Two new PS3's have just arrived at work for us to play on during lunch.

They used to have a PS2 that people would occasionally have a game of footie on.

At least this will give me an acid test of PS3 or Xbox360 to choose from.

Providing I'm not too busy to take a lunchbreak....

Bah! It's an easy choice. 360 if you like playing games. PS3 if you like something that attacts dust like shit attracts flies, and..........and..........errr, err.......mmmmm...not much else. ;)

If it were a purely gaming based choice at present the 360 would be a no brainer.

My dilemna is that I don't have a great deal of spare time to play loads of games so it would be more of an occasional gaming machine.

360 Pro's

Large selection of Games

360 Con's

Only DVD drive - limited storage for games
Doesn't support Tru HD sound
Reliablilty
Looks awful, power suppy like brick

PS3 Pro's

Bluray drive, therefore becomes my new hi-def movie player (unless HD-DVD format wins)
Reliablility? (I still have a launch day PS2 going strong)
Ease of upgrading internal drive
Looks

PS3 Con's

Not many decent titles yet. Lots in the pipeline for later this year/next year

Jury is still out for me..

Agreed, however the games for the PS3 which are out are pretty good. 360 ones are up and down, and far too many shooters for my liking.

Make sure you get Super Stardust and Warhawk, both have co-op so should be good for work(mates) and the quick gaming fix over lunch.

Realistically I will only be buying one of these consoles. Hence I still have the trusty PS2 and never got an XBox.

The kids have a Wii pencilled in for xmas though...

Yeah yeah... The 'kids' have a Wii pencilled in for Christmas. :D

PS3 vs 360 comes down to how much you want blu-ray against how much you like playing games, and an awesome integrated online service  (where's that fanboy smilie?).

Ok, it should be down to what games you want to play. So Tel, what tweaks your gaming nipples right now?

The "kids" comment is genuine.

Their Grandad offered to get them a Wii or a PS3 for xmas (no mention of a 360 ;) )

they opted for a Wii which I think is the right choice for them. Already having a PS2 and DustCube

My gaming nipples have been untweaked for a unhealthily long time. However the style of games that I have enjoyed in the past...

Outrun style racers - eg Burnout et al.
Not a GT nut - quick pick up and play
Half Life 1 & 2 - lapped em up
Unreal Tournament for fragging mates
Metal Gear Series (yes with the long videos)
GTA and other sandbox games
Decent platformers - Jak & Daxter etc.
ICO

Games I despise:-
RPG's
Sim's
Fighters
MMORPG's
RTS

I'd recommend the 360 over the PS3 every day of the week.

Yeah, the PS3 looks smart and is great for showing off pictures and Blu-Rays, but there's fuck all out there for it that's either any good and/or exclusive.

Plus, I've now heard more than one inside rumour that it's not as powerful as was hinted at, and it's also a bitch to get the most out of, even for talented devs.

The 360 just has SUCH a cool back-catalogue of games AND a shitload to come.

Right I will give you my take, cos for some strange reason I have actually been buying games for the PS3 and enjoying them.

Some of these comments are pretty laughable to be honest and its nowhere near as cut and dried as made out. The 360 has loads of titles cos its been out nearly two years. There is no other reason. I didn't hear these arguments when the original Xbox came out and the PS2 had a million games already. And how many of these loads of games have you actually bought?

If you have had a 360 for this time you will have been having a ball but to somone like Tel who is buying his first next gen console its pretty meaningless and he is starting from a blank slate. If he wants to revisit loads of old 360 titles fair enough but many MANY of them are mediocre and dissapointing and no big deal to miss out on. I could have never have bought my 360 and I would probably have missed only Crackdown and Bioshock BADLY. But thats my opinion, cos lots of people wank off over Killswitches of War.

The 360 has only Halo 3, Mass Effect, Bioshock that are big exclusives and a probably a good excuse to get a 360 and like a lot of software on the machine they are all shootery type games. But to be honest, in 2008 there is very little that is particularly exciting that is exclusive on the machine imo and the PS3 definitely has the edge with much more varied ideas as they showed at E3.

