Started Dead Island and it's more interesting than I was expecting. Looking forward to playing the co-op, like Left4Dead I imagine it'll make it a lot of fun. The the start is remarkably similar to L4D, but the game is a lot more thoughtful, mission-based, and the zombies act more like Romero ones than 28 Days Later/L4D sprinters. The atmosphere is very good, combat (mostly melee and throwing stuff so far, although I found a truck and got some road kills in) is as violent as you'd expect and very satisfying. The game engine has all the same problems as Juarez; tearing (even in cut scenes!), clipping, crappy character models etc, but it looks pretty enough in places to distract me. Finished Driver San Francisco last night, and can report that I enjoyed just about every second of it. I was amazed just how inventive it was at times. Some of the challenges were a real bitch, but fun to do - it's a terrible, classic example of a 'one more go' game - my 4am bedtime will attest to this. Will hang onto it to play some more online. Along with inFamous 2 probably my favourite games of the year so far.

Rise of Nightmares The future of game control is here! If, by "future" you mean taking soooooooo long to do something that'd take 5 seconds with a controller AND having to stand up to do it AND stand with your arm in the air for long stretches to "auto walk" then we've reached it, baby! So terrible I abandoned after 10 mins. Thank fuck for LoveFilm. I'm actually finding their other offering Dead Rising 2 almost as boring. A mate said it was way more enjoyable than the original....he lied. Nearly finished Lego Pirates and it's been almost all good, barring a glitch and the award for Most Times I've Wondered What The Fuck To Do Next. |

Yeah I watched the poor geezer from Sega try and make it look cool and responsive at Gamescom. I was offered a hands-on but politely refused. I don't think we'll get a review copy somehow. Perhaps you could do one Juzzy?

I thought that was the game where you took a small step forward to indicate that you wanted to move? Have they changed that or am I thinking of another game. In terms of Kinect controls, taking a step forward seemed the best solution to be honest. But really they should be sticking to cheap and nasty quick-fix games, unless its an obvious fit like Dance Central. Some of the latest Kinect videos have been plain embarrassing. The Star Wars Kinect game being a prime example. No wonder that has been delayed. |

No can do a review bro; sent it right back! @ Retro - yeah it's the one where you step forward....however they've obviously realised it doesn't work well and gave you the option to "auto move" by holding your hand up like a total dweeb. |

Dead Island (360) - played some co-op today and apart from a few random party drops and a weird glitch that kept killing us all and costing us money (the screen repeatedly reds out like you're being attacked and every time you die it costs you $ so it could literally bankrupt you), t'was great fun. Reminds me a lot of playing Borderlands with mates (though I enjoy the DI combat a lot more), so if you liked that you'll probly like this. As you'd expect it supplies plenty of "Eeeeek" moments, but I wasn't expecting so many LoLs (kicking zombies in a swimming pool so they drown, or telling a mate the area is clear when there's a room full of zombies chasing you). I can see myself playing this a lot, and with 4 characters and a shitload of missions it just about justifies it. Resistance 3 (PS3) - I'm conflicted about this as it plays well, is damned spectacular at times and yet still looks and feels too much like the original (PS3 launch game) to keep me excited. Insomniac always seem to do the same thing (they do the Ratchet & Clank games too); give you some great, fun to use weapons but ultimately give you too many to play with, so they limit the ammo and you're constantly changing weapons. There's a reason why Halo, Bad Company, Gears & CoD restrict you to two or three at a time, it cuts down on the fannying around. And there's a reason why R3 pauses when you pop the weapon select wheel; you bloody well need plenty of time to sort out which two weapons you're going to use. Warhammer 40K Space Marine (360) - only just started this before I got tempted into Dead Island co-op, but really enjoyed it. Looks a bit like Gears, but if Gears is a cover shooter then this is an uncover in-yer-face melee/shooter. Love the noise the chainsword makes, and splattering hordes of Orcs with London accents is never going to get tired for me. Try the demo, it's fun. |

I'm still waiting on Dead Island, and am pissed off that when it arrives I'll be under leveled compared to a lot of players. Fucking Amazon shit service - they didn't despatch it until late Fri afternoon! How many online shops these days ship games on the day of release? Gaahhhhhh. |

Hmmmmn - I better check out that Warhammer thingy - avoided it cos I thought it was all 40-sided dice and all that shittery. EDIT: As an aside, finally finished Lego Pirates and, man is that a seriously densely-packed game! Even after finishing, I think I was at 54% completion - there is a LOT to go back and get. Even if I'd have bought it, I'd have been impressed to be honest. Recommended. Edited by Juz, Sep 13 2011, 12:11 PM.

