I know there aren't any RPG fans here (pretty sure that is correct?) but I've been playing Xenoblade Chronicles on the Wii.

It really is an impressive game, and for the Wii features some spectacular graphics at times. What is nice is that they have streamlined many of the usual JRPG issues. Fast travel is available to zip around to any places you have visited, side quests are complete when you kill monsters or find the items you need without having to then travel back to the person who initiated it. If you die you are placed back at the nearest landmark, with no loss of XP, money or items. So many more things that I could list, but it would take forever.

One of the most impressive things though, is the sheer scale of the game. Areas load in in massive chunks and so you really do feel immersed in the world. It makes it feel like you are genuinely exploring when you aren't interrupted by loading screens every few steps. And the draw distance is immense. It obviously can look a little rough on a large screen because of the limited resolution of the Wii. But that doesn't stop you realising how technically impressive this game is considering the hardware.

It has been nice seeing it get pretty much universal praise. What does amuse me though, is seeing americans up in arms because it isn't being released in the U.S. They are going mental, arguing that because it has been translated, they should be getting it there. Back in the day the SNES had some great games which were released in the states, but never came out here - however I don't recall the same outcry back then! :)

Well, thanks to a dearth of releases (thanks Summer fuck-all-releases-a-thon), I've gone back on my word (rare) and got LoveFilm to send me Dead Space 2, and I have to say that I'm enjoying it waaay more than the first, which fucking infuriated me. It might be cos I totally pussied-out this time and just started on Easy, but I'm not finding it hateful at all...quite the reverse, in fact.

Next up: Lego Pirates Of The Caribbean.

Lego Pirates looks stunning at times. Especially the desert island levels. The water is lush.

Played that in a couple of sittings and loved in
Played on normal and found it so much easier than the first, but also so much more enjoyable

Was playing Dragon Age which I had left on the shelf since it came out. Just my type of RPG, however Deus Ex has just turned up so its off to try that

Well the only problem with Deus Ex are the bloody long load times (esp with saved games)

Everything else is brilliant.
Love games where a group of people can discuss playing it only to find no two of them did things the same. Deus Ex sure is that
Its not as "open world" as some may have been led to believe but the actual ways you can go about missions (and also the order you do them) is as free as they come

I've only played a bit of Deus Ex so far, but it's uber-meh for me at the mo. Looks bland as hell and not a lot of textures going on. I know it's supposed to be all futurey and that, but it just seems like everything's made out of single sheets of plain metal or summink?

I've just gone in all guns blazing (my default setting) and wasted some genero-baddies. Maybe I'll try doing the stealth thing at some point...

So far with Deus Ex and so "game from 4 years ago."

Can't see what it's got going for it?

Meh-us Ex? Yep, same for me too Juz. Bought the Augmented edition and played it for an hour. What a lot of fannying around for so little action. The hacking mini-game feels like someone at Eidos Montreal played Paradroid recently and really liked it. Can't wait to get to one of the thrilling only-one-way-to-do-them boss fights (shoot 'em in the face and dodge them till they die) that go against everything else in the game, that'll probably end it for me, although the regular combat action is a bit more tolerable than the Xbox game (Invisible War?), although there's comically and inexplicably still no immediate melee attack at least it feels like the weapons are meant to be there - that was another game I just didn't 'get'; vague, fuzzy, clunky, tedious. From the demo I'd rather play the unpretentious Bodycount, I appear to have increasingly simple tastes when it comes to FPS, life is too short for games like Human Revolution, and there are far too many other games around.

The much-better-than-it-needed-to-be Cars 2 whetted my appetite for an arcade racer and as an antidote to Meh-us Ex I dug up the fabulous Burnout Paradise, had a go on the free-to-download bikes (which were awesome but kinda pointless solo) and I blankly refuse to buy the Island for a few more easy achieves so went back and finished the even more spectacular Season mode in Split/Second Velocity instead. What a corking game that was, somehow had the addictive quality that so many other games lack (not just racing games), despite the steering oddity and the difficulty spikes-o-la, I really enjoyed it. The end titles promise one, and I really hope they do a sequel.

Ah well, back to Deus Ex I spose... :-/

I'm mixed on Deus Ex. I love wandering the city doing the side quests, moving from one place to the next. But then you have the proper missions which seem so linear by comparison (size wise rather than how you approach them) and I can't fucking stand them.

I actually think it looks quite nice graphically though. Sure, some architecture is low poly, but there are lots of little details....the place looks lived in. Oh and it has a decent famerate, barely any jaggies, and no screen tearing! So some low res textures etc are a small price to pay for stable performance.

Agree with Bon that Cars 2 is a nice game. But jesus, for a "kids" game, it sure got bloody difficult at times in the time I had it. Very nice game though and quite the revelation, as most people would probably just assume it was a cheap tie-in. The devs put some real love and effort into it though.

I'm with you on this. Been saying for some time that po-faced stuff like Medal of Duty and Call of Honor are just a fucking grind for me now. Gimme Bulletstorm any day of the week.

Really enjoying Driver San Francisco - Don't know how Reflections managed to make it feel so varied when you never leave the car. It's got a crackers plot and they nicked gameplay ideas from all over the place, but they work so damned well you don't mind, and overall the game feels extremely original. They even managed to stick in a few surprises here and there. Possibly my favourite driving game of the year. Shame about most of the soundtrack though (especially considering how good the original music is), I had to to turn it right down and off eventually; too much jazz-funk-junk-wank. And Jamiroquai? :axeman: [ahole]

Can't say Driver has piqued my interest at all. Not keen on the whole zipping from car to car idea (but then on the whole I prefer more realistic racers) and graphics wise it looks very dated. I watched a few videos and a lot of buildings I saw had very basic geometry with some fuzzy textures on top. I know that isn't the be all and end all of racing games. But recently I've been reading an appreciation thread on PGR 3 and 4, and those games still looks amazing. Even the now dated Midnight Club looks better. I think Driver took too many missteps for me to buy it at full price.

Although I'm not yet playing it, I've taken a punt on Dead Island as it is getting some reasonable scores coming in (save Eurogamers 6/10, but who listens to them?) and I'm a sucker for co-op games. That coupled with some Fallout/Borderland comparisons has me quite excited.

Im onto Driver now having completed Deus Ex (and having done all the side missions etc whoever said it was a 30+ hour game is mental, completed it in well under 20)

Mixed feelings. Another game that is not as clever or as detailed as it thinks it is.
The whole "it does not matter what you do you cant get ALL the augmentation" is pointless as you can get ALL the decent ones.
Before I was even half way in I was able to hack the highest terminals and never get caught and finished the game with 25+ Nuke Viruses. I also finished with 400+ ammo for my submachine gun and pistol and despite the game having some big weapons they where just pointless and too little too late

The hardest boss was the first and they got easier as they got on. The final boss could be done with 3 grenade launcher shots

I enjoyed the first half but then as I got to a level that saw me able to do what I want how I want I realised I was just playing it for completions sake
