I think it was a couple of issues back in Edge, where they ran a piece of the reliablility problems of the 360. They spoke to a company who specialised in repairs and the guy representing them said that in fairness he had seen almost as many faulty PS3's but that somehow they had ducked under the radar so far.

I've not heard anything about reliability problems with the PS3 but, judging by the long threads on other forums, there have been lots of returns due to the fan noise issue, and Sony were doing swapouts by courier at one point.

The whole blu-ray vs hd-dvd is rather intriguing. I thought that the PS3 has help blu-ray steal an unassailable lead, but then lots of other little things keep making me wonder...

Wow, a quite interesting debate continues while I have been indulging in ass to mouth in a distant locale.....

So, feeling refreshed and rather sensible now all the badness has been sucked out of me I shall provide my genuine sensible thoughts to try and help Tel out a bit more-

Either of the 360 or PS3 will do Tel just fine as a gaming machine. There are a shite load of games for the 360 out already and there will be a shite load of games for the PS3 in the future. We are not talking the 3DO here, there are loads of games in development backed by an enormous company.
I can understand the lack of current games comments for the PS3 to a DEGREE. What surprises me in a place full of gamers is the doom and gloom and lack of interest in its many and varied coming titles. It couldn't be more opposite for me and this time next year these sort of comments will be moot and forgotten imo.

Both pads have their pros and cons, although the 360 pad is perfect for the genres of games that mostly proliferate its library. I believe the PS3 is a nicer piece of hardware with more going on but then it SHOULD be for the price and you can get your 360 cheaper and buy games with the change.

I would not bother with an Elite personally. If you are going to stretch that far get the genuine all round behemoth in a PS3. The ordinary 360 will do just fine as a machine for games only and gives you a decent cash head start.

As far as the close to 2007 (and maybe slightly over) goes there are these ANTICIPATED exclusive (or exclusive for a good few months) games to consider-

Big Franchises for the 360-

Bioshock (although released already its a must have)
Halo 3
Mass Effect
PGR4

The PS3 has-

Drakes Fortune
Ratchet and Clank
Haze
Unreal III (for a while at least)

I would also chuck in Warhawk for any prospective PS3 owner cos its wunderbar addiction that will last months (when you can get on it)

Either of these selections would tempt me greatly on my first console purchase. The PS3 selection is more varied in genre with a platformer, adventurer and two different style shooters. But on probable DELIVERED quality the 360 games may have a wee edge as Haze and Drakes are an unknown quantity and brand new efforts. Plus Halo 3 is a big draw for many.

In 2008 and beyond I **personally** tend to favour the potential and variety of PS3's exclusive content. But there may well be a long wait for many of these-

Little Big Planet
MGS4
Final Fantasy XIII
White Knight Story
GT5
KIllzone 2
The Getaway (I long to see how this will turn out in next gen form)
Team Ico's next project (on the basis of their previous two games)
La Noire (maybe 2009)
God of War III (maybe)
Wardevil Enigma
Infamous (which I believe is going to be Sony's Crackdown)
Tekken 6
The Agency (online spying shenanigans)

People tend to forget that Sony themselves are a huge and very capable software house these days. But of course some of this is tempered by the fact that Tel doesn't care for RPG's and Gran Turismo.

The 360 has exclusive stuff like-

Alan Wake
Ninja Gaiden 2 (probably exclusive)
Fable 2 (I actually liked the first one a lot)
Huxley

And then I am struggling a little bit to think of big future exclusive stuff that I am excited about. (if anyone can help Tel here please add stuff cos I am not being deliberately obstructive and a lot of my recent research has been PS3 based due to my newer purchase)

In between all this there is a whole slew of stuff that will appear on both consoles so its safe to say whatever Tel buys he will have more than enough to go at. The 360 has an advantage of being familiar and easy to develop for, so many of the 3rd party titles at the moment come out a bit earlier and sometimes smoother. On the other hand as we saw with the PS2 devs eventually suss out the architecture and the machine keeps on giving and improving even late into its lifespan. Plus as the PS3 user base grows more 3rd party devs may be tempted to go PS3 lead platform and make use of the extra hardware for more content or features.

And its this sort of ying yang reasoning which led me to clean out the 4thie exchequer to purchase both. Good luck!

Yebbut the PS3, whilst imo not looking "smart" as some people seem to think, but more like a posh sandwich toaster/waffle iron with the dust-attracting capabilities of a Russian-built industrial ioniser, does boast a rotating badge, so it wins hands down, regardless of reliability issues and even less important things like neighbour envy, pricepoint, noise, joypad preference, release schedules, games portfolios 'n' shit.

....And you can get porn on it (so I'm told). :ph43r:

...But then there's Halo 3 and PGR4...

DEALBREAKER!

If only the PS3 streaming media abilities were as up to scratch as my PC then I could put to use all my lovely porn site passwords from the comfort of my gloriously stained bed......

It's good that you can get a proper, high brow discussion on Gamecell/Final-Level. Must must never, EVER change.

I think 4thie's one-handed posts usually mean that he's wiping a tear from his Jap's eye too.

What's all this kafuffle about then. Maybe I'm simple like the village idiot, but I don't see much point in spending too much time weighing up the pro's and con's of which console to go for, when there are only 3 of the damned things.

Truth be known, if we had the time and money we'd get all of them. Life sadly dictates that other halves, work, mortgages, kids etc mean we can maybe go for one, two if we're very lucky ... and okay, three for the playboy international men of mystery. So, fancy whirly add-ons and internet access and blue ray nonsense aside (it's all guff to me as consoles are for games period), surely it's down to the games portfolio and games in dev that are of interest - and decision making should be based on that? But that's just my humble and straightforward opinion, based on having no interest in the peripheral/HD DVD/internet/Blue Ray add ons.
