Dead Space 2 As far as Chapter 3 and so far so good. Looks good, sounds great through my Turtle Beach X11's. Plays almost identically to the first one, well exactly actually. Not much innovation on that front. Scary? Meh. Maybe a tad, I haven't played it in the dark with the sound cranked up yet but we're all grown ups aren't we! And the only thing that scares me these days is my mortgage and a weekend at home with the kids when Mrs Indie is away. Sets pieces galore and they're done superbly. Only thing that disappoints so far is the fact that its on rails. Okay its not an open world game, but none the less there is only one route and thats it. For a game set on a huge space station (The Sprawl) its a bit crappy. |

Started playing Dead Space 2 today as well. As someone who hasn't played the first one, can anyone tell me if locked doors become open with backtracking, or are they merely there to hint that the place isn't one long corridor? Not had many scares myself yet - maybe a couple of little moments, but as I played it in the dark with the volume up, I think it's a case of sudden loud noises making you jump rather than anything genuinely scary. It does look nice though. with lots of little details, but as Indie said, it is very linear (as in narrow hospital corridor linear) so I guess they can cram the details in. Enjoying it though I have to say. I did try the first game (for maybe 25 mins) but it didn't click with me at all. Edited by Retrovertigo, Jan 28 2011, 10:11 PM.

Hi mate on iPod so not going to write war and peace! Yes in the first game there was lots of revisiting areas where locked doors became available. Assuming it's the same here too or maybe on a second walkthrough. Time will tell. I'm in the church and no back tracking yet but it is early days. |

So following on from my post above, I finished Dead Space 2 last night. Sadly there never was any backtracking, and so the intrigue as to what lies behind those lock doors will forever remain. Had to hurry it along as I needed to give it back to someone, so had to switch down the difficulty toward the end as it was getting silly. That plus I think the quality (not that I was blown away by the game) takes a dip during the last couple of chapters (in my opinion of course) It did have its moments. I particularly liked where you could hear Isaac's name being whispered as he wandered around. If only because it took me back to Alien Vs Predator on the Jaguar. You'd often hear the predator whisper something as you made your way through the levels. I like spooky shit like that. Otherwise I can't say it scared me at all to be honest. I did like the detail in some of the graphics though. Offset by the fact that bar a few occasions, you always were lead along very narrow paths. I was thinking as I started this that I might go back and try Dead Space 1, but I'm not so sure now, seeing as the general consensus is that this is the superior game. |

Hey chap, yes I finished it too a couple of days ago. And while it was good, I'm not sure it was as good a Dead Space 1 - perhaps it just wasn't different enough. Plus the multiplayer was way too imbalanced and playing as a necromorph is too frustrating, spend more time waiting to spawn that actually playing. None the less, quality game. Regarding those doors mate, I'm pretty sure (having read something since last posting) that they are available if you have completed Dead Space Ignition. Having got a copy of that when I pre-ordered DS2, I'm not sure I have it in me to complete Ignition just to open a couple of doors in DS2. It is probably the worst game on XBL arcade! Sounds to me like the thing I hated about the first game (lack of ammo/health) has been ramped up in this one so I won't even bother with a rental despite Games TM giving it 10/10. |

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West This was on my maybe list and as I’ve been scratching around for games to play (not much out there doing it for me at the moment), I picked this up – and I’m rather glad I did. It looks pretty special in the graphics department and for a post apoplectic city setting (for the most part); it’s surprisingly bright with it’s of lush plants overgrowing on the decaying buildings. In fact it’s hard not to compare the quality and colours of the environment to Uncharted 2. The first few levels didn’t impress much, in fact the first level (sorry showing my age, I mean ‘chapter’) is the demo. And probably doesn’t do it any justice. The characters are likeable and Andy Serkis does a great job voicing Monkey (as do the other two actors). Plus Pigsy has bags of character and the odd funny joke. But they’re characters you can actually like and care about as the game progresses and their own relationships develop. Combat is quite satisfying if a tad repetitive but not to the point it isn’t enjoyable. My only gripes, which by no means hampered my enjoyment of the game, were the iffy camera and that the platforming sections lack any gaming skill whatsoever. Indeed it’s impossible to fall, miss time a jump or struggle to figure out where to go. One simply presses the jump button in the vague direction you have to go, and hey presto. But that aside the gameplay, visuals and pretty bloody good story all add up to a great (if not short) game. Fingers crossed for a follow up. |

