On Sunday (well, officially Monday I think), Microsoft let out that they're starting a community games development program for the 360 and Windows. First of all, they're giving away their hobbyist game development platform - XNA Game Studio Express. That will help you create games that can run on Windows, or the 360. However, to run your written code on the 360 you have to pay them a $99/year subscription. But with that you will be able to run anyone's unsigned code on the 360, and participate in a hobbyist games dev community, with the chance that MS will snap up your game and publish it on Live for everyone to buy, earning them and you a nice chunk of cash. Boring press release: http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2...meStudioPR.mspx Interesting XNA team blog: http://blogs.msdn.com/xna/ According to all that they'll be sharing source code for games too to help people get started. The only current catch is there's no distribution method for compiled 360 games - I presume that people will have to compile sourcecode themselves to be able to play someone else's game on the 360, although according to the blog above they intend to fix that asap. Now, personally I think this is actually pretty damn cool. If you're a saddo like me, you've always dreamed of being able to write your own games. The fact is that unless you're exceedingly driven and lucky (like the guys that made Uplink/Darwinia) the bedroom coding scene has been dead for about 10 years, aside from modding. I've seen some pretty interesting previews for forthcoming Arcade games, such as Small Arms (http://www.360-live.co.uk/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=693&Itemid=59) and HoopWorld (http://www.hoopworldgame.com/index.php), and I thought that it would probably be a good way for people to unleash their creative juices, but just being able to develop a game on your tod is superb. I can easily see me paying up the $99 just to play other stuff that people have put together. Anyone else? |

$99 = approx. £55 = not much more than XBL subscription or one *full* price game - per annum - for loads of stuff - expect emulators - Oh! Speccy emulator! Using the 360 pad to play JetPac - soon, I hope! |

I wouldn't shell out immediately, but I would if emulators began to appear. I hate playing games on my PC, so have never bothered with the retro scene there, but I would if I could play old games on my telly like in the old days. |

I wondered about emulators, or rather, what is to stop people from producing emus, because I would expect that MS would stomp very hard on that sort of thing. But I don't know yet. Frankly most retro stuff just hurts my eyes (hello Street Fighter II Hyper Fighting), and I'm more excited about the original stuff that this will enable. |
