I'll never get Diddly's posts. After his little rant about Skyrim earlier I was ready to call the police - I'd seen him playing it constantly so assumed someone was sat holding a gun to his head :)

Well I've gone and done it again, bought an RPG when I don't really have the time or patience for one.

Of course I'm talking about Skyrim. I held off for a couple of weeks, but it's tough when all your mates are talking so glowingly about their experiences.

Only a few hours in, and I must admit I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed by the scale. The setting is wonderful, but am I alone in finding it a bit too dark at night?

Also the combat seems skittish, especially when attacked my multiple combatants. I find myself attacking the scenery rather than the enemy on far too many occasion, and when it ends in death it can be frustrating.

Early days though, I'm expecting to clock up some serious game-time over the xmas break.

I never find it dark as I'm a wizardycunt with Candlelight and Mage Light...oh and a new Staff Of Light thing wot some old Wizard's Sleeve gave to me.

The only way I can cope without guns is by having loads of evil spells!

One of the things I love about Skyrim is that night time actually feels like night time. Far too many games have a night setting but let you see far too easily. As Juz has said though, you get skills, potions etc etc that can enable you to see better at night. Personally I usually go for a stealthy character anyway - using a bow as my weapon of choice. That way at night I sneak around and can hear things long before they can see me.

Yeah, night time does feel different. I happened upon two women in a fight with a vampire woman in the middle of the night.

I'm now a paid up member of the Thieves Guild cos I got sick of not being able sell my many stolen items.

OK so Skyrim is baffling me.

Granted I'm no RPG aficionado, but it seems as though following the main quest is a futile exercise even though the game naturally pushes you in that direction.

I've been chatting to some of the forum peeps on Eurogamer and they're all telling me to ignore the main narrative and spend in excess of 40-60 hours just doing my own thing and leveling up through exploration and side-quests.

One bloke has put in over 70 hours and not even tackled the third mission on the main quest.

I'm just not sure if that constitutes as fun. I like to feel as though I'm making progress after every session, yet last night I spent over an hour milling around with very little to show for my efforts. Maybe I'm just not cut out for this pace of game :-/

Well I don't mean to sound rude, but Morrowind, Oblivion, and two Fallouts came before this game, and all follow the same template of pratting around being a bigger part of the game than the main story.

I'm amazed you could have come into this game with no knowledge of the investment needed in order to get the maximum from a game like this :/

Having said that, many many side quests can be done very easily at the start of the game - just spend a while speaking to a fair few people and then go off on your merry way to whatever caves, forts or locations they ask you to go to and kick some ass :) It is easy to check the map and see which quests involve the least traveling to get to.

Yeah, you might have chosen the wrong game dude.

Seriously, I was at 100+ hours on Fallouts 3 and NV before I even contemplated finishing em off.

If it hasn't clicked with you by now, it probs never will...I find myself just never going near the main quests on Skyrim; I just get sidetracked all the time - last night I was doing finishing off a long side quest to get a special gem for trapping human souls, and getting my Archery skillz ramped up too.

Don't despair though dude - I simply couldn't get into Oblivion no matter how much I played it and abandoned it after a handful of hours.

Well I'm not giving up on it just yet, but I guess I do like my games to have a bit of structure.

Maybe if I forget the quest I'll enjoy it more. It just seemed odd that the game would direct you to tasks that you had no chance of completing at your current level.

This is gonna sound dumb, but don't forget: you can (and should sometimes) lower the difficulty at ANY time....

But...there is a real nice side to this game - an example of this would be a cave that had a load of bug/slug things in it that I just could NOT get through....so I fucked off for a bit, did a bit of this and that, got a companion, went back and kicked their mothafuckin asses.

I think this game is like knitting or something.

EDIT: Whilst we're talking Skyrim; do yourselves a MASSIVE favour and check out "Parker Play's [sic]" Skyrim videos on Youtube - the guy is just absolutely fucking hilarious. Particularly "Part 14 - Mammoths".....funniest thing I've heard in years.

Who is the 12 year-old who posted this on the old lady's ID?

"Hilarious"? "funniest thing I've heard in years"? :jawdrop:

This guy is your typical yank who thinks anything he says in a silly or loud voice is funny, and is almost certainly a stoner. And young un', don't you dare go watching that You've Been Framed , or you might split your sides. ^o) :P

What can I say? I quide liderally lol'd when I saw it. I thought he wasn't trying to be funny, just naturally so...plus I tend to jabber to myself when playing, so maybe he just made me feel less nerdy?

Oh well, *I* liked it. [tongue]