Yeah I really enjoyed Enslaved despite having all the same reservations you did, it definitely deserves a sequel. And anyone else playing Test Drive Unlimited 2? Just like the original I'm on a daily love/hate relationship with the game. The online seems broken, but great when it works, the handling is simple but demanding (no traction or stability assists, and lots of powerful RWD cars), the cars sound great but look a bit pant-ish after F3, GT5 (and even NFS Hot Pursuit), the pop up/pop-down is a disgrace, the frame rate hovers smoothly between 15 and 25FPS, and the whole "TDU Life" thing, clubs, casinos, gambling... the voice acting... JESUS what were they thinking?? I know this is supposed to be harmless aspirational stuff, but the in-game characters, like the "people" in The Hills, 90210 et cetera are all so fucking self-absorbed and obnoxious that it could be sponsored by al Qaeda in order to drum up more anti-American feeling. I often get American friends ask me "why the worlds hates America." I usually tell them "it's not entirely true, and a lot of it's based on jealousy" but this sort of shit really goes a long way to reinforcing the myth and making it fact. And while I can accept it in Hawaii, why the FUCK is Ibiza full of annoying, overprivileged and whiny Americans? Everyone knows it's full of soulless, deluded sex & drugs-crazed Brits. With all the house buying, hairdressing, furniture changing and wotnot this game is more like "Sims Turismo" than what I'd imagine a Test Drive game to be. I may be wrong but I don't think you can even sell a car until you don't have any space for it any more, and can't sell "prize" cars or even paint them or get rid of them, even if they're useless, hideous pieces of shit. I mean. EH? Forgot to mention the other game I've been playing lately, the criminally ignored Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom - I think Retro mentioned it a while back but it's a brilliant mix of Zelda, Ico, Shadow of the Collossus and maybe even Dead to Rights. It's great fun, plays like a dream and the combat is simple, spectacular and satisfying, the 'RPG-lite with platforming and puzzles'-type gameplay really teaches you to use a loveable but dozy and slow AI partner (the Majin) and simple combos to great effect. One of the few games I really enjoyed squeezing out the full 1000Gs on. Edited by Diddly, Feb 25 2011, 02:38 PM.

Ahhh, missed your mention of Majin there. Loved that game to be honest. Thought it was great how you would be presented with a new section to negotiate, and there would be no patronising fly-by of the camera highlighting all the bits you'd need to manipulate etc. It just left you to your own devices. Didn't manage the 1000g initially. But it is a game I intend to go back to. Been playing Bulletstorm and holy shit I love it. I'm really not the best FPS person in the world (usually playing on normal) but that doesn't mean I can't appreciate a good one when it comes along. It's batshit mental, with profanity scattered liberally throughout - but with a nod and a wink letting you know that they are aware it is totally over the top. The weapons are great, building up combos with them is really enjoyable. I love how there are obvious environmental sections unique to each area, that you just know will give you great combo points if you can use them to kill the enemy. Basically you kill the enemy types in various ways and that gives you points to spend on new weapons, upgrading old ones, and also buying ammo (but ammo and weapons can still be picked up off enemies). It also looks spectacular in places. Yes it's all a bit Gears of War with a splash of colour (in fact it reminds me of Enslaved at times with its colour palette) The only thing I find disappointing with the graphics, is the distant backdrops of the city, which are flat bitmaps, and not particularly high resolution ones. Spoils the effect at times. But it is a real roller coaster ride - to use a typical cliche. Looking forward to replaying it and trying for all the combos, just because they are so much fun. |

I don't think there's the slightest chance you'd get 1000Gs on Majin unless you ground the levelling ones and power god ones out like I did, which I don't think you were ever gonna get in the normal course of the game, which suggests a slight lack of testing, but all full-on RPGs do that too so... At least they were fun to get, I loved the combat so it was a simple matter of finding a suitable group of skelly warriors near a save point and kill 'em, change outfits to make 'em respawn, rinse and repeat. I was actually sad when I maxed them out, as I'd started to experiment on different ways of clearing this group of enemies (got it down to just one Majin attack and two hits!) All in all like you said, nice puzzles/enemies to get past, and no clue how to do it, which sometimes meant some searching/trapsing, but overall, fun and refreshingly different. Am looking to trade something for Bulletstorm as I really enjoyed the demo and the TV ad makes it look awesome - I particularly love the dig at CoD. |
