I'm really not getting on with Bioshock - in fact, I'm on the verge of giving up on it. My main problem is the method the developers chose to tell the story - those tiny talking heads giving out random snatches of detail just aren't engaging, particularly as my gaming sessions are often days apart these days and so keeping track and trying to make sense of it all is nigh on impossible. As a result, the game, for me, consists of little more than trudging from one place to the next searching drawers for glinting objects (almost as tedious as scanning in Metroid Prime) and waiting for the next instruction from the talking head with the Blarney.

I think the point is, is the game works equally as well if you collect tham all as it does if you dont collect any

Each one adds snippets of the story and the ones that really do move story along are not really hidden

For me the story telling mechanism really aids the immersion.  I think I just prefer to be part of the story rather than shown it.

What was the last game you finished Zai?

Actually, if you look at Dunk's "Which games have you finished?" thread, you'll find that I've been finishing quite a few games this gen. The last was "The Darkness".

If your point is that if I don't like the way the story's told in Bioshock then I must have no attention span then you're wrong. I've been playing it almost non-stop since it came out... but my gaming sessions are quite spread out because of everything else that's going on at the moment and so threads of the story are forgotten quite easily. Maybe it's just the wrong game for me to play at the moment. That said, I think I might have got more immersed if they'd used full-on cutscenes for the diary entries, rather than the tiny talking heads and snatches of dialogue that you end up listening to on the fly. They just don't do it for me... I certainly don't feel part of the story. So shoot me dammit!

I don't think I agree with you on that. If you don't catch or "get" the back story, it's just another shooting game, which is why I'm getting tired of it.

Not at all. My point was that it 'worked' for me. Wandering around with the spooky audio diaries playing in the background added to the atmosphere for me. I would have watched a cut scene, but much more reluctantly.

Anyway, finished Bioshock this evening. Found that the game was longer than I was expecting, but I do explore every nook and cranny of the game world, and thought the difficulty on hard was very good. Probably should have been the normal difficulty.

Didn't save all the little sisters (I killed them all, muahahaahaa), and supposedly there's a different ending if I do, so I might go back and do that... maybe.

Yes some are hidden and some just tell the story of a few characters that you cross paths with, but the BIG ones that move the story along (espescailly in the last quarter of the game) are there for you to just find and pick up with little exploring

Think they work 100 times better than cut scenes, as you are never removed from the game and the story is told to you as if you are the central character

I always though this game would not be for everyone despite the universally good reviews.

The enjoyment of it was always going to depend upon how much you are sucked in by the exploration of the setting and the story because combat wise its pretty one track, despite all the modifications you can experiment with. And I am not really keen on the Vita chamber mechanic.

But I still love it cos atmos and exploration are my thang.

I finished this the other day and I loved pretty much all of it.

Towards the end, the combat did get a bit repetitive but other then that top stuff.

Highlight of the year so far.