Dead Island turned up lunchtime yesterday thankfully Enjoying it so far I have to say. Compared to Juarez I think there is a significant graphical leap. Obviously I now need to start leveling up my character.I like how you feel so vulnerable though. Most FPS games have you fairly secure in the knowledge you can blast everything in the face from a distance. Not so with this games up close and personal vibe. I must admit though, I did expect the island to be a little bigger than it actually is - and I was convinced it had a day night cycle, not sure why. I just hope there is plenty of content there, as usually when games install as quickly as this one did, they tend to be a bit on the tiny side. I'm sure it is relatively easy to add DLC quests to this game though. But yeah, like what I've seen so far. Just need to get Deus Ex out of the way now before Gears 3 drops next week. In fact the next couple of months are going to be bloody expensive. Skyrim, Gears, F1 2011, Forza 4, Uncharted 3....the lost goes on of quality releases. Hopefully publishers see the success of stuff like Deus Ex and realise that the late summer months can still see big sales. Edited by Retrovertigo, Sep 14 2011, 08:35 AM.

....or you could just do what I do and join Lovefilm - that costs me £18.00/month and I get at least 4 or 5 games every month that I can keep for as long as I want, and I tell youse what: that's saved me spunking out £30+ on some right stinkers. |

Yeah....the trouble is that I want F1 and Forza 4 for the long haul, as I know a few guys who will be playing them online weekly for months to come. Plus if Skyrim is anything like Oblivion, I'll be putting well over a hundred hours into it. It's not like I won't get my monies worth to be honest Plus I'm single so do have time to dedicate to getting a lot out of the games I buy. I must admit that after the buggy piece of shit that was F1 2010, I am tempted to hold off on buying that one for a few weeks though. Shit....forgot one other game, which looks more and more amazing with each new trailer. Saints Row 3!!! Edited by Retrovertigo, Sep 14 2011, 10:44 PM.

Is there a newer trailer for SR3 than the one with the jet plane and people-launcher? The prob I always had with SR 1+2 was the fucking awful framerates and car handling... |

Bodycount A total mess. Messy levels, messy, blendy-inny enemies that just seem to appear by magic everywhere. Gave up. Driver SF A total ode to 70's and 80's car chase movies and TV shows...in other words, an ode to things I was utterly obsessed with back in the day. Love it, but really pissed off that the Director Mode isn't even as good as it was in Drivthreeer. Director Mode is literally the thing that I've wanted to exist since I first got into videogames....oh well, maybe one day they'll get it right. Keep all your modern cars and leave me with Chevy Chevelles and Trans Ams and I'll be happy! Oh and also Call of Juarez The Cartel - too early to tell probably but shit so far! http://driver-club.uk.ubi.com/xbox/replays Go to the above link and see my clip - it's "Trans AM" by Juz. Actually in the "Highest Rated" section at the mo. Edited by Juz, Sep 18 2011, 11:31 AM.

That's shame, I hoped Bodycount would be good, I guess it needed to arrive before Bulletstorm as it was always going to get splattered in comparision. Finished Warhammer 40k Space Marine (360) and was glad it was over in the end. Too repetitive in the gameplay department and very predictable. Satisfying combat but there's just too much of it. Never as epic as it appeared to be and too many invisible walls. Resistance 3 (PS3) another decent game with a sizeable campaign that I was glad to see the back of, R3 fails to do anything new unless you badly wanted another CoD-alike perk-filled MP shooter to play, which it does very well, maybe even better than Killzone 3. Probably the greyey-brownish game of the year. Dead Island (360) - seem to have run into a bit of a wall with this, as all missions I have left seem too hard (all rated as 'hard' or 'very hard') to do on my own and playing as sporadically on as I have to it's hard to get in a good sesh with a good party. Gears of War 3 (360) - Well here it is, the first proper "triple A" title of the year. A cracking campaign story that made me whoop, laugh and almost cry too. Great visuals are backed up by tweaked gameplay, the AI is still all over the place but it all ends up producing some of the best shooter/melee combat I've played. Stunning lighting, explosions and attention to detail. The new Horde mode has raised the survival co-op MP mode bar that I imagine only Halo and CoD can come close. Still don't really rate the adversarial MP but that's probably because I'm so crap at it. F1 2011 (PS3 & 360) was informed by some numbnut that the PS3 version was much better but it ain't - they both look superb. Having just played F1 2010 last week I can safely say that this looks smoother and handles better. Mouthwateringly, I can control a lot of powerslides that I would have lost last year...my first time trial at Monaco was rewarded with the "Have you tried DiRT3?" achievement for a 10 metre power slide! It has all the Kers DRS, FBI, MFI etc and they make a noticeable difference, though you need to be careful they don't distract you. The game sounds better too - engines even more raucous and realistic. Already noticed a weird glitch with the rear jack when you return to the pit (in garage). Hard to believe they missed it. ICO & Shadow Of The Colossus HD (PS3) - started ICO yesterday and was amazed just how good it looks. I confirms to me though, that a lot of the games we're playing right now are just HD PS2 games. It's hard to believe ICO was released in 2002,and there really is no game like it, SotC had the same ambiance but had a different feel altogether. They provide you with a massive castle to explore and escape from, a stubborn, seemingly suicidal princess to save and let you get on with it - no on-screen prompts, instructions, nothing. Haunting and brilliant. |
