated that I don't even think Treyarch understood what was going on in the end, and why do CoD games always insist that shotguns have a range of no more than 15 feet? Even with some bigger maps in the last two games I still find CoD MP mindless and shallow compared to what I consider the real benchmarks: Halo 2, 3 Reach and BF Bad Company 2.

The solo campaign is like an action movie written and directed by an over-caffeinated 12 year-old who saw a heroic sacrifice in a movie once and thought "Oh my God that's like, SO cool! I will have one some LOADS in my game when I writes it" and is SO scared of getting lost he makes everything as linear as a drag race. You will honestly laugh a bollock off at some of the idiot-help nav points, which are sometimes 20 feet apart (out of shotgun range then.) If you stick The Andromeda Strain, The Deer Hunter, Rambo, Lost and 24 in a random plot generator - you get Black Ops! Plot-wise it's complete and utter bollocks, I am honestly waiting for black smoke monster or a polar bear to appear, they're about the only things missing. As for quality, well I'll bet Treyarch cried when they saw how much better MoH's copter level was than theirs, and some of the visuals just don't mesh, sometimes the scaling looks out, shadows missing, other times (some of the explosions in particular) look amazing. This is getting to be almost like a "guilty pleasure" it's SO bad/no too bad/up/down I can't wait to see what the fuck happens next.

Edit: Well, what happened next was two guys on top of a building decided to die without performing the game's usual pre-scripted and badly animated death fall, so they just stood there looking alive (unless I looked at them through the thermal scope, through which they'd disappeared)...

Then the campaign had me revisit a location to see an event from another character's perspective. A clever plot element yes, but when the bodies that I'd killed on my previous visit just are just standing upright with their arms outstretched like badly-posed department store dummies you begin to wonder if maybe this game should have been released at all... Please let it end soon, I can't take much more, this game feels a bit like MGS only worse, like you're an actor in a bad film and are just expected to move from mark to mark and prompt to prompt. :-/

It seems that there is no stopping Call of Duty. Black Ops did $360m worth of sales, up 16% on last years MW2. It seems your average punter doesn't give two shits who makes the franchise - which must have Activision rubbing their hands with glee after the whole Infinity Ward dramas.

As a franchise, it is (and pardon the pun) bullet-proof.

A good mate of mine has had a PS3 for maybe 2 years, and he's only ever played four games on it. Modern Warfare, World at War, MW2 and Black Ops.

He readily admits that he hasn't completed the campaign mode on any of them. Not because he thinks they're dull, but because he feels pressure to invest all his gaming time earning perks and ranking up in multi-player to ensure he doesn't fall behind his PSN mates.

I think this is the real reason behind its success, and also the reason why we're unlikely to see a major reboot of the franchise for a long, long time.

Agreed. When's Half Life 3 coming out? Or Deus Ex for that matter? I need something with a single-player focus for once (that isn't made by bethesda or rockstar)

I've played a little more of Black Ops this evening. I must admit I am enjoying the ride as much as it is a guilty pleasure. Gotta agree with Diddly though (excuse me while I wash my mouth out with bleach after that!) :P I do prefer the latest MoH as a game. It might have been short, but I did like it's more tactical approach at times.

This does look really nice though, and I'm a sucker for pretty graphics. Although I have just done a snow level and it looked a bit shit to be honest. Can't stand the fucking endlessly spawning enemies either. I was at the top of that bastard hill in Vietnam looking down at one of the ridiculously OTT waypoints nicely highlighted in yellow wondering why the fuck my mates weren't either rushing down the hill as I picked off bad guys, or picking off bad guys as I rushed down the hill. Turns out you have to do the latter and basically do a suicide run while your A.I mates do a fucking terrible job of providing cover fire. Really shit when they put that Arnie shite in a game. Arnie is fucking invincible in his movies - I'm not in this game! Something they lose sight of. I would hate to try shit like that on the hardest difficulty.

Now then, as soon as you've all read that I agreed with Diddly on something, I'm deleting this message before the people at the local mental home come and take me away.

Yep, that really was the final CoDstraw for me. I felt like I'd played that sort of section a hundred times before in CoD games: a badly designed, linear, brainless headfuck with literally endless respawning enemies and all you could do is leg it to the checkpoint and hope things went your way. I dropped the difficulty to normal there as it was giving me a pain deep down in the sub-cockle area. What a bag of shite. The ending when it comes is a blessed relief as far as I'm concerned, and what happens after the titles may be amusing but puts into perspective where the game lies both in my mind and I suspect in the minds of the devs themselves; the whole game, not just the zombies co-op sub-game is a spoof, and should be probably be taken as such. I made the mistake of trying take it seriously. Fool. :$

Mafia II

One final difficulty spIke and shit save/point too many saw me abandon this. Shame really, cos I was right near the end and all. Oh well, good old Tesco/LoveFilm sees me.....

Spiderman: Dimensions

Quite enjoying this, despite not being a comicbook nerd....and I'm finding Spidey's quips genuinely funny. The different types of Spidey add spice.

....and then I've got

The Force Unleashed II

Waiting for me when I get home - good old LoveFilm indeed!

Set aside a few hours and it's done in a sitting. Tres short. It looks spectacular, but could have built upon the first one and been brilliant. Sadly its simply doesn't.

Juz, what was the difficulty spike? The dock shootout? There is a piss easy way to do that if it was.

Force Unleashed II

Holy fuck, I'm enjoying this!

And I know exactly why - it ain't cos I'm a Star Wars fan (cos I'm not), it's because this is the closest a Next Gen game has come to Psi Ops.

The feeling of power is immense, and, like Indie says it's a real looker.

SMELL MY LIGHTSABRE, YOU MOTHER!