If Tel wants to play a decent platformer there will be the new Ratchet and Clank in November on the PS3. If he wants play MGS4 he has to get a PS3. If he wants to play a new adventure Tomb Raider type game he can play Drakes Fortune. He can play Killzone 3 next year. He cany look forward to God of War III and team Icos new game. Even some of the new eyetoy games like Eye of Judgement look pretty wicked and fun.

Virtually ANY anticipated title can now be found on both machines like GTA, Assassins Creed, Devil May Cry. And most of the 360's decent stuff of recent times like Rainbow 6 Vegas, Ghost Recon AW 2, Oblivion, Colin McCrae etc is on the PS3 for Tel to pick up straight away.

Add to this you can actually play the amazing Warhawk and all your other titles online free of charge and its a bloody great place to play games.

Imo, the time to buy a 360 was a year ago. If you have the money you must buy both but if you are getting one from THIS point I would favour the PS3, its deffo the future.

Fanny-boi!!!

Good points, well made. But I still think there's more VFM to be had with a 360 as some of those older, decent games are cheap now as well, coupled with the unit itself being cheaper. OK, so no wi-fi, but my PS3's internet connection is s-l-o-w as fuck anyway compared to the glory of Live.

Oh...and the PS3 controller sucks compared to the 360 one!

:P

Takes one to know one. :P

Value for money is relative.
If you want to play games and only games then you can pick up a 360 way cheaper. The PS3 offers you more for obviously more price. Whether you want or need it all is your decision. But if you are going to argue VFM then just buy a Wii or even a PS2 which has the best and biggest catalogue of games around. Of course it isnt as simple as that....

I wish to god I could have the 360 controller for Warhawk. On the other hand I am glad I dont have it for Ninja Gaiden Sigma. And the archaic use batteries every fortnight method for the 360 pad is shite and yet another backwards step on the machine.

Yep, I think 4thie understands where I am coming from.

Forgot about the lack of Rumble on the the PS3 controllers. :(

As for actually purchasing one, I still have plenty of drawing to do to bring up the grand total. I may crumble and get a 360 after I reach the £300 mark. But for now the PS3 is looking like the likely contender. I am in it for the long game at the moment.

If it was not for Warhawk and Blu ray my PS3 would have more dust on it than the Wii

Ok its not been out as long as the 360 - but I swear there was a bigger choice for the 360 after 6 months than what the PS3 has now - maybe not though

The PS3 could definatley be the console of the future but its hard to argue that the console of now is the 360

With the exception of Warhawk the PS3 has little to offer over the 360

The extra age of the 360 also means that many of the better games can be picked up now for well under £20 (mate of mine got Oblivion, Gears of War and Dead Rising for £32 from local Gamestation)

Taking out multi platform titles and Warhawk it would seem the next BIG exclusive title (that has a chance of being good) is going to be R&C at end of October followed by Drakes Fortune at end of November (I really dont think that MGS or Killzone will be here any side of march next year)

The 360 has only a slightly better exclusive line up of

PGR4
Halo 3
and Mass Effect

If undecided and not bothered about a 360 then wait til after xmas for the PS3 - bound to be better value then and less of a wait for the games

Mind brand new PS3 for little over £260 is not a bad price at all

Nah the PS3 has loads of choice for its first six months, its just that a lot of it is third party so it also appears on the 360. When the 360 came out it did not have the PS3 to compete with so it seemed everything was exclusive. If as a muti format owner you now want to keep buying 360 versions thats your choice, cos you want all the achievements I have heard.

The consideration for me is different, I want to play the online elements free for example and I like the way some of the ports have more content and maps as standard on the PS3.

And Heavenly Sword, Resistance, Motorstorm, Virtua Fighter 5 (at the moment) Ninja Gaiden Sigma and two of the best downloadable games ever in Stardust and Warhawk is a decent exclusive list in that short space of time. Way better than the PS2 ever had in that timeframe.

There is plenty for a brand new PS3 owner who is new to the next gen to dive into already.

Getting a 360 as advised here a few months back was the best decision I've made in a loooonnngggg time. It's absolutely a world away from PS2 and ALL of the recommended games have been really enjoyable.

Thanks again chaps ;)

Going forward Tel, you seem to have similar tastes (and available time) as me, the games lineup for 360 over the next few months seems a lot more appealing than those for PS3, imo.
