Been playing Just Cause 2 again and I'm totally hooked. I admit I got bored of it first time around as it seemed too overwhelming, and with too much repetition. I still feel the repetition is too much, with far too many identikit villages, but as my OCD seems to be getting worse as I get older, I'm finding great pleasure in 100%'ing every little place I can find. The story and voice acting are still shit, and I maintain that GTA IV is the better game to play storywise, gameplay wise, and graphically. But that doesn't detract from the fact that I'm having a blast with this at the moment. I think I'm at 40 hours now and haven't even found half the locations yet! |

I've done 106 hours with it and still ain't finished all of it (done "story" but am still on 69%). I played GTA IV again and disagree about it being better graphically; I genuinely think the lighting, day/night cycle and weather in JC2 plus its lovely framerate makes it much easier on my eye. My game (along with Fallout 3) of the last 6 years or so. |

Yeah JC2 was a cracker, I played it until I got the 1000Gs and then gave it to my brother so I could get some work done. I was surprised that after maxing it out there were several bases still to do at the end. Loved some of the easter eggs; the hot air balloon, the shark board, the LOST stuff. One of the most repetitive open world games but never really got on my wick. I hoped they'd do some DLC missions for it, all they did was some needless weapons and crappy vehicles (although the rocket boosters for the chute were fun, and saved my ass on a few occasions). |

You say repetitive, but I tells thee what - some of those faction missions are properly different to each other. What I also love is that, despite the hundreds of locations, all of the little villages are different...and the difference between the snowy peaks and the beaches, the thunderstorms etc. etc. Oh and the Mile High Club - fucking brilliant. |

No doubt about the environment, the most varied and beautiful yet in a game. Ah yes, I remember the mile high club, I thought I was dead clever doing this til I saw the one below Wonder if you can land one of the fast fighter jets on it? |

Hmmm.I respectfully disagree. Having been playing this constantly the last few days merely seeking out the villages and avoiding the missions for now, I have to say many villages (and airports and military bases) are exactly the same, down to the layout and t-junctions in the roads running through them Don't get me wrong, it is a phenomenal achievement, but many assets are used again and again. |

Despite bricking it that I might have another Deadly Premonition heading my way, I'm happy to report that Shadows of The Damned is a fucking cool game. Demons, birds in lingerie, bit of metal and horror film referencing, and endless (and I mean endless) references to stiffies means that this is a trillion times better than Deadly Premonition. Some fuckin brill voice acting and if anyone here gives it a go, take the time to read any books you find laying around. |

My biggest problems with Shadows of the Damned, are that it gets old real quick. The environments look incredibly dated (not to mention the fact that hell just looks like some european village, and is VERY brown/orange?). Oh and some boss battles are tedious as fuck. I stuck it on easy (or normal, not sure now) because they just went on for a fucking age :/ But yeah, some nice ideas in the game, but it should have looked a ton better than it does, plus the controls are a bit wonky. Having Resi-ish style controls but then have you fumble around in those god awful shadow sections looking for a goats head is not my idea of fun. Some of the sound design is amazing though. I used my 5.1 headphones while playing it and the bass especially is fucking amazing in places. Best I have ever heard. |

Basically, I'm too knackered to play in the evenings (we're still suffering broken nights with Little Zai, believe it or not) so I only get to play for a couple of hours at the weekend. Even then, it's rarely without interruption because Little Zai comes in and tries to watch me killing things - although he can usually be fobbed off if we set up the Wii in the living room and let him play Mario Kart for a bit. Anyway, this week, I have been playing Catherine, which is some really fucked up shit. Basically, it's a block puzzle game interspersed with conversations with sheep, moral dilemma polls, "roleplaying" in a bar and some erotic anime and graphic violence. Very, very odd, and not really very good and yet I am compelled to continue. |

I take it back - maybe you WILL like Deadly Premonition you fuckin weirdo! EDIT: Finally gave up on Shadows of The Damned due to one 15 minute (COUNT IT!) boss battle too many (like Retro says). I hate boss battles anyway, but this one followed on from another pseudo-boss battle that kinda happened 3 times (in between walking over a giant, topless bird, which was nice) and an utterly awful 2d side-scrolling paper-theatre bit. Game devs - PLEASE abandon boss battles!!!!!! Edited by Juz, Aug 9 2011, 09:50 AM.

Overall I hate the fucking things too m8, and I've played some stinker boss battles myself lately, some of which appear to be game-enders for most people on anything other than the easiest setting; I actually gave up on a game that is presumably aimed at kids (Ape Escape) because it was literally giving me a pain in the sub-cockle area. Most recently RF Armageddon, Duke Forever, Trannies Dark of the Moon, Juarez teh Cartel and FEAR 3 have dished up a couple of crappy, intensely annoying ones each (although the FEAR 3 ones seem a tad better than most). I did find the "boss" battles in Crysis 2 and inFamous 2 fun though. They will learn - especially when they finally realise that all they need to do is go play a Miyamoto game and copy what he does to make boss battles fun. Driver: San Francisco demo on XBL btw. Nice, typically Reflectionsy driving model, very useable in-car view (love the driver's arms animation!), smooth as silk, loads of traffic & pedestrians, shite, bland scenery and buildings that makes the former possible. Bizarre "shift" game mechanic that puts you into the crooks POV, which could turn out to be brilliant, or make the game a repetitive bag of shite. I wonder why they gave up trying to out-do GTA? Was DRIV3R and Parallel Lines' out-of-car gunplay really that bad? F3AR - probably the best F.E.A.R. game yet, they latest game engine is quite a looker. A useable cover mode, decent enemy AI and top ragdoll makes the combat a lot of fun, and playing the campaign through as the 2nd character Fettel (he has limited telekenetic powers and can take over the bodies of enemy soldiers) is a lot of fun, as is playing co-op online or in a very playable split screen. No idea why they spent so much time on a multiplayer mode, no one seems to be playing it, it's not really why anyone buys the game is it? Call of Juarez: The Cartel - not quite as bad as I was expecting but I can see why this is 18 quid or less already. The co-op saves it from a real slaughtering. Nuff said. |

Yeah, the boss battles in InFamous were actually not too painful. It's just so fucking 1985 to have em imho. |

As a case in point, I've just reached the final battle in Mass Effect 2 and it's a stupid boss battle. It's the only one in the whole game that is so old school and just feels out of place - not to mention bloody frustrating. It's totally spoiled the last mission which was really awesome until that point, especially with the permanent deaths of characters that I had come to care about and a real feeling of desperately fighting for survival.

I'm struggling remember that one, but I know exactly what you mean - and it's like Bon says as well; some of em either stop you in your fucking tracks, never to return to the game, or just leave a shitty taste in your mouth at the very end of a previously enjoyable experience. Either way, they are just lazy, stupid, take-you-out-of-the-moment shitfests that don't belong in this bold new age of gaming; they literally made sense when they were at the end of a linear, side-scrolling effort back in 1985, in the same way they make no fucking sense in the middle of a fully-realised, free-roaming "universe" in 2011. Maybe we should start a petition? |
