I've been contemplating investing in a number of retro consoles, namely a DC and Neo Geo AES or CDZ with a view to building a collection over time. This has in some way been triggered by those profiles of collectors in the retro section of Games TM. However each time I consider a bid on eBay I chicken out. I think this is because: a/ I used to own a DS and would be re-buying a lot of the games (Mrs Blakey would have a fit if she knew) b/ Finding and buying a Neo Geo in good condition isn't exactly an impulse purchase. c/ I worry that the Neo Geo will disappoint me. It was the console that no-one could afford but everyone wished they had when I was a lad. Have the games aged well? Is anyone else a retro collector on these boards? Is it anything more than a five minute wonder for someone with rose-tinted specs? |

Do PSOne games make your eyes bleed? If so, then don't do it. I had a nostalgic foray into Gran Turismo a while ago after playing Forza, PGR3 and GT4 for a while - Eeeek! I think that I've succumbed to the viral infection that is Graphics Whoredom™. |

Well I think on a graphical level, DS games still hold up well and some of my favourite gaming moments come from that console. The NeoGeo is somewhat of an unknown quantity to me. One of those consoles that I keep reading is a 'must-have' for serious gamers, but it'll cost all of 100 notes to get one. |

Seriously, and this is very important, if you're going to get a Neo Geo system, really really really try to avoid the CDZ. The load times on the games were absolutely unbelivable, and put 360 and PSP games to shame. The original CDZ launched in Japan with a single speed drive, and later got revised to a dual speed drive like Sega Saturn and PlayStation. However, even then the load times were disgraceful. On games like King of Fighters '95, you were looking at well over a minute from the point of choosing your character to actually loading the stage and fighting. In-between rounds there were load screens, and in-between stages there were even longer ones. If you want a Neo Geo, and have deep pockets, you need the AES system. It's very, very expensive, or at least the games are, but its a much better experience than the CDZ. A cheaper alternative would be to pick up a Super Famicom (Japanese version of the Super Nintendo). Some of the best games of all time are that system, as I am sure yo are fully aware, and alot cheaper than the Neo Geo (obviously). AVOID a PAL Super Nintendo. Also check out a Japanese Mega Drive, some stella titles on that too. Moving into the future, a Japanese Sega Saturn holds some amazing games that simply were never released in PAL land. If you love 2d vert shooters and 2d fighting games, its an awesome system. Also take a look at a Japanese PlayStation (1), as there are many, many classics on that, and quite a few that again were not released over here. Further into the future, get yourself a Dreamcast... PAL will do as you can use a swop disc to - you guessed it - buy and play the far, far superior Japanese selection of games on the system. The big games got released on PAL, and 99% of them had 60hz so are worth checking out which is nice. Even nicer is if you have a local GameStation, you'll be able to find some games for about £3. Daytona USA 2001 for the fucking win. I would go in carefully whatever you do, and don't piss away a few hundred pounds until you're fully sure you want to get into it. Some games are amazing to this day, but some have not aged well and you might very well struggle to enjoy them again. Personally, I'd get hold of MAME for your PC/Mac/Xbox1, and see if you enjoy the games still. That way you might not potentially waste a shit load of cash on games that get played for a day then you shelve. |

Yeah, you can Mame most of the Neo Geo stuff, so decide whether you want one from the games you want to play. It's all 2D fighters and side scrolling shmups, although Samurai Shodown 2... mmmmm. As DC points out, you can get some really wacky Japanese stuff for a few quid, so instead of going holy grail hunting, why not get a few bonkers things instead? |

Consider getting a GP32 or GP2X, they can emulate countless systems. a handheld emulator is really cool.. both my Wife and I have one. |

Cheers for all the advice. I think I'm going to plump for a PAL DC and see if I can pick up as many classics as possible in mint condition. Particularly looking forward to revisiting Shenmue and playing the sequel for the first time. |
