...and it's a bit special by all accounts. I was kinda hoping that Gears of War would be the only game I'd need to buy this year for my 360. |

Its GRAW meets Rainbow six with all the GRAW probs seemingly eliminated (thats if you accept the slow down and frame drops as a feature of the demo) The way cover used though is MILES better than GRAW and it sounds lovely Oh and tactics can be used to good effect |

Yeah I had a good play of this yesterday and I'm delighted - especially as DC, Jocky and me will have something to play together again while we put the world to rights. Hopefully this'll put the memories of the AWFUL R6 Lockdown and GRAW's crappy half-assed co-op missions firmly in the past. |

Yup, this is nice, the question is whether I'll want to buy CoD3 too now... And yup, this will get used online quite a lot - my new dsl connection doesn't seem to upset Ubi games too much too, which is nice. |

Who have you gone for with your dsl connection, Jocky? I'm getting pissed off with Pipex and their "give new customers the best deal and leave longstanding customers on slow connections" policy! |

Fuck me, this is really rather good. I am surprised after GRAW and the last Rainbow, but this could well be the proper, true sequel to Black Arrow. And shit. Gears of War and Rainbow Six: Vegas. It really is like waiting for a damn bus sometimes That's of course unless 'Gears is just a shoot, duck, shoot, duck, shoot affair, but the co-op can be no worse than PDZ, huh?

I wouldn't bet on the coop being any good - I've heard reps for the game being very apologetic about it being a single player experience primarily. And Zai, I'm with the Free Software Network - www.ukfsn.org I pay £30 a month, but I'm on a primo business connection with better upload bandwidth and higher BT network priority, just so I could properly host XBL games. Data allowance is 30gb peak, 300 off peak, which is huge. I currently get a stable 5mbit connection down, with around 700k up. Getting the Tony Hawk demo took under 10 mins... |

May I enquire as to what's so good about it? Found it all very "meh" and jerktacular. |

Ditto. Not impressed by the demo (except graphics). Seemed very linear w.r.t. paths you could go, very dark (with GTABiker on this), and the stuff like the cover has been done before on games like Rogue Trooper etc. So whats so special? Personally i liked the original Rainbow Six, the planning stage thing really set it apart as being tactical, and differentiated it from all the other 3rd/FPSs out there. As it was so open-choiced you could assault a building any way you wanted; roof, main door, side doors whatever, and it was genuinely fun planning all the moves and room sweeps and letting the AI run things and not firing a shot yourself. For a nextgen title Vegas forcing you to use that particular rapeling point, and not that one or that one, is pretty poor. Maybe i want to go thru the ground floor and not helio onto the roof? So i'm being serious when i ask whats so good compared to any other tactical shooter out there? |

I am not sure how many of the more recent Rainbow Six games you have played ('3, Black Arrow), but the game isn't really a tactical shooter any more. Sure, you have the team direction thing were you can tell your men to go there, hold, fire at will, go in this room, take out those two specific guys, but its a long way off from the what the series started as on PC. If its a console tactical shooter you want, you may want to check out Full Spectrum Warrior out, as that as all tactical setting up etc. Not really my thing tbh, but Deadly seemed to love it. Since the series moved to console (Rainbow Six) it had pretty much all the pre-game tactical stuff taken out, because most (console) gamers will find that sort of stuff boring. As for linear paths, well thats how they wanted to take the series, you can generally have tighter level design when you control where the player can and cannot go. The only really open choices in the console 'Rainbows is what door you want to enter to any given room. From the demo, I thought VEGAS was well back on track to the superb Black Arrow, with decent level design, and more realistic (although still fantasy) health system over the laughable Lockdown. The 3rd person stuff worked better than GRAW too. Personally, I thought it went into 3rd person when it didn't need to at times, such as climbing ladders, but it does seem to work pretty well, and the game in general plays very nicely too. The controls were good, if a little over whelming at first, and the pace of the game was back on track again too. As long as they sort the shitty framerate out and give us a decent online co-op mode, I think it will be a very popular game when it comes out next month. |

Well for a start I think it looks fantastic and the cover mode/third person switches work well. The AI, ragdoll and physics are also way in advance of anything Rainbow has seen before and you can, at last, use downed enemies' weapons. Unlike GRAW I didn't have any of my guys walk in front of me for no apparent reason, or get shot dead by the bad guys like some hopeless rookie (as constantly happened in GRAW). Oh, and console versions of Rainbow never had the planning stages, it's all been dumbed down (and the set rappeling points are another indication of how much more of this we can expect) almost as much as Recon. But the best part about it was that on my 3 play-throughs it didn't crash or lock up on me, which was nice - and extremely rare for a 360 game or demo. As for the dark thing - I think the lighting is superb, a mixture of harsh lighting and deep shadows that really works, but then I spent some time adjusting the contrast on my TV to suit when the first 360 game I played appeared dark to me - but then again, it doesn't get used for watching programmes so maybe they'd all look too bright and glarey - who knows? - I think the whole HD/aspect ratio thing is a joke, games developers and the TV companies themselves don't know what the fuck they're doing.
It's a tactical shooter (well kind of) on the 360 that appears to work, so that's makes it unique as far as I'm aware. We'll have to wait and see how the multiplayer, net code and voice coms hang together though won't we...? |
