Morning All One for the PSP boffins. Having played through a fair few PSP games I am now searching around for something new. What I really fancy, is a bit of Final Fantasy VIII. Now I know that this is technically achievable, I'm just not sure of: (a) how (B) how likely it is I will destroy my PSP forever in the process. Is there anyone who can point me in the right direction? My current firmware is 3.50 (if that is the most recent update bar one) and I do have both Lumines (for the hack) and a FF VIII original PS disc. How I go forwards from here is a mystery... Any input whatsoever gratefully received. I've resisted homebrew up till now but the possibilities are too enticing too ignore. Cheers Opti |

If I remember rightly whilst FFVIII does work with custom firmware it also crashes when using a certain spell. They may have managed to fix this with the latest custom firmware but I'm not sure. FFVII works fine though as I've played pretty much all the way through ditto Resident Evil 2. As Dunc says dcemu is probably your best bet. |

sheesh... The more I read the more complicated it gets... Have checked Dunc's links which are all good but nowhere is there a straight A-B guide for downgrading to 1.50, installing the OE (3.4 apparently) and then installing the relevant program to run the PSX games. Not to mention ripping them in the first place. Then there is the issue that FFVIII is multi disc (need to label the 4 discs the same), is glitchy as you say Pedro (but depending on which ID code you enter this can be cleared up), plus my general fears about bricking the PSP... I know this is all part and parcel of installing firmware/software and of course the net is full of dead ends and dodgy info, but I think I have lost my nerve on this one... |

Mate If you use the Lumines trick its quite easy Once you have downloaded the downgrader from the noobz site and read the read me file contained its rather straightforward In fact the most trouble I had was renaming a file - kept calling it wrong name |

I'm one of those people that generally does alright with this sort of stuff. I've had the odd scare updating drivers and installing stuff onto PCs but generally no real scares. With this though, whilst I have seen (with your help) plenty of sites offering tutorials, there are too many elements I feel unsure of. EG, I keep reading about certain motherboards being unsuitable for downgrading and I can't even figure out which MB I have. I've seen sites where they tell you how to check but now can't find them again...My head is swimming with this stuff. Plus, I cannot for the life of me work out if I will be able to get back to official firmware in the future. GOW II is on the horizen and I want to be able to play that at some point. If Sony would just hurry up and make PSX games available through official channels then I could probably play FF VIII anyway and save myself the worry! WIll sleep on it and see if develop the balls to give this a shot tomorrow. Opti |

Update - I do have the Mobo that prevents returning (for now at least) to official Sony firmware. That plus one of the tutorials saying you can only have one save game for all of your iso's (correct?) and references to hex editors and "multiple discs where you can simply increment the disc ID by 1" has put paid to my attempts... Thanks for the input though guys.

Sorry to hear that mate. To be honest I was terrified at messing with the firmware because I don't have a clue when it comes to anything techy. I've downgraded a couple of PSP's and 'touch wood' no problems as of yet. As for the one save game for all your ISO's - If I'm hearing you right I don't think that's the case. I've had more then one game on the go at a time and haven't had any problems. When (not if) they manage to solve the motherboard problem I'd definitely change to a custom firmware if I were you. |

Have either of your games been multi disc like FF8? I still want to do this but am finding it difficult to gauge just how much of a performance it will be to get this particular game running. |

Visit the forums at www.maxconsole.com for everything you need to know about your PSP and getting various games working. The save game I.D only refers to multi-disc games like ffvii. What you need to do is make sure that each image you make for your psp (of ffvii for example) have the same i.d so that the save game is recognised bewteen each disc swap. This doesn't affect how many games you can have on your psp at once, not does it affect how many save games you can have at once. FFVIII works I believe, but there is a trick using some data or other from Resi 3, or something along those lines. It all sounds complicated, but in fact it isn't. The hardest part is downgrading your machine - and even that is easy. Go for it and blow the cobwebs off your PSP edit: almost forgot something. Once you have downgraded, you don't need extra programmes to run psone games, that's all part and parcel of the firmware. All you need is a small app for converting psone games, and even that uses a nice neat gui that makes everything just a few clicks away. As I say, the site mentioned above has sections for everything you need. |
