I have been playing this for most of the day today, and it's a really good game. For the most part.

The amosphere is incredible, the amount going on, and all the noise, gunfire, shouting etc is awesome, and it really gives a great feeling of being in a battle. The levels so far seem really good, and differ from Cod2 which is cool. Controls seems tight, it plays well, and the 60fps display is lovely.

Bad things? The game has more sticky/glitchyness than CoD2 did, getting stuck on walls, on objects on the floor stopping you from moving back if a grenade has landed and its too late to throw it back. AI gets in the way, and usually go and stand where you wanted to go. When you want to move around quickly, they are a pain in the ass to get past.

I think the driving sections (Jeep) are poor, and its just too icky and doesn't work well with the game. Perhaps if they were done better and the controls were tuned abit more it would be cool, but right now I don't really like them. Tank stuff is cool though, but the rowing? Fuck off. The QTE stuff like setting bombs and the 1st person fights are OK, but not really needed tbh, especially the fighting stuff - what is that all about huh?

So overall, yeah I am enjoying this, and I do think its a good game, but it doesn't have the polish that the launch game CoD2 had, regarding glitchyness.

Yup - it's not as good as CoD2, despite looking really beautiful.

There's some decent physics mish-mashed with piss-poor physics: witness me blowing a German into the air avec grenade, only for him to land ON the river nearby as if it was made of glass.

I guess this is the trade off with 60fps (there was me thinking that "Next Gen" would mean 60fps AND amazing lighting/physics), as Saints Row has awesome physics and lighting....and a piss-poor framerate.

Is Gears Of War gonna pull all of this back from the brink? Can you imagine the backlash if THAT has some bugs/glitchiness? BTW - there's a whopper thread over on the AV Forums about game-fucking bugs in CoD3...not good, is it?

EDIT: Oh for the love of fucking God!!!! Me pausing the game whilst typing the above caused that weird "clicking" sound from the DVD drive upon restart, and then being booted back to the Dashboard.

I was always an apologist for the 360 and its many issues, but now I'm really starting to get fucking pissed off.

Much as I loved COD2, I think I'm going to give COD3 a miss. :(

Just completed the single player campaign on Normal setting. It was good, the final chapter is fantastic, yes yes overall it is good. But FFS the glichyness, sticky floors/walls/team mates and the shit team AI ruin it all for me. It wouldn't be a problem if you didn't die as a result of the gravel ground locking you in place, but you do 90% of the time. Try to move away from gunfire and you get stuck in place. Takes the piss. On top of this, online mode is fucked AGAIN. What has happened to XBox Live, its a right mess. Ranked matches don't work, game locks up, bugs up, hangs, resets etc etc. Sigh.

I can see why 1UP gave it 6.5/10 now...

Just finished Gears Of War t'other day with Zed and it's my Game Of The Year, no doubt. As for what ISN'T my GOTY:

Call Of Duty 3

Starting to fucking despise it in places. Sticky scenery, plus a supernatural ability of the Krauts to shoot me either through veils of smoke or scenery itself coupled with some dodgy checkpoints is making this a bit of a piece of shit.

EDIT: Plus various bits of downed enemies appearing through solid objects and invisible barriers dotted around the place, making it 100% linear, despite appearances to the contrary.

Gears of War
I am only about halfway through, but I am really liking this game. Not just the visuals, but just the way it plays feel good, even reloading is a fun challenge.
As a first game I have played on the 360, it does make me want to play more similar games, so I am looking forward to Lost Planet.

Test Drive Unlimited
This feels like GTA:SA without the fighting. Just being able to drive about in fast cars and pick and choose what missions to do is so much fun. I can see it getting a bit repititive after a while, but so far so good.

Viva Pinata

My first gardening sim (unless you count Animal Crossing) and a return to form of sorts from Rare.

I was expecting this to be a leisurely game where you spend hours perfecting your garden in the hope of encouraging the pinata to visit.

In reality this is a fairly stressful game where the little buggers infest your garden from the beginning and make a nuisance of themselves shagging, fighting and eating each other.

It's exactly what I had in mind but I think it'll be a grower (geddit?)

Oh, and add absolutely piss-poor "AI" from your teammates in COD3 to the shit-list; I stood by and watched ~20 unfortunate retards walk directly into a hail of MG42 bullets on many, many occasions - it woulda been funny if it wasn't so irritating - and when they're NOT getting mown down like so much grass they're putting the back of their heads right in your line of fire.

Crap :(

Multiplayer on this is not only good fun but also relaxing. It is the only Arcade trial I have played so far that has convinced me to buy the full game.

Half-Life 2 - Episode One

I was planning to wait for the 360 version to come out but I cracked over the Xmas break and 'Steamed' it for around a tenner in our money.

Despite the fact the performance of the game on my PC goes from fantastic to awful every 5 minutes, I've been loving every second of this chapter (Which going by the reported gameplay time is definitely the way to go about things)

The characters are so darn believable and you genuinely care about what happens to them. The dialogue's well written and the gameplay is top notch.

Can't recommend it enough if you've not played it yet.

After the godawful experience I had with HL2 on my PC, I'll be waiting for the 360 bundle - hopefully, any temperamental issues will have been eliminated as it's on a unified platform.

It's pretty depressing, isn't it?

It SHOULD work, and it's got some truly beautiful looks, and the battles COULD be awesome...but it just doesn't seem to gel does it?

And once you factor in the genuine problems (shite AI, sticky scenery, smoke not actually working etc. etc.) it actually becomes a 5 or 6 out of 10 game.

I can't comment about the online aspect as I've still yet to try it, but I don't think that even an astounding online aspect can make up for a totally shit single player experience if that's what you bought the game for primarily.

Devil May Cry 3 Special Edition

Managed to pick this and Delta Force: BHD something or other for £25. Devil May Cry is pretty good, I thought it was going to be a real struggle to get into it but the controls are pretty spot on. This is the first DMC I've actually played. My only gripe with these is when you change screen and the camera flips round - if you hold the direction you were going then you walk straight back into the other screen. Very frustrating.

I'm going through it on the normal mode with Dante and it's rock hard but I refuse to drop it to the easy mode just because I'm awkward like that. Should keep me going though.

Delta force is a bit meh. We'll see how it goes. I was going to get Shadow of the Colossus but it was £25 preowned which I thought was a bit steep for a game that could be in any sort of condition. Call me a tightarse if you want but these are the only games I've bought this year and I'm not making a habit of it :P

Rainbow Six: Vegas - Xbox 360

I like this. :)

It looks good. The indoor sections look nothing like as good as the outdoor bits, but pretty good.

More importantly, it plays really well. The cover system doesn't work quite as well as Gears, but I think that having it mapped to the left trigger (and not getting glued to objects) makes me prefer Rainbow. The single player has a story, with team and solo bits, but as there's little characterisation you don't really get any emotional link to any of the characters. It plays pretty well though - I found playing on 'realistic' a bit of a chore to be honest thanks to some oddly spaced checkpoints, but knocking the difficulty back down to normal found me really enjoying the game.

The multiplayer works great, aside from the lack of matchmaking. I'm yet to try out the co-op story, but the co-op terrorist hunts are an absolute hoot, even with just two of you - working together to simultaneously burst into a terrorist-packed room from different entrances and confuse said terrorists is very satisfying. The AI certainly helps - they're evil buggers, and no two terrorist hunts are ever the same.

Multiplayer versus is also excellent - I'm not really a fan of the deathmatch mode, although the team version is alright. The team objective based stuff is excellent though (steal the briefcase/rescue the hostages etc) - takes me back to the Wolfenstein days.

Also - it's £29.99 on play.com.
