hi guys.

ok the missus has told me she'll buy me one of three things for xmas.

1:- a psp

2:- a ds

3:- a ps2

Tbh I'd much rather have a GP2X but thats not on the list :(

Now I've had a ds and I wasn't happy with it tbh, so I got rid. so thats out. as for the psp. well if it had a good homebrew software base like the gp32 has then I'm
interested, what I don't want to do is buy games for that instead of my 360.

That leaves the ps2... now I am really tempted to get one of these again, I can see lots of nice cheap titles for it at my local gamestation. Including some nice rpg's. but my worry is the ps3. I guess the ps2 will die a quick death when the ps3 hits.

so my question (finally), does the ps2 still have a long shelf live? and you psp
owners.. can you run emulators on it?

There is a huge back catelog for the PS2, and while this/last gen, some really great titles in all genres. Not a bad choice, but if you've any graphic-whore tendancies at all the load times etc will start to grate... Oh Guitar Hero 1/2 - totally worth buying a PS2 for! :ph43r:

PSP can do homebrew, i ran SNES and C64 emulators for quite a while, and Sony and the hacker/homebrewers are in a constant fight. Currently (10/11/06) there is a hack which got released two days after Sony's last firmware and GTA: Vice City Stories  and uses "Dev hook" to do various stuff. Someone else has recently made a special 2.71 firmware that lets you run all 1.5 homebrew (so possibly spoofing 2.81) and any UMDs up to 2.71, plus ISOs and so on.

Personally i found it a bit of bother, dont do piracy, and so have been keeping super current. But if you *cough* want to avoid licencing laws then the PSP has options.

I didnt get on with my DS Lite either and have given it away.

Why can't you get a GP2X?

Love my DS Lite and I would have thought that there's a broad enough catalog for any taste, but if you've tried it and didn't like it then fair enough.

Very meh about the PSP - just seems like a lot of gimped console software.

Oh yeah, and Guitar Hero 2 is coming out for the 360 early in the new year.

Seriously considering a GP2X myself as an xmas pressie.

Mainly for the emulation scene and possibly a bit of coding on the demo scene if I get time.

Simply because with all our other xmas stuff and pressies for other people, she doesn't have £150 cash. and the ps2 and psp are in her catalogue :/

tbh I'm 90% for the ps2 simply because of the amount of games you can got for it for almost sod all. also theres some good rpg's for it.. thats about it... would still prefer a gp2x ;)

If your lady-friend can't find £150 for a gaming xmas pressie then maybe you nedd to re-evaluate your relationship ;)

I'm currently in the process of pimping out my own girlfriend in order to fund a growing present wishlist. If anyone's interested in ANY type of service then please post a reply. Shs has no shame at all! :o

Can you not put a bit of cash towards a Gp2X to help? I know its not strictly in keeping with the whole gift idea but thats what i'm gonna have to do this year if I end up getting a Wii.

Well for some "decent" advice - get a PS2 if you like RPG's - or get a PSP if you like emulation. Most run at pretty much full speed now and there are a plethora of other homebrew apps available. I personally use mine as a notepad reader (and fuck all else these days) and have it sat by me with walkthroughs displayed on it if I am playing a bitch of an RPG.

But personally I'd get an Xbox for any emu stuff and play it on a big screen. But that's just me. For stuff on the go I'd say get a PSP if you really don't want a DS again (get a G6lite - you may change your mind) and get any emu's up and running on that - plus have the choice of any decent PSP games (hahahaha) that may come out!.

Didn't Edge say the GP2X has an absolutely shit battery life?

If you use normal AA batteries, but if you use some good rechargables (1500mah up) they last just as good as anyother handheld.
