Demo out on XBLA - I'm downloading now, and it's a Big Daddy at 1.3GB.

This is the first I'll have seen of Bioshock in action - I saw a few screenies at the beginning of the year, but that's been about it.

PC demo later this month apparently.

It's taking it's time this one... only 25% done in the past 35 mins.

Think going to leave the demo

Getting such good things said about it and I loved Deus Ex, System Shock 2, Oblivion and HL2 (all of which seem to get mentioned someplace with this) that I am going to wait for the full thing

You've trained Liz to download stuff from XBL?!!! How? When? Where? :o :o

She's been doing it for ages - did Stranglehold last week too.

Tres handy!

Yes. Although I shut it off after a very short time because...

To put this into context, I'd just completed The Darkness, and was speculative as to whether I wanted another FPS in the next few weeks, let alone right now.

... the setting, the tone and the detail of the environment has me completely in love with this game. I shut the demo off just after seeing a Big Daddy for the first time so that I don't spoil anything for myself when I get the game proper.

Can't wait.

Yeah, I put mine on a bit after you, and found that it cut out several times. But after a couple of reboots I eventually got it about 7 last night. I got Stranglehold - which wasn't much smaller - in under half an hour.

Just ordered for £31.49 from ASDA online - it's £34.99 and for this week you can get an extra 10% off by using code ENT10 at checkout.

Apparantly the XBLA servers crashed due to massive demand when it was first released.

OK.

The Cabal Of Graphics Whores(tm) now has a new idol to worship at the feet of. Thy name is Bioshock.

This is almost unbelievably good-looking. I just sat and watched as water poured into a room, spread on the floor and then proceeded to rise, gradually obscuring some detritus on the floor. I also insisted on pushing a pram around to see if the shadow it cast was dynamic...it was.

My eyes may well have had their on petit mort a few times whilst playing this. The whole art deco thang just rocks so hard too, and to think that, according to Games(tm) last month this game was just gonna be set on a tropical island(!)

I have to say that I'm not 100% blown away by the actual gameplay, which is, I guess(!) kinda important, but it sure had oodles of atmos.

Just pissed off that this ain't on PS3 as it woulda meant I coulda blown the dust off it.

EDIT: Just thinking out loud here, but this demo was 1.35gb, right? There's ~9gb on a DVD...soooo...does that mean this is gonna be a titchy, short game, or is it to do with there being compression of some kind used in the final code?

They probably have to give you most of the graphics and physics engines, with textures/map/enemies being proportionately less, hence a 30 min game or 20 hour (as quoted by the devs) would need a chunk of space for the base stuff regardless.

Re graphic-whoring, some stuff looks great, but the lifts look ropey as, also if you look up as soon as getting out the bathesphere the big roof has jaggys everywhere. The pram when you first get the revolver dosent do dynamic lighting, walk around it and you dont cast a shadow.

I think some people (in the wider web) are gushing about "teh b3st g@me eVer" without really analysing it properly. I could pick holes in loads of places, but it IS only a demo, and really its nice just to sit back and enjoy the ride rather than checking every corner for tearing. Guess i'm just saying its got a level of hype which i believe is unwarranted at this point.

In other Bioshock news; Toy-R-Us has broken the street date, with gaymers getting their copies a week early! I pre-ordered a "limited edition tin" copy off GamePlay, hope it gets to me before Friday.
