120GB drive and an HDMI port with cable. And it's black. Only for an extra $80 over the normal unit in the US. Not announced worldwide prices, but I expect £329.99 here.

120GB drive will be sold stand alone for $179.99.

Considering that you can buy a 2.5" 120GB HDD for under £55 (£20 more than the smallest, cheapest drive you can get - 40GB at £35) I think that's fucking steep, although outside of the US I don't think there's any need for a big drive yet as there's no content you can download to make use of it.

Don't think the HDMI port will make a difference to most people either. Meh.

Still, some fantastic backtracking comments from Microsoft's director for platform marketing for Xbox 360:

Quote:

Speaking with Albert Penello, director for global platform marketing for the Xbox 360, earlier today I asked him why, after months of saying that an HDMI output was unnecessary for high-def gaming, was Microsoft now releasing a console with the port.

...

"That's a good question," he said. "I think what's interesting is that we have proven the point. One of the reasons we talked about that at the beginning was we were competing with a bunch of empty promises. We said 1080p can be done through analog, the picture quality isn't any better on HDMI, and I think we proved that."

" I don't think (HDMI) is necessary, it's not necessary to give a high-def experience," he said. "The HDMI decision was partially something that we have been thinking about how we were going to introduce. And now that there are a lot of televisions that have HDMI, we felt the time was right."

Proven what point? You skimped on HDMI to save a few quid and now that people are buying PS3s to go with their shiny new LCD screens you're having to backtrack?

I've said it before on the speculation thread for this "Elite" model:

MS should not be altering the spec on a console this much - at this rate, we're gonna end up with consoles becoming completely pc-like with constant upgrades - what's the fuckin point of that? One of THE main attractions of a console is that the spec stays fixed for its lifespan. OK, so none of these additions/changes will affect how games run (or will they?), but nobody wants to think that they've got the "cheapest" version of AV hardware, do they? And nobody wants to get to the stage where they'll wait 2-3 years after a console is launched for the spec to finally settle down.

Dumb.

Seems like a complete white, sorry black elephant to me.

Who is going to buy one and why? Unless Microsoft are really stupid they cant start focusing on performance and games that use a lot of hard drive space otherwise the Core owners are gonna be furious (in fact anyone who has bought one of the previous 'underpowered' 360's).

Just spend a bit more and buy a PS3 to complement your Xbox360. And if I was only gonna buy one console from scratch it would be the PS3 not this, which incidently you CAN add a new hard drive to if you like.

Ridiculous and somewhat worrying and proves what I though all along- the 360 was rushed out.

Add a new hard drive to your PS3? How do you do that, and what drives does it take?

The 'Core' unit is a problem now, because everything is constrained by it. They created it because the hard drive in the previous Xbox cost them a lot of money, and there was no way of providing Gigabytes of storage and having a low cost unit. I presume Sony expect to go down the solid state route in a few years, meanwhile MS will come to market with the Xbox 3 within 3 years in my opinion.

I have read people using third party hard drives for the PS3 on a lot of forums and seen a few bits of info on it like this-

http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/home-entertainm...-can-233445.php

Dont ask me for any details cos I havent got a facking clue when it comes to fiddling around with hardware

If Microsoft come out with another generation Xbox within 3 years they want shooting in my opinion.

The Sony instructions that come with the PS3 tell you how to change it B) People have put quite big drives in, plus USB HDDs also work with it.

Not sure about this "Elite", diety(s) what a name  , and overall seems barely worth it unless you must have 1080p and HDMI. If the rumoured £350 price is true i really cant see people buying this unless they are ardent Bill's butt-boys / anti-Sony.

Still compition is good, i'd hate to see a monoploy by anyone currently.

The Elite is apparently out here in November. Makes sense, as that's when MS is planning to launch the IPTV service in Europe.

The November launch of the Elite model in the UK is pure speculation. Nothing has been mentioned or confirmed by Microsoft.

FART...frrrrrp!!
